Drawing an unkempt beard?

k, I'm trying to sorta draw myself which is admittedly very difficult I dont have a recent picture, but I one of those kind of slow growing beards that resembles a carpet going from the adams apple area of the neck my jaw, any suggestions on how I would draw this.

Urm, I've got no idea how you'd draw it, but a few of my avatars have beards, so maybe they'll give you some inspiration.

Just use, like, a dozen short, thin lines.

Yeah, as ninja said, I'd draw a bunch of really small lines close together.

in inkscape how would I change the default stroke size for the pencil tool?

Same place you would any other stroke size, with the fill and stroke window.

Doesn't work, if all I do is select the pencil tool the fill and stroke window is greyed out until I draw something, only then can I fool around with its settings.

Draw one line. Set it's thickness to whatever number you want. Keep it selected.

Go to File->Inkscape preferences. Go to pencil. Set it to use own style and click the button that says something like take from selection.
