The feat Disintegration Finesse, in Lords of Madness, states that the user can voluntarily reduce damage when using the disintegrate spell/spell-like ability. Is there any specific guideline anywhere as to just how accurate this reduction can be? For example...

Do you roll your full damage and then lower it by however much you wish?
Do you subtract however many dice you wish before rolling damage?
Can you deal less than the minimum possible damage?
Can you simply state "I want to leave the target with at least 1 hp" as you cast the spell?

Or is this just up to the DM to adjudicate? I am the DM in this case, incidentally.

I'd just have it work by decreasing damage die.
