If your an assasin and you are evil, you put some ranks into it and you have a change of heart and become good, do you lose all of your assasin abilities that you gained and if you become evil again can you start gaining assasin abilities again or is it like monk where you become an ex monk you can never get monk abilities again.

Unless specified in the class description (such as the Monk and Paladin's restrictions on gaining levels, or a Barbarian's need to be Chaotic to Rage) losing the right alignment just means you can't advance until you get it back. You retain all your abilities given by class levels you already have and can get more later on.

By Strict RAW, you lose all the abilities gained from a PrC except for saves, BAB, and proficiences if you don't meet the prerequisites (such as alignment). This is, however, stupid, as it leads to such things like a Dragon Disciple 10 becoming stuck in an infinite loop of gaining and losing his class features. Thus, the most sensible way to handle it is like the above poster said.

Most alignment restrictions are pretty moronic anyway. We've always done away with them, so long as your willing to put the effort into a half-baked back story for why you're a good person who is highly trained at stabbing people in the kidneys, or what have you.

But, if you're playing by RAW, well, the above posters have already covered that.

If you want to play a good assasin, check out the avenger on thewizards site, it is exactly the same only with different allignment restrictions ( Either lawful or chaotic, i can't remember which)

Sort of.

See, in 3.0, that was in the Prestige Class header in the DMG; it was removed in the 3.5 transition.

You'll still find it in a few spots - most notably Complete Warrior, page 16 - but the locations where you find it are also early 3.5 books, that were plagued with editing errors elsewhere. Plus, as you say:

By Strict RAW, you lose all the abilities gained from a PrC except for saves, BAB, and proficiences if you don't meet the prerequisites (such as alignment). This rule appears only in Complete Warrior and Complete Arcane, not anywhere else (like, say, the DMG, where PrCs were first introduced). In fact, just going by the DMG, you only need to meet prereqs to take the first level of a class: There's no rule against your hypothetical reformed assassin taking more assassin levels.

I think the most common interpretation is that you do need to meet prereqs every time you level up in the class, but that you only lose class features if it's a class from Complete Warrior or Complete Arcane or if the class says so explicitly. And, of course, if a class feature itself is the reason you lose the prereqs, then it doesn't matter.

An assassin shouldn't lose abilities just because they had a change of heart. The only reason they made it evil is because evil people are the only ones who'd kill for money/fun exclusively. Their not like a paladin who's virtue grants abilities, their like a fighter, who learns and grows better as he goes. I'd say you'd have to be evil to enter, but could still gain levels if you change alignment.
