View Full Version : Theme songs for your characters?

Hello all,

Lately I have found myself picking theme songs for my characters and listening to those songs before every session. Being a bit of a music-nerd I find this much fun, but it also makes it easier for me to get into character.

Is there anyone out there who also uses theme songs? If not, I can really recommend it, and if there are, I thought we could use this thread to discuss and show off our songs.

I choose themesongs only based on the emotion I get from the song. They should make me feel like my character. So sometimes it seems like the coice makes no sense at all, but it does to me. Keep in mind that I dont use these songs during sessions, only before. I use them for my own sake.

So, I'll start with my characters and matching songs.

I only have three characters in play right now.

Before playing my amnesiac, kindhearted and way to positive elven healer, (elves in Eon is very different from elves in DnD btw) I always listen to "För den som letar" by Lars Winnerbäck http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmO-OpwYXuk

I think my extremely paranoid and skittish psycher (from Dark heresy) constantly hears the entire Toxicity album by System if A Down play in her head, so naturally "Chop Suey" became her theme song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=466VHt8KldM
But I think "Lie, lie, lie" by Serj Tankian fits as well

My newest character is a feral guard (also dark heresy) and I havent really found a perfect match for her. But right now I am using "All along the watchtower" both the Dylan and the Hendrix version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCwCBh0z3Hs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkok1Z4WJuY

So, please comment and post your own themesongs.

(Please excuse my bad English, it is not my native language and my spellcheck is malfunctioning right now.)

I ran a Night caste boxer in an Exalted game once whose theme song was inexplicably "Click, Click, Boom" by Saliva.

And for some time, I played PbP wrestling ("E-fedding"), which is unique because the characters actually have theme songs. Some of my characters' entrance themes were "Cross my Line" by Aaron Waters, "Bone Cracker" by Shocore, and "I'm Alive" by Disturbed.

Haven't found any theme songs for my D&D characters, yet. But I'm always on the lookout.

EDIT: Left out links.

Hrm. I've only really thought of one character for theme songs, but this topic got me thinking. I'll try to think of ones for the rest of them someday.

Half-fiend (Nerfed down do no LA. Pretty much just charisma boost, smite good and 1 natural armor) Bard(Blade variant)/Warblade. He's come up with a couple of themes over the years.

Yay! I love the playground. I was just gone for a minute and already two replys.

Hehe, Click click boom seems to fit perfectly to Exalted I think. But, a wrestlinggame? Cool. ^^ I can see why the characters should have theme songs.

Dominhate was a powerful sing, seems to fit a half-fiend perfectly. =)

I also have the most trouble to find theme songs to my DnD characters. Why do you think that is? Modern day is a bit easier than fantasy to me, but I never has as mych trouble with my eon characters as my DnD ones. Odd.

We used to have a party in WoW who always played together and so I decided that we had two theme songs, one was Thousand Foot Krutch's Phenomenon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfgAdHBIdcQ) which was also dubbed "The Alterac Valley Theme" which depicted us doing various acts of badassery. The other was Hazel Fernandes "Number One" which I ended up choreographing a fight sequence to.

Mostly I use ambient music from anime's (the kind that have big orchestra scores) for my characters, though I did have one headbanging, moshing fighter who loved to scream "You can't kill The Metal!!" as he laid full plated smackdown on his enemies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0 - This one was really fitting for my gray elven wizard who was an introverted jerk for everyone except his younger sister. Too bad he died in the second session and I could never roleplay that out (and I really wanted to... and I didn't want to incorporate that to my other character, because it would be really cheapskate.) :smallfrown:

Ran a Warforged fighter once who had a thing for heavy metal music, and actually gave him ranks in perform (strings) to play. When he got to rocking out, we'd put on some Black Sabbath "Iron Man" or Iron Maiden "Run to the Hills". Much laughs were had.

This next one isn't really an RPG character, but rather an important character in a universe of mine. He was the king's only son for their faction (It's a sci-fi campaign setting), and was all set up to inherit it. Blah blah blah, stuff happens, he runs away because his dad goes crazy, his dad ends up trying to do something with a huge device. This character intervenes and ends up causing the device to malfunction. (Yeah, I'm being vague here.)

The ensuing blast devastated the planet, leaving very little life left and essentially killing most of the race. This last straw sent the character into an amnesiac semi-comatose state, standing alone on the structure where he fought his father. Currently he's wandering the galaxy in a constant daze, trying to recover any clues to what happened.

Enough rambling, on to the song: Which is really damn awesome.

I had a Warblade that I ran through a two year campaign. At the end of the first year I decided that his song was "Not My Time" by Three Doors Down. At the end of this last year, however, it changed to Indestructible by Disturbed

I was always intrigued by talk of theme songs for characters, but I've never really come up with anything good for characters of mine... nor have my players ever given me examples of theme music for their characters... so I'm kind of at a loss...

Holy Thunderforce (by Rhapsody) was the theme song for an elf paladin I played. Speedy, strong, and mildly obsessed with lightning.

That's the song I used for my war veteran human Paladin, who was basically a brick with a mace. (He had damage reduction, fast healing, very good armor, and a silly amount of HP).

There are a lot of Slayer songs that would fit. How about God Send Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucNFEE_dEA0)? Bloodline (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SdmsWBO7O4) is a more vampire-y song, but could work.

As a DM, I assigned every character a theme song or two, most of them video game remixes because that's what I actually have. On each person's turn, I set one of their themes on repeat. It's really helped us keep track of whose turn it is after we get sidetracked.

Jannbarr, a human who started Monk/Swordsage/Shadow Sun Ninja but swapped all that out for Lord_Gareth's Harrowed (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58810) after being raised from the dead, has only one theme song at the moment: Back Into Hell by Meat Loaf, which I can't seem to find online at the moment...
Brooklyn, the insane cleric of Olidammara (spelling?), has Booster Tarantino (http://www.last.fm/music/djpretzel/_/Super+Mario+RPG+Booster+Tarantino+OC+ReMix) by djpretzel and Wheel of Fortune (http://www.imeem.com/people/D2YWdt/music/IHRUzVVt/pirates-of-the-caribbean-dead-mans-chest-wheel-of-fortune/) from Pirates of the Caribbean 2.
Eellass, amnesiac Drow monk, is assigned Forbidden Memory (of a Forgotten Dream) (http://www.last.fm/music/Random+Hero/_/Sonic+the+Hedgehog+2+Forbidden+Memory+(of+a+Forgot ten+Dream)+OC+ReMix) by RandomHero.
Arkaun, recently unearthed Warforged Juggernaut, has Atonement (http://www.last.fm/music/Darangen/_/Chrono+Trigger+Atonement+OC+ReMix) by Darangen and, as a bit of a joke theme, The Incredible Singing Robot (http://www.last.fm/music/Star+Salzman/_/Chrono+Trigger+The+Incredible+Singing+Robot+OC+ReM ix) by Star Salzman.
Espera, the half-orc spiked chain wielding tripmonkey chick, has Beware the Forest's Mushrooms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GaoLRQX7Rs) by Nanaki's View and the Z.R.E.O. Team mix of Departure (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0lZ1sRA0v4).

I've got a couple more players, but they've recently brought in new characters and I haven't gotten around to themes for them yet.

Our party from a previous campaign had Yuki Kajiura's Salva Nos as our theme song. Meanwhile, of the same party, my wizard who specialized in probability control's theme song was Tatsuya Ishii's River because of the line "mou ichide kono tane chansuu"(if only I had one more chance). we played Yoshida Brothers during our games constantly.

I've been trying to think of a themesong for my current character since I first saw this thread with no luck. She's a duskblade and the daughter of two of the rulers of an undead-infested land. As a result, she's partly infused with negative energy, making her resistant to positive and negative energy, so she's hard to heal but stabilises easily.
(spoilered for the rest of the group, who aren't suppose to know.)

Any suggestions?

I have played two barbarians.

One Dwarven and one half-orc.

My latest character was the Half-Orc.

On the way from work to our gaming night, I'd blast some Pantera because I kind of picture "Gorg" as having Phil Anselmo's facial hair, right around the "Live 101 Proof" days.

Though Gorg is completely the opposite of Phil Anselmo, but that would be much better for "describe your best character" thread. (If said thread exsists)

Forgot to post this,

Our party is called the "Red Dawn Mercenary Group". That's right the one with Patrick Swayze.

We would hum the some of the music from that movie when the DM would mention our name.

It's not a song, exactly, but the Unlimited Blade Works speech (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZBAEk_Ugmk) from Fate Stay Night was the first thing that popped into my head when I read that. "Unknown to death, not known to life," etc.

I think the song Warcry of the Paladin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0hl_JjO1Xs) fits my Paladin of Freedom character, Dax. He's sort of become the teams comic relief when they're not fighting, so the songs campy lyrics seem to fit him.

I used The Retrosic's The Storm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guNaP2Zb4KU) for a CE Bounty Hunter, who happened to be a Bloodclaw Master. It's got a nice balance between Savagery and Purpose.

I had a Druid NPC that the Players drove insane through a combination of showing her up and defeating her in ritual combat. She exiled herself to meditate, and when she returned as a Blighter, I used Seen it All (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NH9L2gXt5c).

I have a number of Characters that I'd enjoy finding themes for. If I do find a theme I enjoy for a character, I'll update my list below.

Edit: Only one more needed!

Bladeweaver//Totemist - A gish with a bit more tribal/nature bent. Has so far survived 2 Near Total Party Kills. Taken Suggestion for Sepultura - Kaiowas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ0eIlu6pTQ)
In a BESM 3rd Ed game based on One Piece - a Captain who has power over wind. Great Navigator, a bit more serious and knowledgeable then most One Piece captains. Taken Suggestion for Ghost of the Navigators (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSOnn1gspjs)
In another BESM 3rd Ed game - a Swordsmith who is also a frontline fighter Breaking Benjamin - Until the End (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKKpd5piitc) is a good fit seeing how the campaign is based of Etrian Odyssey
In a 4e game - A Goliath shaman who is displaced from his tribe. A bit moodier, and focuses on the idea of the hunt. Taken suggestion for I hunt Alone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBVmcO1rINs)
In yet another 4e game - a Dwarf Druid//Invoker (Gestalt Homebrew) who focuses on serving Melora's will.

I didn't realise it until now, but ever since I created my Warforged artificer I've been listening to "Escort divison - Hikaru Nanase" from the Gunparade Orchestra soundtrack.

Well, here's some I can thing of

Bladeweaver-Kaiowas by Sepultura

Captain- either Ghost of Navigators by Iron Maiden, or Reise Reise by Rammstein

Swordsman-I would say Indestructible by Disturbed, but that's starting to become too common, i'd say a good one would be the theme from either the movie Gladiator or the game God of War.

Shaman-a good hunt song i think would be "Of Wolf and Man" by Metallica, but somehow i don't think that fits the flavor. "Bloody Roots" by Sepultura fits with the tribal flavor though.

Invoker- If the dwarf uses alot of fire, i'd say "Feuer Frei" by Rammstein. Also the Inquisition Daemonhunters theme from WH40K:Dawn of War would fit as good music for someone the will of a deity or powerful figure.

Never really thought about it but i'd say:
Druid - Last of the Wilds by Nightwish
Archivist - The Monster is Loose by Meat Loaf
Cleric of Torm - Holy Knight by Freedom Call
Tech Priest - Pharotek
Warblade - Steel meets Steel by Hammerfall

First of all, my group often gets sidetracked by something else mid-way through each person's turn. It's not uncommon for us to finish a song before the turn is done. We seriously only make about two encounters in a four-hour session, unless I've misjudged the difficulty of an encounter and they stomp it flat in two rounds.

However, to actually answer your question, I DM off my computer and have a Word document with direct links to the song files. When it's somebody's turn, I just click to the open document on the task bar and ctrl-click the appropriate link.

You're right though, it is a lot of switching. Arkaun barely gets past the opening of his songs before squishing somebody into a wall and ending his turn.

There was one ordinary human character I played in WoD who was generally known as Johnny Hothead, and after I'd played him long enough to realize what a self-destructive dullard he was, I had to pick Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg_rf2d894k) as his theme.

More recently, I realized my Chaos Sorcerer for 4e has to have either this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI7UvP0VdYk) or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eUAJYpwPSk) as his theme... but it's a chaos sorcerer, why not both?

Oh yeah, I've got to say that I can no longer think of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN3lC7N_XDk&feature=channel_page) as anything but a team of three Bards working together....

Well, my current character (Infernal Tiefling Warlock) is fire based, and pretty much a Pyromaniac.

"Hmm, how do we get past this possibly dangerous moss covering the floor? Hellish Rebuke!
Problem solved."

(Turns out, the moss was fairly harmless, unless we were already injured when we touched it...)

Anyway, if I had to pick a theme song for him, I'd have to go with "Disco Inferno", by The Trammps. Burn, baby, burn. :smallwink:

I use Locke's theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QazWtO7wZg&feature=related) from FFVI for my current character. He's a paladin/bard (our DM allows NG paladins) who intends to become a Knight of the Righteous Chorus (paladin/bard PrC from the Homebrew board.)

I was playing a spycraft game; my character was ex-KGB. His backstory was a ruthless killer trying to get back at Medendev for killing his father way back when (only he didn't know who it was and had to find out) and went down the interrogation grapevine:
"Do you know who killed my father?"
"No"
"Do you know who might know?"
*insert russian name here*
"Thanks" BLAM

His theme song? Well, this seemed oddly appropriate:

I often get character ideas from songs, much more often than the other way around. Unfortunately, I've not had any real themesongs for my characters :/

I sometimes base my characters actions on songs, too.

And one day, I hope to summon something powerful...
Something... unstoppable.

Hmmz, a fun concept.

I might try creating a character based around The Cure's Lullaby. I imagine it'd be a pretty freaky character...

Love doing it. I'm a bit of a "music nerd", too. I mean, I even NAME some of my characters after music terms.

Anyway, I'd have to say my favorite was my Half-Fey Paladin of Freedom in this Eberron game I was playing. I played him pretty close to myself in that position, and in fact in another game where I am playing myself, I'd consider it my theme, too: Kuusou Rumba. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HjBJmwj-Eg)

Of course a song with a (translated) line like "Staggering around in a mess, like the rumba" would have to be at least slightly Chaotic-aligned. :smallwink:

I would dearly love to one day have a character epic enough to truly deserve Coheed & Cambria's "Welcome Home" as its theme song. That would be nice.

This. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fL548OgEIk) It is the song of choice whenever my characters ride out and storm across the glens on a gallant steed.

My friends kind of got sick of me pumping my fist and chanting "FREEEEEDOOOOM!" whenever we rode somewhere though. :/

Seriously though, my Rogue/Fighter/Assassin Finn Connors was inspired in several ways by Mugen from Samurai Champloo, not least in his fighting style (though he fights with two dagger-gauntlets). So whenever I picture him leaping off walls and divebombing behind guys for a backstab, or doing a spin on his shoulder and kicking someone in the knee, or what have you, Sneak Chamber (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvhDttIxKPU) from the Champloo OST is what plays in my mind.

Initial inspiration for Finn came from this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-64CaD8GXw) song, though. :V

My chaotic evil fighter/rogue. He was essentially the parties killer and problem solver for when anything needed to be done but the good characters weren't willing to do it. Really enjoyed playing the fellow and the only character I retired instead of getting killed off. A complete psychopath and sociopath all the way through. (Though intelligent enough not to randomly kill a peasant, unless the peasant had something that he wanted of course)

Now I'm playing a Lawful Good fighter with a death wish after he lost his ward, to give an opposite feel. Still really like the character, though he's not as fleshed out since I haven't played him as much.
