I just realised (yay!) that Horace Greenhilt has the same differently sized boots as Roy.

Seen here: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0600.html

I do not know if that's common knowledge by now, I do not know what that means, but I *do* know it's one of the reasons why this comic is as great as it is. :)

The bigger boot is the one that's closest to us, the readers.

Gasp, that couldn't possibly be an example of the comic poking fun at itself, could it?

No.

Yes.

In the last panel, the larger boot is on Roy's left foot. Before it was on the right.

Yeah, except he's facing in the opposite direction on the last panel. The boot is on the same leg, the one that was "behind" him in the previous panels.

Isn't this true of any character who's wearing any kind of obvious footwear? And it's true of their eyes, too...the larger one is always closer to the camera. (This was rather more obvious with a certain one-eyed character from SoD, because his eye got bigger or smaller depending which way he was facing!).

Mis-read the thread title for a second. I thought "boots" was actually...

The style of character art is hereditary, apparently. Aww, he has his father's black dots for eyes, and the same ever-changing shoe sizes too.

Lol, same! I thought it would be about Crystal's weird body shape, which is different than all the other females.

Wow. Learn perspective. Roy is facing the opposite direction.

Yeah. Main character fighters apperantly get cool boots (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0600.html).

Little known fact: while still training to be a fighter, Roy's boots were full grey (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0491.html) with no semicircles.

(almost)Everybody else just has stick figure feet.

Please correct me if I'm overlooking somebody.

<headdesk>That's the bloody point. He's facing the other way, so now his left boot is closer, and so larger. They're not actually two different sizes, it just appears that way.

Most of the hard-core warrior types get different sized boots (Roy, Horace, Thog, members of the Cliffport police department).

They were like that for the first 200-odd strips, too...it was the big Art Upgrade around strip #198 that added the semicircles. Check out strip #188 for the last appearance of Roy in the old-style boots.

Not necessarily, Roy acknowledges that his boots have different sizes (it could be just for the sake of a joke, but still). It's one of those things that started as an artistic choice and then became a joke, with the original reason for the choice becoming less important along the way. There's a general tendency for characters with different sized boots to have the smaller boot in front of them, the larger one behind, but they boots still remain different even if the character is "facing" the viewer directly, or is "looking away" from them, which wouldn't make any sense if it was all about perspective.

Nah, I think Rich just wanted to keep the same "style" in the books too. Up until the strip with the art upgrade, Roy didn't have the detailed boots. Because the events of OtOoPCs happened before that strip, Roy still doesn't have detailed boots, but the art looks generally better still. :smalltongue:

EDIT: Oops. Just read a post by Rich, the book came out before that strip, but he wanted the art for the book to look nicer. So my entire post is pretty much incorrect. :smalltongue:
