If the rule were reversed, would much change?

Yes, that one PrC (Rainbow Servant? Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil?) would become decent down from incredibly awesome.

Yes, all your material components would just be the letter "M" and those jerks from Sesame Street would become even richer.

A couple of editing issues would be reversed. There'd be a couple of things where you've got something that's not defined anywhere. But it's a rule for covering minor discrepancies - you wouldn't run across anything particularly major.

LOLC2k wins.

A Rogue 1/ Monk 19 with Ascetic Rogue would get 10d6 Sneak Attack, though a Swordsage would still be better.

Rainbow Servant is the most-mentioned case where this matters, but the same issue shows up in several other Complete Divine classes, too. Even with text trumping table, though, Rainbow Servant is still mostly only worthwhile for beguilers/warmages, and with table trumping text, it's a small step down even for them (and a big step down for everyone else).

Hi

IIRC this one is FAQ'd as the one example where Text doesn't trump Tables.

Hi

Oh, and yes, I have created a Beguiler 6/Rainbow Servant 8 for the Living Planar campaign.............

(Clerics are nerfed in that campaign, so less problem for 'Arcane Healers'.........).

Eh, people have expressed the sentiment that those who think FAQ is RAW should be summarily hanged for treason, citing the many times FAQ contradicts itself as evidence.

Does the rainbow servant (CD 54) and sacred fist (CD 59) gain spellcasting levels for every level of the class or just levels shown on their table?
In the Sage’s opinion, these classes gain spellcasting as their tables indicate. Normally, if there is a difference between what a table says and what the ability indicates in its written explanation, we suggest you use the written rules. This exception, however, maintains a good game balance for these classes within the larger game.
This is more like a case of text > table > poor editing. It's just a lazy copy/paste job on the class feature description that's not repeated in any of the nonenglish printings.

I'm running a gestalt game, one guy is playing a Crusader// Warmage/Phoenix Servant, using the table's progression but taking Warmage on the Crusader side where it skips a level of spellcasting.

Is the text trumps table officially written down anywhere?

As per the errata (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20040125a) for any of the core books, included in the primary source rules:

Errata Rule: Primary Sources
When you find a disagreement between two D&D rules
sources, unless an official errata file says otherwise, the
primary source is correct. One example of a
primary/secondary source is text taking precedence over a
table entry. An individual spell description takes precedence
when the short description in the beginning of the spells
chapter disagrees.
Another example of primary vs. secondary sources involves
book and topic precedence. The Player’s Handbook, for
example, gives all the rules for playing the game, for PC
races, and the base class descriptions. If you find something
on one of those topics from the Dungeon Master’s Guide or
the Monster Manual that disagrees with the Player’s
Handbook, you should assume the Player’s Handbook is the
primary source. The Dungeon Master’s Guide is the primary
source for topics such as magic item descriptions, special
material construction rules, and so on. The Monster Manual
is the primary source for monster descriptions, templates, and
supernatural, extraordinary, and spell-like abilities.

Not true, most recent printing, (Portuguese I believe) had text 10/10, and table 10/10.

On the actual subject. You should keep in mind that would apply to feats too.

And how many times have you thought you had a cool feat that sucks when you read the description because it has a stipulation that wasn't in the table.

Catfolk Pounce is the worst, not because it's actually that bad but because apparently nobody ever reads it, and I've lurked this forum and seen lots of people claim it actually gives pounce.
