View Full Version : The Thog Thread

This is my first OotS plot-speculation thread. For the record, I feel a little dirty inside.

I'm wondering about our good friend Thog, and his future with the Linear Guild. Particularly, wondering if he has one. See, he's been on the fence between an asset and a liability for a while (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0070.html) now, and recently fell headfirst down the liability side (what with helping Elan escape (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0387.html), and tackling Sabine (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0393.html) and all).

We know that Nale doesn't actually care about Thog's wellbeing (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0255.html), even being willing to sell him up the river for life just to get Elan. We also know that Nale's massive ego wouldn't allow him to keep someone around who's actually loyal (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0396.html) to his idiotic brother. So how long before we see Thog with a longsword through his chest? And what will happen to our lovable oaf when he realizes that Nale doesn't have his best interests at heart?

I miss Thog. Well, all the Linear Guild, really. How long has it been since we last saw them? It's gotta be well over a year now...

Thought about it. Decided grammar is more important to me than thoggishness.

I think Thog liked his time with Elan so much that he started crossdressing, took enunciation and ninja lessons, and changed his name to Therkla.

...What?

I just hope he returns sooner rather than later. He is by far the most entertaining character in team Linear.

:thog: Thog got to use a mop!

You say that like tackling Sabine wasn't exactly what Nale wanted him to do. I think that counts solidly as an asset from Nale's point of view.

Perhaps :thog: will replace :belkar: when :vaarsuvius: or :roy: or :randomperson: snuffs :belkar:. If Roy is specializing in spellcaster suppression, then they need someone with more raw power.

But seriously? I doubt anything is going to happen to Thog as long as he's off-screen.

Thog is to Roy as Nale is to Elan. The contrast is just too perfect to lose.

Remember, Nale is only marginally interested in putting together an optimised adventuring party. The "evil opposites" theme is more important to him than effectiveness. From that point of view, Thog is pretty much irreplaceable.

Really? There are a shortage of dim-witted 1/2 orc barbarians with a few fighter levels out there?

Well, we haven't seen any others.:smalltongue:

Fair point, I suppose. I guess I'm just trying to rationalise my gut feeling, which has been better summed up already: Thog is comedy gold.

The linear guild will keep Thog because Thog hits things hard. They probably would have held on to that druid too if they didn't have such different goals.

I am a fan of Thog, and I feel he shall return, but I am in no hurry to see him. There is too much going on with our heroes. When we see Thog and his jerk boss, hopefully Roy will be up and at-em!

Thog is gonna stay blindly loyal to Nale, probably leading to his being betrayed in some unthinkable way. I predict that eventually we get a tearjerker ending with thog jumping willingly at the snarl or some such thing.

there's a shortage of ones strong enough to hold their own against level 14 opposition. So far I haven't seen any evidence that high-level NPC's are common-remember the Azure city high-level prisoners- and from this I infer that the order is one of the most powerful fighting forces on the planet. This being the case, Nale might be able to find another half-orc barbarian or another high-level evildoer, but probably not someone who is both.

Thog wasn't in WaXPs, and he probably won't be in this book either.
Origin Thog says that in a middle page of Origin.
He appears several times in W&XP

Now Thog may yet appear in the upcoming features page, say about 665 or so.

I don't think Thog will knowingly initiate a tear-jerker moment. If he's involved in one, the pathos will come from his blissful disregard of the scene's impact.

That said, it'd be great to see the Guild again soon -- but we may have to be satisfied with anticipating a great big arc for them in the next book.
