I mean the last one we got was arguably this one (and even then it might not count, as it does advance the plot slightly): http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0622.html
If you don't know what I mean by gag strip I mean one that doesn't really advance the plot in any way and exists only for a joke, one prominent example I can think of is this one:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0136.html
Or of course the ever-classic:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0439.html

Anyway, my point is, when do you think we'll next get one of these?

I would not mind if we'd not see the next gag-strip beyond 700. An intense story (with some funny things at the side) is better than gag-for-the-sake-of-gag (even when they are good gags!).

But since Rich serves (he stated so in his print works) both audiences equally well, I bet you won't have to wait for long.

I'd class the comic where Haley stole the diamond from the cast page as a pure joke comic as well (it's not as if it was needed for plot purposes being as it was creating what turned out to be a very minor setback which occured so that the joke could happen).

No. They went to the city of thieves and nothing was stolen? Please. It was essential for suspension of disbelief that his diamonds be stolen. Anything less would have been terrible writing

Yes, that was sarcastic :smalltongue:

What makes you think that it isn't highly significant to the overall plot? I predict that ...

The bard will be a major villain in the next plot arc, Fatal Attraction style. Mr Scruffy had better watch out he doesn't end up in the pot.

Well it was one more instance of V's UAP not being necessary.

But both of these have plot elements. Establishing that Roy can't get a replacement weapon, and that Belkar was doing OK on his own on the battlefield. The strip consistently mixes plot and jokes. Both 660 and 651 can be deemed joke strips if one insists on classification.

I don't think any of those three really qualify. The first one is a summing-up strip with a punchline. The second one shows Roy trying and failing to get a new weapon, before it becomes quite important that he doesn't have one. The third one shows Belkar killing all those hobgoblins--it's a plot-based strip with a punchline.

Ehh... there'll always be jokes in it. I mean, for goodness sakes, one of the most intense strips to date has had a poo joke in it!

Best "gag strip" that I can remember was the Nowhere/Somewhere babble when Roy and company were at the inn with that woman paladin. Someplace Else must be a great democracy. :D

She was a level 3 rogue/bard/sorcerer when haley left the guild, and didnt have the benifits of a PC Rival. Imo, she would go down in one hit by any of the Order. Including Elan. Hell Ill bet that even Celia could. (That is, if she would

I think he's referring to the bucket (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0654.html). Nothing like good toilet humor :smalltongue:

666. nothing will happen and they will all make note yet again about how people may be expecting something to happen since it is a big number, and yet...nothing of any importance will happen.

There's some of the early classics, like that "up a level - down a level" exchange.

Those mentioned in the OP are not purely gag strips, neither the "King of Somewhere" one. However, "Up a level, down a level" is (as most obvious), plus some others, like:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0033.html

Why make a gag without plot, if you can make a gag AND advance the plot at the same time?

Why make a gag without plot, if you can make a gag AND advance the plot at the same time?Eh, why be a wizard when you can be a wizard and a fighter at the same time? If you focus on one thing, you'll probably do better at it. (That said, some of the best strips have advanced the plot too, so I'm not really bothered either way)

Because the Giant is the webcomic writer equivalent of a Gestalt character: he can do both excellently at the same time!
