Around the world certain spots have abnormally strong levels of magic, with potent effects on spells and creatures within. Some believe the ley lines are the source of magic and the ambient magic covering the rest of the world just the pittance that leaks out from them.

Ley lines are usually a circular area of land or ocean about fives miles in diameter. They are unusually flush with life and water, including many magical creatures and plants. Even in the middle of a desert a ley line will be as lush as a jungle.

Magic

All spells cast within a ley line are automatically empowered and extended, without any extra effort on the caster's part.

Anti-magic fields cannot exist inside a ley line.

Animals

After spending a month in ley line any animal's intelligence will increase to 4 for as long as they remain within the area. They can be taught to understand (but not speak) languages at that intelligence.

People
Naturally intelligent creatures can draw on the ley line's powers at will, without any magical training.

All people can automatically use Prestidigitation and Arcane Sight without limit.

Certain spells require a will or fortitude check. Spells will last for a minimum of one minute if the person is not a caster. Each time the ability is cast it requires a new roll. If a roll is failed a person cannot attempt to cast that specific spell for eight hours (this does not affect a caster's normal use of these spells).

A DC 15 will check can cast these spells on themselves: Fly, Water Breathing, Shield

A DC 20 will check will allow them to cast Dimension Door.

A DC 20 strength check will allow them to cast Regenerate on themselves, however this ability can only succeed once per day.

Life In A Ley Line

Despite the magical abilities they gain, few people stay within a ley line for long due to the usual abundance of dangerous creatures.

If people do venture in it's usually to either to hunt these rare creatures, or to pursue certain magical phenomena.

Most leylines will usually have one or more of the following hidden in its area:

A healing spring - A single sip automatically heals all missing hp, cures all poisons and regenerates missing body parts. The water loses potency quickly though and becomes ordinary water if bottled.

An oracle - Often a stone or tree housing a powerful spirit willing to answer a single question with impressive detail and accuracy.

Flowers of life - These rare flowers grow randomly in a leyline's area. Often there is only a single one hidden in the entire area. If squeezed out the fluid of these flowers can be poured into a corpse's mouth to cast True Resurrection upon it.

it's a garou healing caern!

kidding. cool stuff. some of it seems kind of random, but it is still cool. also, ley lines are usually linked places of power (as far as i am aware), like a chain or something. this is more like a nexus or something. if you specifically want a ley line, give it some other property that is dependent upon the other ley lines that it is linked to, or how many are within a certain radius or something.

Based off what stycotl said this could maybe be where 2 ley lines intersect? But this is way cool. And also Dresden reference gives you bonus points on the cool-o-meter.

Perhaps ley lines could have portals leading to other ley lines hidden within them.

that actually makes perfect sense, and makes me wonder why i didn't catch that before. that would be the premise anyway, the nexus between the ley lines.

that is certainly a cool idea. you'd have to make it with specific rules or destinations in mind. in werewolf, they had moon bridges that were like interplanar gates that connected the caerns (nexuses).
