View Full Version : Cheating in NWN - OK, so how do I activate cheatability?

So, I want to do so I can use cheats in Neverwinter Nights. I know I have done it in the past, but now I can't remember how, so I consulted IGN. IGN says that I should edit a line in the "nwn.ini" file, and then one in the "nwnplayer" file. I edit the line in the nwn.ini file. I cannot find the nwnplayer file. I try to run the game anyway. The game won't start. There is something wrong with the nwn.ini file. Argh. A little help would be appreciated.

Presumably (having not actually cheated in NWN), I would think you'd need to change the nwn.ini line back to what it was. Likely, when you change it, you're altering the game in a minor way, but the game doesn't respond to the player aspect (read: every aspect) unless you make the change in the nwnplayer file as well. If you're looking to make the cheat work, can't help, but if you just want to be able to play, this seems like the logical place to start.

This is why, before you alter any file personally, make a copy of that file under another name.

That way, if you cause an unforeseen problem, you just rename the file back, and overwrite your changes.

So the real question is: where is the nwnplayer file?

EDIT: Also, for future reference, which button is the cheat button? Tilde only works on american keyboards.

For non-American keyboards, press `. The key to the left of 1. Then you type in DebugMode 1 into the console.

So the real question is: where is the nwnplayer file?

The nwnplayer file should be in the NWN directory.

It should look like this:

Hm, it seems that I don't need to change any file in order to cheat. Well, all the better, then. Thanks for the help!

If your keyboard doesn't have the tilde button and you can't find the equivalent, cheat commands can also be entered through the chat interface. Press enter to start typing a chat message, and enter again to finish. You will have to add ## to the beginning of all cheat commands entered this way, but it's otherwise identical. "##DebugMode 1" as a chat message turns debug (aka cheat) mode on, for example.

Just download a character builder mod, set your level/alignment/gold/gear, export and start a new campaign with your sorcerer 39/paladin 1. I always found it amusing running through the Academy and tossing Hellballs at the goblins.

Also, once you activate Debug Mode, you can access a list of all available functions by pressing tab multiple times (it'll scroll you down the list).

Some useful ones are "dm_heal," which heals your character, the "+" key, which teleports your character to your cursor's location, the "." key, which as the DM Chooser has several functions, the "y" key, which instantly kills any enemy if you have your cursor over them, and the "dm_giveXP X," "dm_givelevel X," and "dm_givegold X," where X is the number of XP/levels/gold you want to receive.

EDIT: Also, you turn off Debug Mode by typing in DebugMode 0. And I would not recommend playing the game with Debug Mode on, as it can screw things up—just turn it out when you need it.

The only things you need to edit nwn.ini for are windowed mode and skipping all the movies before the start screen when you start the game.

One of my favorite cheats (except for the useful ones, like XP and gold) is SetAppearance. Want to look like a kobold? No problem? Chicken? Easy. Red dragon? Piece of cake, at least if you have no intention of going through doors. I'm actually making a list of available forms with numbers.

I remember my play through the main campaign as a Half-Orc Barbarian that looked like a chicken. Good times.

Allow me to save your brain a whole heap of hard work? (http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Appearance.2da) :smalltongue:

Since this seems to be turning into an impromptu NWN thread, can anyone tell me what they thought of the Advanced Modules sold on the website? I've given Pirates of the Sword Coast and Infinite Dungeons a go, and I'm interested to know which of the remaining has the better story. Numerous sources have told me "Kingmaker", but no one has expanded as to why it's so good.

Care to share?

The complete list of cheat codes (http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/code/188666.html) for NWN to be added on the command line in debug mode.
