View Full Version : Making a Settlers of Catan Set...

So I'm making a custom Settlers of Catan set. It is intended to be the original game, plus the Cities and Knights expansion. I've cut out hexagons made of 3/4" pine and are sanding them to shape. I intend on pasting the game board hexes directly to the wood to make a solid board that won't shift or have the pieces moved upward (this is one of the reasons for making the custom board, aside from it being fun). I have also made a large wooden box with metal handles to hold everything. Next step is to cut out the oddly-shaped ocean sqaures in the newer version of the game (alternatively, I could cut out more hexes and just make the water hexes that way). Afteward, I need to cut out a circle of pine to make a new board for the barbarian ship. Finally, I'd like to also add a bit of detail onto the box, I was thinking of maybe somehow getting the word "CATAN" onto the lid, but I'm not sure how to do this. I have access to a skill saw, a jigsaw, a sawzall, clamps, a power drill (with drill bits, hole-cutters, etc) and plenty of sandpaper. I do NOT have a table saw or a power sander of any kind (unfortunate since the blade I used on the jigsaw was a bit bent so all the hexes need sanding).

The reason for my posting is to gather opinions on the following:

1) How should I go about doing the ocean squares?
2) How should I get "CATAN" onto the box lid?
3) Where can I find matching blue, orange, red, and white baggies to hold the game pieces? I was thinking of dice bags, but they seem to be difficult to find. Another bag for the non-player-specific game pieces will also be needed, but it doesn't need to match.

EDIT: 2 and 3 have been addressed, plus images on the work in progress.

1- new ocean pieces? aren't they all hes?

2- you don't have a rotary tool or router huh?
How about wood burning tools?
You could cut the letters out and glue and brad them on to the top....

3- with the expansion don't you also need green and brown pieces? or was that not in K&C?

You could make the old fashioned sewing, or you could make little boxes and paint them for each player set of pieces.

The new version of the game has wonky ocean pieces that are oddly shaped. They fit around the board, but they aren't hexes.

I decided to take the easy route with regard to the lettering and storage containers. I lack the tools/skill to do much more and these seem practical and visually appealing.

That is too awesome for words.

If you owned the rights to it I would buy a set.

If I were you I would use a wood burning tool.

@shadzar: thats the 5-6 player expansion sets. There is one for the original, for cities and knights, and for seafarers. Expands the game to allow 5 or 6 players

@Egiam: Thanks. :) I do not have a wood burning tool nor do I know how to use one. Can you suggest a guide?

The letterings were bought from a craft store

Update: two new images with the board pieces as they are so far. The pieces still require some work before they will fit together nicely. Also featured is a disc I created to replace the barbarian ship board.
