the portable hole description doesn't really specify how much it can carry. Is there some sort of limit to this extra-dimensional space or can I eventually suck a lake dry with this?

Well, the opening is 6' in diameter, and the hole is 10' deep, so that's about 283 cubic feet assuming the hole is 6' in diameter all the way down. That's a bit more than a BoH IV, but not much. There doesn't seem to be a weight limit, though.

The enveloping pit from MiC is both cheaper and deeper.

Not in fact what she said.

Unfortunately, we don't access to the MiC in this campaign.

the portable hole description doesn't really specify how much it can carry. The weight isn't limited, but the volume is specifically stated. If you had the gold and melted it down, you could put in 17,033,015.41 gold pieces (weighing 170.33 tons).

Or, if you melted them down, approximately 30 supermodels. Probably 20 intact. (19 and a few bottles of air is probably preferable.) This assumes a height of ~6 ft, average width of ~1.5 ft, and average body depth of ~7 inches.

The enveloping pit from MiC is both cheaper and deeper. If you're a kobold.

And unless you're carrying around styrofoam or balsa wood, a Bag of Holding will reach its weight limit long before its volume limit (about a tenth full, for most organic matter, or much less for metals).
