For those who wonder, this is "Germany in the Playground".

:smalltongue:

Gruß aus um und bei Hamburg.

Holidays? Running from home?

(I'm not sure I can attempt to write even that in German. :smallfrown: )

Sweet, a thread I can read to practice my German! I'd post in German if I weren't afraid of my atrocious grammar being remarked on.

Ah, don't worry, no one's perfect. My spoken german is horribly accented, and we use it nearly as often as swiss german.

Auf die Art machst du aber gleich einen schlechten Eindruck wenn du deine Deutschkenntnise zeigen willst indem du etwas über Bier sagst. :smallamused:

I'm at (on? in?) university in Bayreuth since 4 years. But recently I realized how much this really is like a different country. The language may be almost the same, but i have to say I'm feeling more at home in Denmark or the Netherlands than in south germany.
And yes, there a times in fall, when you find yourself missing the clammy, rainy weather all october.

Yyyhmmm....

* head kapoof *

Honestly, I've been learning German for 5 years, and didn't grab it at all :smallannoyed:

I can sing about Alkohol and call people Mistvieh und Schwein, but that's about it.

Actually, I've never heard anyone call a person "Mistvieh". It's usually used to refer to gnats or other bothersome animals.

Posting from Karlsruhe. Not sure what else to say.

You're not making a very good first impression if all you can say in German is beer related. Or something.

Yeah, I studied German for 7 years but I've been steadily forgetting it all for 5 years now. Um. "Hallo! Wie geht's?"

Apparently you didn't read Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Good_Soldier_Švejk).

It's full ouf delicious German insults.

" Du Mistviech! Du Schwein ! Du Sielesny! "

:smalleek: Why not?!

Beer is the gift for humanity. :smallwink:

Well, looking back, it could be the exact contrary. "You'd have made a worse first impression if you hadn't said something about beer." See what I mean about steadily forgetting everything? :smalltongue:

Better wait for a native speaker to translate that.

There are far too many of these "Location in the Playground" threads. For now I am going to rule that there can be a maximum of one for each continent (using the 6 continent model (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent#Number_of_continents), see below). We are considering restricting this even further, but for now the following ones would be ok.

Australia
North and South America (combined)
Europe (including Great Britain, etc.)
Africa
Asia

P.S. Unless you actually live in Antarctica, don't even think of creating an "Antarctica in the Playground" thread.

Additionally, I'd like to point out how rude it is to speak in a language that only a few people can understand in public. This is an English speaking board, with English speaking moderators, talking in a language other than English is not only inconsiderate to those who don't speak the language, but exceptionally hard to moderate. Therefore, we generally only allow it in exceptional circumstances.
