Because that plot point was already used here. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0360.html)

O-Chul is absolutely safe.

You say that like this comic has never repeated a joke.

It only repeated RECURRING jokes. Point to ONE instance where a non-recurring joke was used twice, this far apart.

Right (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0100.html) here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0600.html).

Hell, the reuse of the joke is even acknowledged by the characters.

It's so hard to tell whether things that I really should be able to say immediately are very much jokes are actually jokes.

Alas for the Internet.

Well, the joke in the second comic wasn't really the "something special for XXX strip" it was the comment that roy made about it already being done

But that's a running gag. And always has been.

If that joke were to repeat, now, it would - by definition! - become a recurring joke. Because it would have recurred.

But he's not going to do that to O-Chul.

The Chief was nothing but a gag character. O-Chul has gone through too much plot-wise to be a simple gag or to die in a simple gag.

Is "I'm too old for this" and dying just a recurring gag? No, it's a joke, but it also effects plot, and using a plot device of that kind twice cannot be done.

Case Closed.

I think the whole reason the strip title said that was because it's a fairly common trope--someone says "I'm getting too old for this" and something nasty promptly happens. The fact it's been used before in the run of the comic just reinforces the joke.

Don't worry... it's OKAY for O-Chul to say things that will summon Horrible Fates...

'cause it's the Horrible Fates that quiver in fear of O-Chul!

Am I being a pedantic smart-arse in pointing out that a joke told more than once is, by definition, recurring?

Probably...
