Libris Mortis has a feat called "Tomb-Tainted Soul." It states that anyone with the feat is healed by positive energy and harmed by negative energy as if you were Undead. It also states that it doesn't give any other negative or benefit of being Undead. By the wording of the feat, would this make you immune to Negative Energy effects like Enervation and Level Drain? And what about the Dread Necromancer who can deal 1 point of Negative Energy with a touch as a standard action? :smallconfused:

Best of luck

-EddieHe gets infinite healing. That feat is considered necessary for any DN who doesn't plan to be undead through Necropolitan. Infinite healing at level one for the cost of a feat is very nice.

You're very right about Dread Necromancer, that's one of the more famous methods to get infinite (but slow) healing. The feat says nothing about Enervation and Level Drain though, so those would act normally.

These are the same. Evervation/Level drain are other benefits of being undead.

A popular feat taken by DN.

Enervation and Level Drain are not Negative Energy Damage, thus the Tomb Tainted Soul feat does not apply to them. Only negative energy damage, such as that obtained from the Dread Necromancer's Charnel Touch or an Inflict x Wounds spell, heal the person with Tomb-Tainted Soul.

It does protect you from enervation. You gain 5hp instead of a negative level.

It seems like this feat does not have enough description. Enervation states that it is a Ray of Negative Energy, which you are healed by. However, you do not gain the Undead benefit of Level Drain Immunity. The Wight description does not say Negative Energy anywhere, so that would still hit you because you are not Immune to Level Drain. Is this simply a case of Rules as Written not being the same as Rules as Intended? That is pretty neat about the Dread Necromancer though. :smallamused:

As always, best of luck.

No, actually, you don't.

You only heal from negative energy DAMAGE, not all negative energy effects. Thus the DN's touch, or an Inflict spell would heal you, but Enervation would still inflict 1d4+1 negative levels.

If you consider Enervation to do damage, then I pity you next time you find a Rogue with UMD and a Wand of Enervation doing 1d4+1+6d6 Negative Levels...

You are also NOT immune to level drain, such as that from a Vamp or Wight

The rogue could very well make a sneak attack with enervation. Of course, he wouldnt deal negative levels with his sneak attack, any more than he would deal fire damage if he made a sneak attack with scorching ray.

...of course, the sneak attack damage from Scorching Ray is fire damage, as explicitly stated in Complete Arcane. Sneak attack damage from Enervation is negative energy damage.

Enervation does deal 5 hp/level (from level loss). So you heal 5, but lose 5, meaning you gain nothing but negative level penalties.

Oi...

Rogues sneak attack does the same type of damage the base attack does. For an Enervation, it doesn't dish out negative levels, because that isn't DAMAGE, which is why you don't HEAL from it. A rogue sneak attacking with a scorching ray WOULD do fire damage with the additional sneak attack damage.

The Tomb-Tainted Soul feat does not say anything about it having to be negative energy damage. It says
You are healed by negative energy and harmed by positive energy as if you were an undead creature. This feat gives no other penalties or benefits of the undead type.

On the other hand, Enervation (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/enervation.htm) doesn't heal undead creatures, either:
An undead creature struck by the ray gains 1d4×5 temporary hit points for 1 hour. If Enervation healed undead creatures, then you would heal from it just like an undead would instead of the usual effect. But it doesn't heal undead, it gives them temp HP, so Tomb-Tainted Soul doesn't apply.

To tidy up about sneak attack and enervation, Complete Arcane says that enervation's sneak attack damage is negative energy. Therefore, if the rogue sneak attacked with envervation, a person with tomb-tainted soul would get the negative levels and be healed the amount of damage. Just thought it needed to be said, for completeness.

I remember seeing a guide or something somewhere that said that something to the effect that there are Dread Necromancers with the Tomb-tainted Soul feat, undead Dread Necromancers, and Dread Necromancers who suck. The reason given was that your negative energy burst technically effects you, too. Convenient if you're healed by negative energy, pretty bad if you're harmed by it.

Looking at the wording of the ability... I buy the argument that you're within 5 feet of yourself, and also that we can assume the burst effects all living creatures and undead in the area although it doesn't specifically say that, but it really ought to clarify one way or another.

Well, a DN who doesn't use their negative energy burst can still do quite well. But Tomb-Tainted Soul is just so nice since it also allows you to use your negative energy burst you heal yourself a lot in combat while harming those surrounding you. But it isn't like just not using that class feature will matter that much as long as you aren't trying to get into close range combat.

In any event, even if you don't strictly need it, unlimited healing for a single feat is a pretty good bargain.
