View Full Version : The Asylum (Most Insane Characters Thread)

Welcome... To the Asylum.

This is a thought experiment along the same lines as the Top 10 Villains and Top 10 Villainous Organisations threads, but very different from both of these. Imagine that, at the centre of the multiverse, where all mythologies and stories interconnect, there is a huge, forbidding Asylum, run by an ancient and inscrutable Warden. This Warden is dedicated to tracking down insane fictional characters and keeping them in the Asylum for the rest of time.

Note: This is not a Villains thread, though it works the same way. This is an insane characters thread. It doesn't matter if the character is minor or major, hero or anti-hero, villain or henchman, if they're at least arguably insane, they get chucked in here.

The Asylum has several tiers. The highest tier is where the most high-profile insane characters are kept. The lowest tier is where the least prominent are kept.

This thread works differently from the Villains threads. Everyone gets to nominate as many insane characters as they want, provided they are actually insane (give reasons to back this up, or I'll be forced to resort to checking Wikipedia :smalltongue: - Also, give the fictional media from which the character is derived). The nominations will close when I feel we have enough, and then voting will begin. Everyone will have 10 votes each. The characters with the most votes will be put in the highest tier of the Asylum, and the characters with the least will stay incarcerated at the bottom. If this thing takes off, I might write fanfiction based on it, because I am weird like that. I have taken the liberty of nominating a few myself to get the ball rolling.

The Nominations:

Oh, I had thought this was to post insane character's we've played....though the sub forum should have told me I was wrong.

Joker is high on that list for sure. The main villan from Dead Man Wonderland...forget his name...ranks up there as well.

Right...

Barking Wilder from Planescape Torment, and the Planescape Adventures.

Delirium from Sandman.

GLADOS. Here, she's actually fitting.

Tsunenaga Tamaki? Is that the guy you mean?

EDIT: I added Minsc from Baldur's Gate to the list, as an example of an unarguably good character being in the Asylum.

Sweeney Todd. And Toby, by the end. Actually, pretty much everybody from that musical, except for Anthony and Johanna.

Also, Pip from Moby-****.

Deadpool - He actually thinks he's a character in a comic book.

Alternately, Everyone else in the Marvel Universe - They DON'T think they are characters in comic books.

Riddler - "You don't understand. .. I really didn't want to leave you any clues. I really planned never to go back to Arkham Asylum. But I left you a clue anyway. So I... I have to go back there. Because I might need help. I... I might actually be crazy."

Ford Prefect - At least, he went mad for a while. Then he got bored with it.

Davros - "Yes, I would do it."

Tracy Jordon from 30 Rock - And proud of it. He wanted to sue a tabloid for calling him normal.

Doctor Destiny - At least the Sandman version is terrifyingly insane. The JLA version is considerably less so.

Hans Beckert from M - Very sympathetic but also completely twisted.

The Bursar - "Why, certainly, I'll have your whelk! How do we do it? Volume!"

Braids- MTG, gals pretty nuts.

Ramsay Bolton- ASOIAF. A villain so twisted he raped a girl, killed her, then told his mentally broken servant to rape her again. I think the guys one of the few as nuts as Mr J.

Zsasz, Two-Face, you know the Batman lineup.

The Reavers- Firefly and Serenity. You'd need a rather huge Asylum though.

Adam Susan- V for Vendetta (comic) yeah he's pitiable, but this very human fascist fell in love with a computer, before he completely broke down.

Mr. Kurtz- Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now/ The horror, the horror and all that.

Well the Joker is obvious and nobody can be as insane as him. That being said:

Soulcatcher from the Black company: An avatar of chaos, she get bonus point for having like a thousand personnalities and surviving her own decapitation.

Franky from One Piece: most people would just call him crazy since, for some reason, most people associate crazy with good character and insane with evil character. But if we go back to true definition of insane, Franky is probably one of the only character who can almost match the Joker. A self made Cyborg (which means he was conscious when he butchered his own body to add armor-plate and weapons) his whole fighting style and all his actions scream insanity. He was based on Jim Carrey after all.

All the characters from No more heroes: Everyone is insane in that game.

Weezer
2009-05-20, 09:19 PM
Lord Kevin Landwaster (Chronicles of Thomas Covenant): Was driven insane by despair so badly that he rained destruction on all he knew and loved

Oh, just insane you say? Well- HEY! Why is there a hamster with my name?! Damn you D&D! DAMN YOU!! (I thought you were talking about me for three seconds just because the name is so rare to see on a character)

Back on topic: Everyone in this movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asylum_(1972_film)).

Mad Hatter (Really? No one's suggested him yet?)

Alex "DeLarge" (A Clockwork Orange - He is a Clockwork Orange, or at least was.)

Luther (The Warriors - "No reason")

The Crimson King (Dark Tower series)

Well the Joker is obvious and nobody can be as insane as him.Ah, I love how silly this line is. :smalltongue:

I wouldn't nominate Zaraki. He doesn't seem to have much of a stand for insanity (You are looking for insane people, right? Not just people who seem insane, but are just exaggerated?). Mayuri on the other hand would fit much better.

And I still can't believe the Mad Hatter wasn't mentioned right off the bat. For shame!

Brewdude

Remy from Black Lagoon. Really likes getting INTO gunfights, treats them like an extreme sporting event and goes into a sort of blood lust trance while in the middle of one.

The Twins from Black Lagoon. Pre-teen genius homicidal escapees from a child porn operation. They trade off which one dresses like a boy and which dresses like a girl.

"Sanity? What would I do with something as useless as that?"

Braids- MTG, gals pretty nuts.

Care to elaborate? I can't find any evidence of this person. By "MTG" are you referring to Magic: The Gathering?

FYI: Nominations saying "Everyone from x" will not be counted as I'd prefer to have names and I'm not going to track down every character from said universe. Either list them all yourself, or give the most prominent examples. However, naming specific groups within said universe which are all insane is fine (e.g. Firefly's Reavers).

I thought the defining characteristic of dementia was not realizing your worldview was demented and/or being incapable of changing your behavior after realizing it. Anyone who brags upon their insanity ought to be voided from the list. Goodbye, the namesake.

The insane characters in the books of my library are either too obscure to nominate or thinly fictionalized real people.

Berry the Chopper (Fullmetal Alchemist) He's a very minor character that ran a butcher shop, dressed up as a chick to make deliveries, and hacked people up. He was caught, killed, turned into an animated suit of armor and became a bloodthirsty psuedo golem.

Good to see the Joker on the list. He's the first guy that came to mind, but then again, wouldn't all Batman villains fit this list. I think too most of the Gung Ho Guns from Trigun should fit the list as well.

I'm not sure if he counts, but what about The Comedian/Edward Blake. He's a psychopath and rapist.

I'm not sure that's true. I've definitely read about real-life cases of people who were analysed as being 'insane' and who acknowledged that they were, but went on with acting the same as before anyway. I think that 'insanity' is too vague a term to have set rules like that.

And even if you're right, better to ignore that, because otherwise we'd have to get rid of the Joker, the Mad Hatter (c'mon, he calls himself 'the Mad Hatter'), and others who definitely belong. Let's not ruin our fun by trying to apply real-world rules to fictional people.

EDIT: Also, Berserk Monk, I'd say The Comedian is amoral, evil, and all-around nasty, but not insane.

You're right. People affected with dementia most of the time cant realize it. But dementia is not even a form of insanity, its an actual disease thats (mostly) because of old age (the Alzheimer's disease is a form a dementia.) But for insanity? Most people realize they are insane. Weither they want to become sane or not is another matter though.

Lets check at some real form of insanity shall we? Psychopathy? Kenpachi is most definitly a psychopath. The incapacity to feel any form of fear? Yeah he got that too. I'm not a specialist and I can still easely see two severe form of insanity with Kenpachi and I'm sure there is more.

Johnny Truant (House of Leaves) - Geez, where to start on this guy? Johnny Truant is an unreliable narrator on enough drugs to start a hospital being driven slowly insane by the notes of a man named Zampano - except Johnny might not even exist. "He" might be a hallucination of his mother, or of Zampano, or Zampano might be his own hallucination, or his mother could be his hallucination, or both of them could be Zampano's! However it breaks down, Johnny has completely and utterly lost it by the end of House of Leaves, breaking down as completely and utterly as the possibly-fictional Navidson family.

Hmmm... I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one, since I've never read the original book, only the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen version.

Kenpatchi is hard to call. He's an interesting character.

Since watchmen came up...

I have no idea what the Black Freighter guy is called. Was he even given a name? I'll just call him the 'Marooned Mariner.' But yeah, he was definitely insane enough for the Asylum.

Ozymandias... I'm not sure. :smallconfused: I can see why you'd say that, but to me what he does implies a sort of terrifyingly logical sanity.

I don't know. If anyone else agrees with you on this one, I'll put him up. Same goes for the Comedian.

Alucard, from Hellsing. He is the most sociopathic character I can think of in anything. He just really, really, really likes killing people in horrible ways, especially while mocking them for being unable to defeat him.

Alexander Anderson, from Hellsing. He's kind of like Alucard's equal and opposite number. He's a fanatical Catholic priest who's very kind to members of his faith, but will kill anyone else who gets in his way with no regret. He once breaks up a fight between two Catholic schoolchildren, telling them "You should only fight monsters and heretics." Goes into combat grinning and hurling bayonets at his enemies while chanting Bible verses and yelling "AAAAAAMEEEEEEN!" at the top of his lungs.

You know the Roman Emperor Nero was quite mad too.

Of course, but did Emperor Nero

destroy a planet (Vulcan, no less) by creating a black hole in its center, all while driving around in a humongous Borg-enhanced mining awesome ship that looks like something out of H.P. Lovecraft?

No? I didn't think so. There is insanity, and then there is insanity.

Also, since we have infinite nominations, I'll go ahead and nominate, from the Star Trek Original Series episode Dagger of the Mind (which I just watched),

Dr. Tristan Adams. For information's sake, he was in charge of a penal colony, and his favored method of dealing with inmates consisted of turning them into mindless slaves using a brainwashing machine.

There's also the fact Emperor Nero died (I forget the years of his rein, but let's just say) about 2,000 years before space travel or the atomic bomb - a weapon that one single missle couldn't even come close to wiping out life on a planet. So unless a at some point int ancient history, Roman phalanx suddenly all went super saiyan, Nero never had the means to do this. That doesn't mean he wasn't that crazy.

Ehh, the Emperor was more insane if you ask me. The Romulan was just overactive sense of revenge and more technology. The Emperor set his own city on fire while playing his lyre so he could make his own spa. (Sure it's only 1 theory on how it started, but doesn't change that he fiddled while his city burned and built a spa on the ruins)

That and the Romulan was a bit of an idiot. If he only wanted destruction, and could make black holes, why not just move to Vulcan make a black hole and leave. You don't need to be in the center of a planet for the black hole to kill everything

Mainly for the effect, probably. Or maybe it would have sucked him in, too? I'm no expert on singularities, so I can't tell. And I don't care much, either (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfCool).

And from now on, all my nominations will be posted below (keep watching this post! You are watching this post, right?):

Warden Treelos (http://www.wowwiki.com/Warden_Treelos) (Warcraft) - A druid driven quite insane by watching his friends die. And when I say quite, I mean utterly.
Deathwing (Warcraft) - Driven insane by the whispers of the Old Gods, the Black Dragon Aspect became one of Azeroth's most feared villains.
Malygos (Warcraft) - Oh, right, I forgot, Malygos stopped being insane. And then he went on to try to kill each and every magic-user on Azeroth. Apparently, that's being sane...
Abdul Alhazred (Lovecraft Mythos) - He's not called the Mad Arab for nothing. Come on, this guy wrote the Necronomicon.
Callisto (Xena: Warrior Princess) - Xena's wicked doppelganger. Now, I've only watched Callisto and Callisto's Return, but I don't find it likely that she'd turn sane later on (but if she does, tell me).
Dukat (Star Trek) - The morally questionable cardassian officer and continuous antagonist to the crew of Deep Space 9. At least by the end of Season 6 he seemed quite insane.
Atyminius (http://warriorprincess.wikia.com/wiki/Mortal_Beloved) (Xena: Warrior Princess) - (Un)dead villain who stole Hades's invisibility helmet and took over the underworld for an episode.
"Coach" Ernie Pantusso (Cheers) - Has taken a few too many hits in the head during his career.
Kodos the Executioner (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Kodos) (Star Trek) - Guy who executed 4,000 colonists based on some weird view on eugenics and then got a green alien named after him.
Lenore Karidian (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Lenore_Karidian) (Star Trek) - From the same episode as the above guy, and even more insane.
Kryll (http://www.wowwiki.com/Kryll) (Warcraft) - "Boom. Now boom? I wish for a boom. Boom go! This coin must be broken, I wonder if it'll explode."
Sicco Thermaplugg (http://www.wowwiki.com/Thermaplugg) (Warcraft) - The quite insane leader of the leper gnomes, Thermaplugg detonated an atomic bomb sans explosion in order to fend off an invasion he probably orchestrated himself. This traitorous tinker now calls himself King of Gnomeregan.
Haggle (http://www.wowwiki.com/Haggle) (Warcraft) - This leper gnome isn't as hostile as most of his kin, although he is equally insane. "I had it all! I had it all then I lost it. Lost... All gone... Like... My mind. My mind is like... Cheese. I like cheese."
Jennings (http://www.wowwiki.com/Jennings) (Warcraft) - OK, so it's another leper gnome. But hey, infinite nominations, remember? This one is an assistant to a Forsaken Grand Apothecary, and jumps around yelling for lunch.
The Headless Horseman (http://www.wowwiki.com/Headless_Horseman) (Warcraft) - Every year around Hallow's End, this undead guy flies around the world on his horse, torching buildings and reciting bad poetry.
Maiev Shadowsong (Warcraft) - The leader of the Watchers and the Warden of Illidan Stormrage, whose escape led to her "sinking into vengeful madness" as she pursued him. Speaking of which,
Illidan Stormrage (Warcraft) - Insanity is not too uncommon in this universe. While he (probably) has good intentions at first, he turned quite insane at the end as well.
Miko Miyazaki (Order of the Stick) - What, nobody mentioned her yet? I think it'd be fair to call her insane, at least before her redeathmption (I really should stop mixing words).
Daelin Proudmoore (Warcraft) - The grand admiral and sovereign of Kul Tiras, he let his hatred for the orcs drive him into a frenzy that eventually got him slain.
Garithos (Warcraft) - Human grand marshal and one of the biggest racists ever. It was his maddened hatred that made the blood elves abandon the Alliance. Willing to send non-humans to their deaths even if it meant a tactical disadvantage.
Kael'thas Sunstrider (Warcraft) - Once-noble prince of the blood elves, but the destruction of his homeland, along with other things (see above), resulted in yet another casualty to the insanity that's abundant in Azeroth (and Outland). His latest act was attempting to bring an end to the world by summoning a demon lord.
Sargeras (Warcraft) - The Big Bad of the Warcraft universe, the dark titan Sargeras abandoned his saner kin in order to create the Burning Legion from the very demons he had previously helped to stop.
Sintharia/Lady Sinestra (Warcraft) - The former prime consort of Deathwing, Sintharia later renounced the Aspect and started her own operation in the depths of Grim Batol. Insane? Of course. Secretly manipulated by Deathwing? Of course.
Velasca (Xena: Warrior Princess) - Usurper Queen of the Amazons, Velasca gladly sacrificed her brethren in her maddened quest to gather ambrosia and become a goddess. She succeeded, but was buried beneath a lava stream along with Callisto.

I have to know how this thread got to 2 pages without a mention of Albedo from Xenosaga? He ripped his head off with his bare hands, juggled it while babbling about stripping his prisoner in her secrets (in a fairly squickish way, given she's a bio-roid who appears to be about 10-12 years old) before dropping it on the ground and stomping on it at which point he re-grows it.

Also in the second game when:
He finds out that his brothers don't have the same healing power he does so he starts practicing digging graves for when Rubedo and Nigredo die and leave him alone.

Also his babbling when his mind shattered when it contacted the super-dimensional consciousness U-DO and he goes into a fit about not being an anti-existence. I'm pretty sure that's also where he developed his plan to effectively destroy the universe just so he could finally die.

I'll also push forward Gauron and Gates from Full Metal Panic and FMP: The Second Raid. The former is obsessed with the show's protagonist Souske Sagara to the point where it becomes a form of twisted possessive love while the latter, well what Gates does just makes me go 0.o with his battlefield commentary, typical means of discussion, and his... fondness for kittens (*shudder*). Of course the fact that they're drugged to operate a super-science device that turns thoughts into physical force explains some of it (mostly Gates, Gauron is just freaking insane.)

Here's a few more crazy logs for the fire:

Alice (American McGee's Alice)
HOLLY (Red Dwarf)
Jeffry Goines (Twelve Monkeys)
King Tut (Batman)
Mad Gerald (The Black Adder)
Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver)

Really, just about all the Batman villains fit into the category of "insane," hence their going to Arkham Asylum rather than prison. But King Tut was especially wacky.

I went ahead and added Johnny C from Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Quite apart from the whole "killing hundreds of people for no good reason" thing, he also hallucinates that a rabbit nailed to a wall is speaking to him, and fills dolls with liquidised rats and throws them at his walls just for the lulz.

Yeah, I don't know why this hasn't been added yet, but Salad Fingers needs to be added right now. If you've ever seen one of his flash cartoons you'd understand why. Also, Homsar.

I forget the names, but like half the cast in Repo the Genetic Opera. Those who've seen it recently, drop some names.

*Malygos (Warcraft) - Oh, right, I forgot, Malygos stopped being insane. And then he went on to try to kill each and every magic-user on Azeroth. Apparently, that's being sane...

He doesnt want to destroy all magic user. They just wont be able to use magic anymore (and it only apply to arcane magic, not druids or shaman). Hes basically making them normal again. And the reason hes doing this is because mortal abused magic so much that its threatening to destroy the world. That being said, nobody believe him on that last part which is why hes so pissed off.

Honestly, those quests annoyed me because, except for the fact that the Kirin Tor and everyone else wanted to keep using arcane magic, I cant find a single reason why Malygos woudnt be right. I mean hes the freaking aspect of Magic, he should know better then the Kirin Tor archmages.

Green Goblin/Harry Ozborn (Spider Man) I've never read the comics, but the movie speaks enough.

Maybe so, but he sure had no qualms about slaying those who didn't agree with his decision. He even has a "secret police", the Mage Hunters, who are (as far as I can tell) instructed to imprison and/or kill any "unauthorized" casters they encounter, as well as smashing anything magic to pieces. If the Spellweaver had been sane, he'd probably had consulted with his fellow aspects in order to find a course of action instead of just acting on his own.

I think meatwad should be taken off. the only ep where he is insane is Teashirt of the dead and that was cuz he had the power of a god. If you want to put some one from ATHF on the list it would be shake.(He killed a 3 cats 2 in the micowave 1 with a powered screwdriver and was happy about it(not about sparkels his cat tho))

He talks to Boxy Brown like he was a sentient being. He hears voices in his head. Shake is just an ass***** who likes to torment Meatwad. If Shake is added, I demand the Comedian be added (he's far madder than Shake).

What about the cybernetic ghost of the christmas past from the future?

Hard to say. He's a robot and is programmed as such. Do we really want to get into artificial intelligence and the sanity of sentient machines (though, we did add Roberto, but he is CRAZY and was committed)?

As a final note, nearly all Adult Swim characters COULD be on the list.

ATHF is full of crazies. I highly doubt Shake is at the top of the list. Dr. Weird is. Besides there was one episode where Meatwad thought Boxy Brown had a knife and was going to attack everyone (I can't find a clip of it on youtube for a link, sorry).

Good thread idea, this is going to be a lot of fun.

I'll nominate all Nine Team Fortress 2 Classes:

-The Scout
-The Soldier
-The Pyro
-The Demoman
-The Heavy
-The Engineer
-The Medic
-The Sniper
-The Spy

Also, I'll nominate Bangladesh Dupree and Castle Heterodyne from Girl Genius

OH and Boyd Cooper (aka The Milkman) from Psychonauts, he's getting my vote for sure. Also Agent Crueller from the same game.

Caesar (real life too, power hungry)

Ambition = insanity now? Then hell, we're going to have a huge list.

The dogs of Animal Farm= this one is odd. The dogs act like vicious hounds which seems normal, however in the context of the story it's obvious they're broken husks of the animals they could be, all that's left being insane rage.

Griffin from H.G. Wells The Invisible Man= the best mad scientist of all time. A clear psychopath.

Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs= he did have a rather dashing suit though.

Norman Bates from Psycho= do I really have to elaborate?

Cardinal Roark/Kevin from Sin City= They hear voices of those they eat. That's slipping into the insane, dontcha think.

Batman from Batman= his obsession goes beyond sanity.

I'd definitely not call Julius Caesar insane. Ambitious, sure; amoral, probably, but hardly insane. When I think "insane" and "Roman Empire", I rather think of Nero and Caligula. But anyway, I thought this was for fictional characters?

The Narrator from Fight Club.
Tyler Durden from Fight club.

Rosharch from Watchmen.

The Punisher is arguably insane.

A crapload of Gotham citezens.

If Franky is insane, then Luffy is even more insane. Hell, who is not insane in One Piece, its a comedy manga. Read the newest Impel Gaol arc to see what I'm talking about.
