View Full Version : The Weekly Life In Simon's Basement - An OotS Style Comic

Salty
2009-06-14, 09:04 PM
To summarize the premise of my comic briefly, it is the humorous misadventures of a group of teenagers trying to play a campaign of D&D.

This comic can be found on my Deviantart page (http://1337salty.deviantart.com/), and its own site (http://wlisb.thecomicseries.com/) (sort of), but I will also post links to the direct images. I would advise reading through it via the site, mainly because it would be easier to navigate through the comics. I leave the decision up to you, however.

Hey, Listen! (http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs47/f/2009/183/2/b/SSBB_Comic_2_by_1337Salty.jpg)

A few things you should know about the comic.

1. The name is a parody of a comic a friend of mine once wrote. I won't go into too much detail, he no longer writes it, but I figured you should know. Also, this comic is based on my games of D&D, and they took place in the basement of my friend's house when I decided on a comic name. His name is Simon. This shouldn't cause you any further questions.

2. Yeah, their heads are ovals, not circles. If you feel strongly about this, let me know. It was originally caused by a bad monitor, but I've fixed that problem. Updating all the characters would take a bit of time and effort, though, and none of the readers at the time really felt that it would be necessary.

3. Yes, I know some parts seem to be ripped off of OotS. For example, Dave, Jack, Stumpy, some of my jokes, etc. I have already been working on branching away, but keep in mind that the characters aren't as shallow as they appear, and the difference between my comic and the Giant's should become more noticeable as time progresses.

Feedback would be excellent!

Did I say that it was an original style? :smallconfused: Also, I'll be adding background as soon as the character introductions finish. So in about 2 comics.

I like it. Very much, actually.

Two nitpicks though:
If Jack's char is a girl, then why doesn't she have any boobs? :smallconfused:
And Dave's jumps are to stiff. It's basiclyy a standing-position that you turned.

Thanks! Jack's character doesn't have a specified gender yet. I realize the gag is overdone, and I will probably reveal it after I milk it a bit, but I guess you could imagine that he is incredibly flat chested, or his thick shirt covers up any indication. As for Dave, thanks for the advice. I really wasn't that sure about it, and I'll try to improve it the next time I have him jump.

Yes, because ALL women everywhere have humongous, earth-shattering breasts. :smalltongue:

Also, I am reading this comic as well. I have to say, I am slightly bored due to the lack of plot, but that will fix itself shortly, I suppose.

Good luck, Salty!

I like the way its actually a D&D campaign. Meaning that the characters break rules like no talking when unconscious as well ^^
You should do a gag about the Players talking OOC and DM counts it as the Characters are randomly chatting which gives their position away or something =3

I had to add the dashes mainly because there is no better way that I could think of to show how Dave was pronouncing it. Except maybe italics. Crap. Oh well, the comic's staying like it is.

Pretty neat little comic, the characters do feel a tad generic though. But reading comics 2-6 I guess that was the point. The art could use a little cleaning up, but nothing that won't improve itself over time. I do however, find the wide oval heads to be a bit weird. :smalltongue:

Yeah, I agree with you, for now, anyways. I have plans to have him deviate from Belkar's nature soon enough, but for now, he appears to be nothing more than a rip-off.

Oh, and the about the oval heads mentioned above; that was unintentional. I didn't even realize that their heads were ovals until someone pointed it out and I checked it on my iPod. Until I get a new monitor, however, there isn't much I can do. Afterwords, I'll probably fix it, unless a lot of people suddenly agree with Fayte. It could happen.

I agree with Fayte - I find different heads interesting.

Also, maybe you should try to clarrify what level they're at - It'd be refreshing for a 1st-level webcomic instead of (excuse my 4th edition language, it's all I know) Paragon- or Epic-tier.

Yes, they are at 1st level. I was hoping that this seemed clear since they rolled up characters in the first comic. Maybe I'll make a reference to their level later.

You brought this upon yourselves.

Also, I've been receiving feedback about this, so I have a question to ask. I recently got a new monitor, which is slightly better than my old one, and I am now able to work with plain circular heads. But the question is, should I? Some of you say that you are attached to the oval heads. Keep in mind when responding that if I change the heads, it will take a while to change all of my pre-made images, so the updates will be less frequent. Thoughts?

I can nitpick though!

Panel 5: The speech bubbles are in the wrong order. When you read, you read from left to right. When the bubbles are in the wrong order, the dialouge gets all funny. It's a little frustrating to read. Don't worry though, this is an error I've seen in alot of comics :smalltongue: Just try to keep it in mind.

Okay, maybe I haven't exactly reached the deadline I made. No where near it, in fact. A lot has come up so far, and I haven't had a good opportunity to make more comics. I'm hoping to get back into a somewhat regular schedule soon, but I can't promise anything. I can, however, give you this comic (http://fc05.deviantart.com/fs50/f/2009/268/b/a/1st_Anniversary_by_1337Salty.gif), which I made in celebration of my 1st full year of writing comics. It's basically a giant ad for my Deviantart page (http://1337salty.deviantart.com/), so make of it what you will. Speaking of which, if you're at all interested in the comic, you can get a rough idea of what's coming next by reading the hand-drawn WLiSB comics (http://1337salty.deviantart.com/gallery/#Rough-Drafts) I have up there. The art is terrible, and I hadn't really gotten the hang of writing comics yet, but it goes to 26, and I'm going to base the next comics off of them.

In short, I do plan on making more comics, I have a lot planned for this comic, such as new characters, villains, and an actual plot; but I don't know when I'll have an opportunity to work on those. I hope to add more soo, but we'll see how that turns out.

It certainly is nice to hear some feedback.

I agree with you somewhat on Stumpy's hair, but it definitely needs an upgrade. Technically speaking, it didn't really conform to standard OotS style hair, and, while not necessarily a bad thing, I thought it seemed out of place. If you have any specific aspects of it you liked, let me know. He's not scheduled to appear until comic 14, so I'll have time to give him another upgrade.

Hmm... after looking a little more closely, I think the thing I like about Stumpy's (Yey! I learned someone's name!) old hair is the fact that it's not that tall, in fact not any taller than how tall he actually is. The new hair feels a little to tall for me, nad also since it's more spikey it feels like he's been using some hair-product to make it look like that, and that's not very fantasy :smalltongue:

EDIT: But for god's sake, I'm just a whiney little fifteen year old kid. JUst do it the way you like it :smallamused:

Certainly!

Yes, you will see them adventuring soon. The opening is rather slow, which is partially intentional. They will definitely be given their first adventure in comic 20, along with the introduction of a new character. I do have a long-term plot planned, but it will be a while before that's mentioned. The long beginning is representative of the beginning of most of my campaigns, which usually take a few hours to get to, as the comic should make obvious.

Another comic's done!

I feel this one deserves a bit of an explanation, though. You see, when I first started this comic, it was even worse than it is now. :smallamused: It was hand-drawn, and my readers were almost entirely comprised of the people that were in it. I've been expanding, and I have plans for a full story and work to make it more accessible to people who don't know us personally, but I felt it was only right to recreate what I had done so far. With some changes, of course. Unfortunately, that doesn't always work out. This comic, in particular, was rather difficult, since it was comprised entirely of inside jokes. I was faced with a conundrum; if I changed it, I would have to do a major rewrite of the next few comics, but if I left it, no one would know what would be going on.

My decision was to give the reader a basic understanding of these inside jokes with bonus strips. I highly recommend re-reading these (http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs47/f/2009/165/c/b/Bow_Envy_by_1337Salty.jpg) two (http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs46/f/2009/162/4/5/Free_Will__What_Free_Will__by_1337Salty.jpg) before starting this one.

Cheese is based on someone in real life, which is part of the reason I thought that this comic contained too many inside jokes. But yeah, I guess all of those emotions apply. In reality, she was about 13 when I first wrote this comic, and her personality hasn't suffered a major change in the past year or so.

Hmm...Interesting idea, although I made a few couple of changes to Dave that I'm not going to reveal for a couple more comics. I see your point, but it really helps illustrate a change in volume, such as when they're shouting or mumbling. I might include a slight change in font as well to help separate the two, but I don't think it'd work as well in those situations if I left it the same size.

I wasn't all that happy with how this came out. The original joke was made because Dave would draw mustaches on the hand-drawn comics, but that didn't really work for this version. I faced the decision of either rewriting this comic, or restructuring this entire group of comics. This seemed like the best choice.

Yeah, that's intentional. I originally hand-drew the comic (you can see the crappy originals on my deviantart, if you are so inclined), and I'm still in the process of remaking them. Every so often I think of a good comic to place in certain areas, so I've made a few extra comics, such as after 7 and 8. This entire arc of them saving Jon is a bonus arc, seeing as how I skipped over it originally, so that might spoil a bit about how it's resolved, but I hope you enjoy it all the same.

I don't know about "everything", but I will admit that a lot, especially closer to the beginning, is quite similar to OotS.

I have been trying to spread out, and that should be more evident later on, but I'm still mostly working with comics that I wrote quite a while back. After comic 26, they will all be brand new, so I'll have more room to show a more original side. That'll most likely involve me dropping Jack's gender ambiguity, hopefully giving Stumpy some more personality, and, of course, better establishing Dave as a separate character. I agree that he really does need a shift from where he is now, but I'm not going to go as far as you suggested. Still, some new tendencies and personality traits should be showing up soon, as I hinted here (http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs47/f/2009/172/e/5/Just_to_f____With_You_by_1337Salty.jpg).

The last few (with the letters included in their numbers, such as 18c) are bonus comics that I've written more recently. The others, such as 18, were written about a year and a half ago, and are only now being made digitally. I'm tweaking the dialogue somewhat, but it's still pretty similar to how it was when I was just starting out.

That's the end of the changes I wanted to have made, so comic 24'll be up Friday.

26: Searching... (http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/267/5/e/searching______oots_by_1337salty-d2ze2ja.png)

This marks the end of the comics I originally drew by hand. Basically, this means that my comics will no longer be based on work I made almost two years ago, when I first started making comics, but will instead show a lot more of what I've learned in this...wow, two years? Really? Okay...two years of making comics. To put that in perspective, I very nearly cut that last comic because I wasn't too fond of it, and I really only kept it in since I had almost finished without making any major changes (although if I did cut it, I would have missed that great "pun damage" line, Zersk ). The bonus comics, however, are more recently written, so they might give you a better idea of what the comic will be like now.

Long story short, the comics will hopefully be better, but I probably made the change sound much more dramatic than it really will be.

Now for some bad news, unfortunately. With school back in, I've got nowhere near as much free time as I did before, so I'm going to have to restart my hiatus. You'll probably see some comics every now and then, but there's no way I'll be able to maintain a regular update schedule and keep my sanity.

I'm glad to see there are more people reading this here, and thanks for your comments and your interest!

That could be fairly soon, but summer's approaching, so there'll be a lot more then. Half my archive was made last summer, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was more this year.

Doh. Also why are their heads so low?

Are you referring to this strip, or the comic in general?

I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about, but they do have slightly oval-shaped heads, which could cause what you're seeing. I mentioned it in the first post, but I'll put it here again to clarify.

2. Yeah, their heads are ovals, not circles. If you feel strongly about this, let me know. It was originally caused by a bad monitor, but I've fixed that problem. Updating all the characters would take a bit of time and effort, though, and none of the readers at the time really felt that it would be necessary.

If that isn't the problem, or even if it is, I would appreciate it if you elaborated. I never mind advice about improving my work!

Technically it's the 52nd if you count 10a.

This comic may seem a bit filler-y but that's because it is. I wanted to take this time to announce a change in my archive. I will be making a few changes to past strips to improve the comic as a whole. Comics 1 through 8 will be consolidated into one big introduction strip. They were the first comics I wrote, so they were amateurishly written. Not to mention it is a very slow beginning, and I fear it scares away readers with lower-quality strips. Additionally, I'm eliminating the bonus strips. I enjoyed the concept, but realized I had no more planned, and I thought the imbalance between the frequent bonus strips in the beginning and the complete absence later on would be peculiar. The "Saving Paladin Jon" arc will be upgraded to plainly-numbered strips. The ones after strips 7 and 8 will be cut, since I feel their quality is sub-par, and the ones after 23 will be cut since they fix a few problems that I will retroactively cut. 31a will also be upgraded to a full strip. Oh, and this comic will be cut, too. This means that, all in all, the later strips will be numbered two higher than they currently are. Remastering old strips is a dangerous road that has killed many a webcomic, so I will be careful. I will leave the art the same, and only make some minor dialogue edits. These changes will be carried out over the next few days, and by next week this should be fully resolved.

I will, of course, keep the original strips online in some form, either here or on a separate page. It is also incredibly important to me that I get your feedback on this change; the entire purpose is to improve the comic, and the only opinion that matters is that of my readers. Thank you all so much for your support.

Out of curiosity what game system is this comic based on? I half want to figure out the stats of some of them (I already know Wesly has 5 hp and a single point of con). Also there is a good chance that they have good dexterity and they have good wisdom.

As long a there is a way to still see those comics I am ok with the changes.

New comic! I ended up taking last week off after restructuring the archive.

39: He Must Have the Improved Interrogation Feat (http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/177/1/1/he_must_have_the_improved_interrogation_feat_by_13 37salty-d6as9ya.png)

It's a prerequisite for the Guantanamo Guard prestige class.

There's no hidden political statement one way or the other; "Enhanced Interrogation" just sounds a hell of a lot like a feat.

The archive restructure is officially done! I'm considering creating a small site to store all of the unedited strips, but for now, everything's up and running as it should be. I would love it if you look back through the archive and tell me what you think of the change.

I've been using Pathfinder as the system as far back as I can remember, but I noticed a couple of the first comics seem to be made with 3.5 in mind (Simon's health, in particular, is remarkably low for Pathfinder). I would update it to make it consistent, but I just cut those strips, so it doesn't really matter now. And while I don't have character sheets made out for them, I have tried to be consistent whenever I make reference to any stats or mechanics, and I would love to see what you come up with!

Also just pointing this out, in comic 38, a natural 20 in a skill check is not an automatic success

Impressive! I don't remember intending Wesley to have a sword, but can you tell me which comic you got it from? I'd be happy to clear that up.

I imagine solid info will be few and far between, I'm afraid. I'll probably be vague if I can get away with it; I don't want to accidentally limit future strips.

As for the automatic success thing, I had it wrong for a while when I started running games, and when I realized my mistake, I decided I preferred it the way I was doing and kept going. I don't think I've come across a scenario where 20+modifier wasn't enough. You could chalk it up to Jack being a new player was wrong, though, if you prefer.

He reaches for a sword on the wall in this episode, assumedly he kept it as he has not been in town yet and there is no reason to drop it.

I figured it was something like that just felt I should point it out. It is usually enough but sometimes it just doesn't make sense for something to work even on a natural 20 (For example a master thief who has trained all their life to sneak being seen by an untrained commoner with 5 wisdom who is not paying close attention at all)

40: Communication Delay (http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/266/1/7/communication_delay___oots_by_1337salty-d6nlbwv.png)

Knowing their luck, Other Jon did, too.

39-41 killed me in planning; I kept cutting them off at different points. It's the main reason the update schedule failed; I make up my mind. At one point, I think they were all going to be one big comic, but it made the jumps too awkward. I'm not wild about the ending to this one; it's more plot-based than humor based, and I don't know if I can pull that off yet.

Oh, and Simon's Goblin incompetence is a joke he's sure to bitterly give a fake chuckle at. It works on another level, though; I like the idea of making fun of sorcerers for being unintelligent. A wizard would get a bunch of bonus languages from his intelligence score, but Simon can't even get one right. I might expand on that sometime in the future.

Oh, that's Jon's sword! Sorry if I didn't make it clear; he gives it back off-panel. I'm not too proud of the art there; if I was going to fix art on old comics, I'd definitely make it more clear that it's among Jon's possessions.

To me, it's very situational. Unless it's so outlandish that it's obvious a player's trying to take advantage of the system, I like that outside chance that something ridiculous could happen. It's dependent on the tone, though; in a fantasy game, some miraculous mishap/success seems fun and exciting, but it wouldn't be fitting in a gritty, modern game. One in twenty is a bit frequent for some of the more ridiculous happenings, but they come up so rarely I haven't had to worry about it.

Sorry about taking so long to respond; I feel guilty talking about the comic when I'm behind on updates.
