This is probably a massive long shot, but if someone knows a bit about geodesy, I'm looking for the standard deviation of the EGM96 geoid, preferably with relation to Australia.

Wikipedia answers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geodesy) your questions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EGM96)

I'm sorry DD but I don't think Wikipedia answered this question...

I would be very surprised if anyone here knows this but if Australia has a Land Surveying Office you could drop an E-Mail there. Or at the University.

Heh, it's not really much of an interest to the various Survey departments since they all use our own version which fits Oz much more closely, this is just for an annoying section of an assignment.

And no, Wiki does not answer my question.

I found this (PDF) (http://earth.esa.int/goce04/goce_proceedings/20_benjamin.pdf) paper at the esa page, but I'm not sure if it is what you need. There are some tables at the second page who could be helpfull.

Otherwise if you have access to a university library look there, they should have some usefull information.

Contact Prof Will Featherstone at Curtin University in Perth as he was one of the developers of AUSGeoid98 (for which they used the data for EGM96) and would be the best person in Australia to tell you.
The department he works in is on 08 9266 7565.

BTW there is an EGM2008 available at:
