My company's doing a pirate themed special next month, and whoever has the best costume gets a prize.

I'm going to be hitting up some thrift stores. I've got a few ideas, but I'm mostly planning to just see what I can find and run with it.

Anybody got any ideas on anything that would be "extra piratey," something definitely worthy of first prize?

Get yourself a drum of limes and incessantly whinge about scurvy.

Dress a golf/go cart up as a pirate ship. Alternatively your car.

Listen to Alestorm (TRUE SCOTTISH PIRATE METAL!). A LOT.

Wear baggy pant things, a vest, but no shirt (to show all your glorious chest hair. ;))

Stop shaving and don't cut your hair (better yet, don't COMB your hair) if possible. Consider not showering for a few days. Wear an eyepatch and a bandanna. Say ARGH! all the time and only drink rum while at the party. Try to get a dueling pistol and cutlass. Not necessarily real ones, toy plastic ones should work quite well.

Get a 1400-1750 Spanish, English or French naval uniform! Also carry around a barrel of limes and complain of scurvy, as mentioned...

Or you could go modern-day. I think in this part of the world they tend to be Indonesian and rather scruffy-looking in dodgy old boats.

Incidentally, while I was searching for pirates online, I just found this:
Q: Why are pirates called pirates?
A: Because they arrrrrrrr.

When I was looking up photos of historical pirates, I didn't see a single parroted pirate :smalltongue:

Wombat-features: Do you think they'll be more impressed by historical accuracy (and/or creativity) or stereotypicality and flashiness?

Do you know how hard it is to keep such a bird on your shoulder for the 3-4 hours for such a painting? And you couldn't even glue it to your shoulder, or the cursed bird will use your shoulder as a restroom.

I would say flashiness & stereotyphicality!

Maybe you should carry a small chest with you... optically filled with dublone& loot but secretly the perfect bag for all those snacks for the next day!

Oh and don't forget the eyepatch. Or for twice the pirateness: TWO EYEPATCHES! Arrrrrh!

NBote: We need a piratesmiley!

I figuring either, I expect to see some accurate ones, and ones that are purely for the lulz.

This, plus a grappling hook and scarf mask. Just make sure you don't put it on and pull out the gun before you are inside.

Newport News (the clothing company) usually has a couple really sweet long coats, though they switch them around a lot--neither of the two I have, the velvet and the leather, are still available. Let's see...this (http://www.newport-news.com/shop/product_single.aspx?style_id=31637181) is the best pirate coat they have now, with this (http://www.newport-news.com/shop/product_single.aspx?style_id=35323181) also pretty cool. Yes, I know they're supposed to be women's clothing. So what. They're pirate coats.

I would vote going as a Somali pirate. Nobody else will have a Somali pirate.

*removed by request*

Edit: My personal favourite gotta be going as a digital pirate.

Or as a global warming pirate.

No, I meant I wasn't going to try to be topical or snarky with my costume, lest someone there be offended. Also I work in the gaming industry, so a digital pirate may be a bit in bad taste...

Puffy pants, a white, poofy shirt, boots, a piratey hat with a bandana underneath, eyepatch, and a parrot. Bring a little cannon and shoot people with candy or something.

It just occurred to me, I should put a Jolly Roger on my car. Now I need to come up with a design for that.
And I need a piratey name...

TWO EYEPATCHES!

Combine two eyepatchs with two peg legs and two hook hands. You'll be the life of the party!

No, that makes going as a digital pirate automatic win.

Sounds to me like someone doesn't own a macaw. :smalltongue:

Also I vote for the digital pirate. Carry around a stack of CDs with various game/movie labels written on them.

If you go armed, use a replica(or not) cutlass or dueling sabre, the common weapon of pirates of old. Not to mention a dueling pistol, or even a musket.

1) Buy a small rowing boat.
2) Add wheels, as you would with furniture or office chairs.
3) Get a crew, flags, et cetera.
4) Proclaim yourself Captain Blackstubble, Scourge of [insert name of town/local lake here].
5) ???
6) Profit.

Why do I get the feeling that, by "pirates" Mercury's company actually did mean digital pirates?

Imagine the looks on everyone's faces when Mercury's the only one wearing a "ARRR" pirate get up.

Well you could always pluck out an eye, hack off an arm, and slice off one of you legs. Food for thought.

Why Blackstubble?

Because it's funny sounding, and compare in scale: "Blackbeard, Scourge of the Seven Seas" scales down nicely to "Blackstubble, Scourge of Stafford Lake". Ya dig?

Because it's cool.
