Im sorry if this question sounds stupid. But doesnt a phylactery hold a lich's life force in it? If you throw it into the snarl, won't Xykon die immediately?

By standard DnD rules it should I think not to keen on the lich rules. But Rich has decided that the soul is only in the phylactery while the lich is "dead" as stated in SoD.
