I really don't get why Xykon is so annoyed about losing his phylactery:
In a few years, it will be fished up by a couple of mutant halflings, who will then fight over it. One of them gets killed and the other flees with his shiny trophy. He eventually starts lurking in a cave somewhere, caressing the phylactery and calling it his "beloved" or something. The mutant halfling then gets tricked out of it by a slightly boring and whiny halfling, who then dumps it on his adpoted offspring to dispose of.
All Xykon needs to do is place an army of undead around the Rift of Doom, there by preventing any foolhardy questing types from chucking it in there.
