So I was wondering what kind of vehicles people in the playground have as I was considering whether it was worth it to see if my parents will give me the old beat-up chevrolet 93-6(forgot what but in that range) pickup or if I should strike out on my own and see what kind of deathtrap I can acquire through my own economic clout.

So, I just went out and said I'm wheelless... What about y'all?

I drive a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. It's got four-wheel drive, a V8, a 22-gallon gas tank (I think - it's a BITCH to fill up when gas is $4-5 a gallon), and all that. It's a decent car, but has a lot of bugs (electrical shorts, bad shocks, etc.).

It's basically this one, but red with gold details, and no bug shields.

About 8 months ago I traded in my old red Nissan Micra for...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/macdonnell/New2.jpg

a Hyundai Coupe. Which I really like.

Edit: As a corrollary I'm going to add that once I got a cool car I realised that I didn't need a cool car to be cool, I was cool all along. These days I actually walk to work and leave the car on the drive. In fact they've started joking at work that I don't even have it any more. But getting your own way is about doing what you want to do, even if that doesn't match what what you're expected to want to do.

We have a '98 saturn that we will likely be replacing in three years, and an '07 honda civic. Both get great gas mileage. The honda has bigger blind spots, but not by much. The saturn has been very reliable, but I've been informed that it happened to be a good year. Very pleased with both, but we'll likely replace the saturn with a honda.

Me and Mrs B bought an '09 Suzuki Swift just over a month ago. Our first ever brand new car and it's a bit of step up from the knackered old Saxo we had previously. I'll put a few pictures up whenever I finally move them from my phone to the computer.

Those new Swifts look pretty nice.

I used to drive the old version of the Swift that was from '00, but then I realised that I wanted something a bit newer and a bit more comfortable and practical, so I bought a Vauxhall Meriva.
I got a bit of stick about it cause the Meriva is one of those cars that apparently falls into the 'family car' range, and since I'm single, people figured they'd comment about it. Comes in handy for nerd-herding at the UKitP meets, though.

This is pretty much it, only mine's black.

Last year I got a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. It originally had a different size motor, but the previous owner replaced it with a 3.5 v6 that only had 25000 miles on it.

Unfortunately, last week the transmission went bad. Don't know exactly what caused one of the parts inside the transmission to break apart, but it damaged the axles and cost nearly $1800 to fix. I got it back yesterday and it seems to be doing great again.

Here it is (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/Einhander/DSCN3311.jpg?t=1245421916)

From what I understand, with the bottoming out of GM and Chrysler, there are huge savings available on new and used vehices as dealerships are going out of business and have to move all stock ASAP.

Well I have an '05 Hyundia Sonata that I drive most of the time. I also have a '96 Chevy 2500HD long bed extended cab (not crew, but I don't think they make long bed crew cabs)... so about as long as a truck can get. I mostly got it to move (since it was going to cost me $1000+ to rent a moving van anyway) and I've only used it a few times in the last 2 years since I bought it. However I'm also getting a boat this weekend (from my grandparents) so I'm actually going to have a reason to use the truck sometimes now.

They're very purty for a small car to be sure, and there's a heck of a lot of foot room as well. The boot leaves rather a lot to be desired however. :smalltongue:

Ours is similar to this one, just a bit newer and turquoise:

I have a VW Bora, the most dull car in the world. It's a Golf with a boot basically.
http://www.havanacarhire.com/images/photos/vw-bora.jpg

Mine looks like this, but is full of sandwich wrappers, bits of paper, broken electrical equipment, LARP clothing, water pistols and bottles of god knows what. The outside is covered in a mixture of mud and dust, giving the metallic white/grey paint a nice, "covered in crap" look.

95 Honda Civic, red, 178k miles.* It's still a pretty good car, it gets 30+ mpg in town (even without any particular effort on my part), and of course it's long since been paid for.

Interestingly (to me, anyway), the Honda is almost as long as, and almost exactly equal in weight to, the 86 Dodge pickup which was its immediate predecessor in my use.**

The Mrs. and I have an '06 Mariner...well actually that's her car. We got the hybrid version, because I wanted a larger vehicle and she wanted the same gas mileage as her previous car - a '96 Geo Prism.

And because I'm an auto fanatic, I still own my first car. A '72 Opel Gt. I'm currently in the process of changing it from this orange color to black, but you'll get the general idea of what it looks like.

I'd recommend using the old truck. Just about everyone who goes out driving gets a knick/fender bender at some time in the early years, so take the old truck and worry a little less about a scratch in it when you drive it too close to the drive through wall at McD's. :smallwink:

Yay Lotus Europa! We used to have a yellow one, but it never worked that I can recall. We gave it to this guy who wanted to rebuild it as a "track day" car--i.e. a car that you would drive fast around a race track but not while racing people.

2005 Golf TDI for my car, 1998 Pontiac Sunfire for Alarra's car, and of course the 2006 Harley Davidson Sportster Custom (XL883C) for my motorcycle.

We're looking to upgrade Alarra's car in the near future and someday we'll get a touring bike to replace the cruiser I've got now. Right now we're looking at a Honda CR-V for her and ideally an Ultra Classic Electra Glide (http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/2009_Motorcycles/2009_Motorcycles.jsp?locale=en_US#/model/flhtcu) for the new bike. :smallcool:

Just out of interest is it common to state the date of manufacture of your car when asked what you drive?

Is that a local thing? I've never heard anyone do that before.

It's so you can picture which model it is, the Golf for example has been around for 25 years and has had 6 slightly different shapes.
I had an old mk 2 one years ago, it was the least reliable VW on the planet.

Currently I drive a 1986 Chevy S10 blazer. My father is a auto mechanic so we buy older slightly broken vechicles and fix them. This one was owned by a neighbor of my parents and their kid blew the engine, they then bought him a donor car with a 4.3L v6 to put in it and he either gave up or never even wanted to do that. So I bought everything for $800 and my dad and I did the swap, and rewaired the whole truck (the old engine was a 4 cylinder)

I also drive a 92 honda shadow (600cc) motorcycle. Little small for me but does fine at in town speeds.

My next car is going to be an 80's jeep eagle. Think a wagon style 4 door car but on a jeep's frame so it is higher off the ground and is a 4x4. I guy my father works with blew the head gasket does not want to worry about fixing it so he gave it to my father. I just need to break down and start working on it.

My primary mode of transportation in summer is my 1994 Giant Yukon (http://www.bikepedia.com/Images/image.aspx?w=400&h=400&filename=2000+Giant+Yukon+SE.jpg), named Blackwind. It's got road tires, a carry rack and a few other minor mods, and has served me very well lately. Blackwind's got a couple thousand miles on him, but shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

When I've gotta travel more than 5 miles, I usually take my cobalt blue 2001 Saturn SL2 (http://www.web2carz.com/images/nctd/01saturnsseries.jpg). I've tried to name her "Guardian Wind", but everyone else just calls her "Blue Thunder". So pedestrian! :smallmad:
She's got about 135,000 miles on her and is starting to reach the phase in her life where repairs are starting to become necessary. *sigh*

I have a '96 Dodge Intrepid...considering changing it out for a Jeep, preferably a Cherokee, but not quite sure yet. I need some kind of vehicle that's good for camping and yet a good daily driver as well.
It's been a most excellent car. It's only had one thing go wrong with it (the radiator, which isn't that surprising in Arizona during the summer) and even that it managed to do politely and conveniently. I'll kind of be sad to see it go.

Next:

Really Want:

Honda CB400 Super Four. (http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/1169159901/pictures/08CB400SF_WB.jpg) It's a nice bike. I love standard bikes, but it's next to impossible to find a mid-sized one in the US, and even this bike is Japan/Aus only. You can either go tiny like the Ninja 250, or friggin' huge 1600cc things. But since the CB400 is Japan-only, the duties on it would be more than the cost of the bike itself again, and thus totally not worth it. I'll probably end up with a Suzuki SV650 (http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2005models/2005-Suzuki-SV650.jpg), which is my second choice... but a distant second.

I share a '96 Pontiac Sunfire GT (no picture, but it's black) with my younger brother. And probably will for some time. At least he's not a bad driver.
It's got a variety of small things wrong with it, such as the display on the radio being dead and the various bits of interior molding being rather loose as well as the low speed on the fan not working, but there isn't anything majour wrong with it. I quite like it, really.

I have a 2000 Mazda Protege DX named Miranda. One of her previous owners replaced the tape deck with a CD player. Biggest nuisance (that's now in the past) is one of her tires kept getting low - I was having to reinflate the damn thing about every week. But that's not her fault. The weather seal on the back right door likes to come loose when the door is opened, and there's some minor upholstery damage, but you can't argue with 40-45 MPG. And she's a standard. :smallcool:

True, true. My Jeep, on average, gets like 19 MPG. it does considerably better on the highway (in the 20s-30s range), but in general it's a gas-guzzler. I just don't have the money to get anything better right now.
