Harpoon shark

The harpoon shark is a large marine predator. These large animals are quite slow swimmers but they have a unique adaptation that allows them to catch prey that are much faster than they are. That is a large harpoon like appendage that extends from their snout. They can fire this harpoon out and wound creatures, allowing it to swim up and eat them at the shark’s own pace.

Blind sense
A harpoon shark can locate creatures underwater within a 30-foot radius. This ability works only when the shark is underwater.
sent
A harpoon shark can notice creatures by scent in a 180-foot radius and detect blood in the water at ranges of up to a mile.

Harpoon
Using specialized muscles in the creatures’ snout a harpoon shark can fire its harpoon like appendage. It has a range increment of 30 feet. Treat this as a ranged attack using the shark’s strength modifier. The fired harpoon itself deals 1d12 damage. If the harpoon deals damage, it lodges in the target if it fails a reflex saving throw (DC equal to 10 + damage dealt). A harpooned creature moves at half speed and cannot run or charge. If the harpooned creature attempts to cast a spell it must succeed a concentration check dc 15 or loose the spell.

Once the harpoon is fired the harpoon is wasted and cannot be retrieved by the shark. The shark begins growing a new harpoon immediately after firing its pervious one. It takes 1d3 days for the sharks to regrow a lost harpoon. Apparently by all accounts the sharks are capable of eating their own harpoons and suffer no ill effects. The appearance of each individual harpoon a harpoon shark grows varies. No two are alike.

The harpoon shark can also use its harpoon as a gore attack, should such a situation come up.

Combat:
Typically the harpoon shark tries to get into harpoon range before firing its harpoon. Using the run action, it then swims up to it and attacks it, ripping off pieces of its flesh while the wounded prey tries to flee. When attacked the harpoon shark usually uses its gore attack to injure the creature. Then it follows up with bite attacks. Should the creature attempt to flee it will use its harpoon ability to slow it down while it catches up.

The dire harpoon shark is a bigger, faster, meaner cousin to the typical harpoon shark.

Combat
Typically a dire harpoon shark tries to get into harpoon range before firing its harpoon. It then uses the run action to catch up to it and attacks it. Using their powerful jaws, they can swallow smaller creatures in one gulp. When attacked the harpoon shark usually uses its gore attack to injure the creature. Then it follows up with bit, improved grab and swallow whole attacks. Should the creature attempt to flee it will use its harpoon ability to slow it down while it catches up.

Improved Grab (Ex)

To use this ability, a dire shark must hit with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can try to swallow the foe in the following round.
Swallow Whole (Ex)
A dire shark can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of up to one size smaller by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 2d6+6 points of bludgeoning damage plus 1d8+4 points of acid damage per round from the shark’s digestive juices. A swallowed creature can cut its way out using a light slashing or piercing weapon by dealing 25 points of damage to the shark’s digestive tract (AC 13). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out.

Harpoon
Using specialized muscles in the creatures’ snout a dire harpoon shark can fire its harpoon like appendage. It has a range increment of 40 feet. Treat this as a ranged attack using the shark’s strength modifier. The fired harpoon itself deals 2d12 damage.

It takes 1d3 days for the sharks to regrow a lost harpoon. Apparently by all accounts the sharks are capable of eating their own harpoons and suffer no ill effects. The appearance of each individual harpoon a harpoon shark grows varies. No two are alike.

A Huge dire harpoon shark’s gullet can hold 2 Large, 8 Medium or Small, 32 Tiny, 128 Diminutive, or 512 Fine or smaller opponents.
Keen Scent (Ex)

A dire shark can notice creatures by scent in a 180-foot radius and can detect blood in the water at a range of up to 1 mile.

skills
All Harpoon sharks have a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. They can also use the run action even while swimming, provided they swim in a straight line.

Harpoon shark weaponry
Darfellan some times harvest Harpoon sharks for their harpoons. They then craft them into fine harpoons ore spears for their own use. A spear or harpoon made from a harpoon shark’s harpoon is treated as a masterwork weapon. Its not uncommon to find magical harpoons or spears made out of Harpoon shark harpoons.

Sweet! I like 'em. I would advize putting the harpoon attack into his Attack entry. Also, they should be able to do both attacks in a full round.

Thanks I originally had my eyes set on a gigantic puffer fish thing. But this sort of evolved from that idea. Not that that idea is a bad one… I just made this one first.

I'll take the full attack suggestion under consideration.
