In the Adventurer's Vault, there are items that take up the "Companion Slot." Are there any items like these specifically for familiars, or could you just use these instead?
I see a bit of abuse coming from the transposition harness, though...

No, since familiars were introduced way after AV, they weren't taking them into consideration whilst making the book. There will probably be afamiliar equipment in the AV 2, though.

I don't know of any specifically for familiars. I would probably allow them to wear Companion-slot items, though they wouldn't get any benefit unless the familiar was in active mode. Most of them wouldn't be particularly unbalancing, after all; familiars aren't combatants, after all, so the only ones that would really be useful would be the Guardian's Collar, Sigil of Companionship, and Transposition Harness.

That last wouldn't actually be unbalancing. A move-action daily item power, to teleport 10 or 20 squares, and requires you to have your familiar in active mode and out away from you? Yeah, that's not bad, but it's easy to counter and within the power range of other, similarly-leveled items.

Sigil of Companionship won't do squat because familiars can't flank

...Right. So, Guardian's Collar and Transposition Harness would be the only really useful ones, and I'm not sure if either of them is worth the money.

The beastmaster ranger build in the Martial Power supplement has a beast companion, and future classes and builds will also feature such companions.

Although the items in this section are tied to beast companions, all can be repuposed for other kinds of companions using the Transfer Enchantment ritual (see Appendix 1).

Obviously, the only companions at the time this was made were for beastmaster rangers, and so all the items are designed specifically with the capabilities of beast companions in mind. It does say that other classes will feature companions that can use companion-slot items, but we'll probably have to wait for AV2 to find out if familiars are on that list. They should all probably work for the shaman's spirit companion, at least.

Companion items were also designed to go on Mounts, like the ones in AV and the Monster Manual

Familiars are in the "companion" section of the DDI Character Builder, so...

...DDI states that they're not actually real creatures, and thus can't be equipped with Companion slot items. IIRC (it doesn't state so in DDI), a familiar's active state lacks any attacks or such of its own, and is essentially a minion with your defenses.

No, there is a different section for Mount items, although it does say that if you use your Companion as a Mount, it can wear either type of item.
