How has everyone else handled DnD combat on the forums? I'm just wondering what is the most sane way to do it, and I'm sure some people have found rather innovative ways to do it. Combat on PbP seems notoriously perilous for the survival of a game because it drags on.

The best way would seem to be to generate a map with coordinates in order to establish set distances and ranges for effects, spells, etc..

Use a co-ordinate grid, so that players can describe moves accurately.

Consider using group initiatives, rather than single initiatives, described in this thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110323). It speeds up combat a good bit.

Make sure the group isn't too big. A 4-person party can finish combats much faster than a 6-person one.

Do a bit of DM interpretation, and don't be afraid to fast-forward past sections where nothing significant is happening.

Very nifty. I'd thought about a first-come-first-served but this does factor in Initiative rather than simply response time (call it a 'reward' for the more avid posters).
