View Full Version : Not dying of old age?

Aside from turning yourself into a lich, how can you prevent this? Go to a plane where time is reversed? Polymorph into a younger version (does this actually work, I've heard people say it...) And if the polymorphing works, do you keep your aging benefits, keep the penalties, both?

Sorry, playing a character where the scope of the campaign means it might matter....

Cloud Anchorite from Frostburn becomes immortal at level 10. It's a monk-themed prestige class.

Reincarnate. It returns you to a young adult form of the race you get.

Note that doing anything to prevent your death by old age will probably result in marut death squads.

*Becoming an Elan (not the Bard, he just acts like he doesn't grow up).

*Taking all ten levels of Green Star Adept (though that class sucks).

*Reincarnating.

*Traveling to (or creating if you are epic) a plane where time flows backwards and just aging in reverse for a while.

Pretty sure that Killoren and Warforged don't have a maximum age limit either. Or Outsiders (but not Native Outsiders).

I'm pretty sure you don't age while on the Astral Plane. Thing is, once you come out, it happens all at once.

Most have been mentioned. Polymorph Any object may or may not work, but do note that it:
1) Affects your Intelligence score
2) Eventually means that one Greater Dispel Magic/Disjunction will kill you.

In addition to the listed means, there's a lot of critters a person can become that don't have aging tables - ghosts, for instance, although you probably won't want to eat the +5 LA ... they're also the only Core undead with no alignment tendencies - but most of the critters in the Monster Manual with a listed LA don't have aging tables. What that means for how long they live is up to the DM.

I wouldn't recommend it, but a flux slime (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/obstacles.htm#fluxSlime) has a 6 percent chance of making you age in reverse when it is destroyed. If you can find a lot of them, and deal with the other problems, you can use them to keep switching between normal and reverse aging.

Kobolds. Everything is bettter with Kobolds. A Dragonwrought Kobold lives 120 years +10xcha bonus. Ignoring magic items, a Kobold Sorcerer(or any class that can afford the Cha investment, but Sorc is the only one that can afford that) can, at level 1, have a death by old age of 170(190 with Flaws). Hit level 4, and it can be 190(210 with Flaws). All you have to do is take the Great Charisma feat once every 10 years, and put all level-ups in Cha, and you'll be progressing steadily further from death. And no inevitables will get upset, either.

I know the warforged one is true at least. Plus, then you get to be a magic robot.

What about turning yourself into a necropolitan?

Of course, you could always be a telepath and use true mind switch on a young victim whenever you hit venerable age. Do it enough, though, and the DM might just end up saying that you suddenly drop dead from the new body's previously unknown congenital heart condition. :smalltongue:

You can take 10 levels of Renegade Mastermaker, which ends with you becoming a Warforged.

There's an issue of Dragon with a 9th level spell that lets you burn some cash and XP to create a magic item (usually a ring or something) that stops your aging process as long as you wear it.

On a side note, they really should have done a portrait version of that spell. Or would that be too Grey?

I think the easiest would probably be finding a telepath Psion with "True Mindswitch (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/mindSwitchTrue.htm)"
Then find a third party, say, negotiating for a condemned prisoner, or a slave.

If you don't want to be bound by races and such

All from AD&D 2nd ed.

Longevity: The longevity potion reduces the character's age by 1d12 years, restoring youth and vigor. The entire potion must be consumed to achieve the desired result. It is also useful as a counter to magical or monster-based aging attacks.
Each time one drinks a longevity potion, there is a 1% cumulative chance the effect will be the reverse of what the consumer wants--all age removed by previous drinks will be restored!

Elixir of Youth: Quaffing this rare and potent elixir will reverse aging. Taking the full potion at once reduces the imbiber's age by 1d4 + 1 years. Taking just a sip first, instead of drinking it down, will reduce the potency of the liquid, and drinking the lower-potency liquid reduces age by only 1d3 years.

Amulet of Perpetual Youth: This amulet glows continuously with a faint, blue light. The wearer has temporary immunity to the effects of both natural and magical aging; the amulet grows older instead of the wearer. As the amulet ages, it gradually becomes dimmer. The amulet can absorb 5-30 (5d6) years of aging, at which time its light dims completely, its magic is negated, and the wearer resumes aging at his normal rate.

Just continue taking elixir's and making amulets as needed for a long life.

There's a spell in Book of Vile Darkness that lets you, if cast on a full moon, recover 1 week of aging per ability point drained. In theory, having an evil cleric or a wand of restoration nearby to restore ability points, you could recover a lot of age. I forget the name of the spell, though.

That was actually a really cool article. The whole thing explained playing a really old character, and had several ideas as to making your character immortal (among other things).

Make it to 21st level. Take Extended Life Span (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/feats.htm#extendedLifeSpan). Repeat as necessary.

Works best for elves, dwarves, and gnomes, who gain a century or two to get to their next epic feat. Even half-orcs get a decade to work with, though.

Eesh. You've only got so many feat slots, man, but if you're Epic, you've got as many True Mind Switches and Reincarnations as you'll ever need.
