I quite calling the odd character Poke now and then.

The last one was an extremely stupid dwarf barbarian, Poke the Idiot. He had a rope tied around his waist at all times, acting like a leash.

Voila! (http://www.translation-guide.com/free_online_translators.php?from=English&to=Latin)

Type in an adjective that is relevant to the character, change a few vowels around and you have an instant name. I use this all the time.

I prefer to use Gaelic language (http://www.irishdictionary.ie/home), but the principle is the same.

Or there's the Rinkworks Fantasy Name Generator (http://rinkworks.com/namegen/). Such pearls as:

Write out the consanents, write out the vowels, including Y, and number them. Roll 1d20 for consanents roll a d6 for vowels.

Now have at you!

But there are 21 consonants and five vowels...

But there are 21 consonants and five vowels...

Including Y. Including Y.

But there are 21 consonants and five vowels...

The counting gets far more complicated than that, but "and sometimes Y" is good enough for a simple generator.

Baby name websites.

No, seriously. They're incredibly useful. Here's a couple I use:

http://www.parenthood.com/babynames/baby-names.php Click on advanced search, that's way more useful. It allows you to go with the "adjective name" route, or just pick a letter and language/region you like and generate away.

http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/ Good simply for sheer volume.

And of course, no naming thread would be complete without mentioning Seventh Sanctum (http://www.seventhsanctum.com/index-name.php), for all your name-generating needs.

The one I used for a half-orc barbarian a while back was Vol-Krieger Strauss, of the Black Hills...

... but basically anything Germanic or Norse will probably sound about right. : )

I use this site. (http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/)

For Barbarian names, it would depend on what sort of culture the Barbarian comes from.

If they are 'blue eyes from the north' vikings, I'd go with Old Norse (http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/Europe-Scandinavia/index.htm) names, possibly combining fragments or name elements (http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/Europe-Scandinavia/Old-Norse/Names.htm) to get something that fits what I want. Hrafngeir (raven-spear) for a spear using grim dark-clad warrior or Steinketl (stone-cauldron) for an earth-shaman or Svartmund (black-hand) for someone famous for killing orcs until 'his hands were black with their blood' or whatever.

If the Barbarian is based off of a Native American culture (say Navajo (http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/America/North/Navajo.shtml) or Aztec (http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/America/South-Central/Aztec.shtml)), or a Mongol, (http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/Orient/Mongolia/index.htm) or a Maori (http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/Pacific/Polynesia/Maori.htm), or whatever, I'd just pick the appropriate sub-section and zip through the many, many choices until I find one that 'sounds cool.' Or just make something up that 'sounds right' for the culture I'm borrowing from.

With barbarians, I should say old scandinavian names, and then a title as a surname.
Like Olof Wolvesbane or Ragnar Shieldbreaker

A general rule I find useful with barbarians is use as many consonants as possible.

Scandanavian, Norse or Gaelic names are best.

Seven Blades of the First Horselord.

Why do barbarians need to have simple or rough sounding names? Give them flowery ones that teem of violence.

I like to go with the names used in the historical time period and social class that is the closest to my characters position and lineage in the game.
Thus, human knight in a pseudo-medieval world gets a real world north European name from the 12th century, while a wild mage from the woods might get an old Slavic name

No one's suggested Gork and Mork, you all disappoint me. :smalltongue:

Because they are not flowery enough. They are too short and crude.

"Willow Defies the Heavens" is also a good name for a barbarian.

Indeed, I might name my next Abyssal or Infernal that. And make him a Threshold barbarian. Probably from the Wyld but not a mutant or anything.
