Boy, Xykon has a real boner for metero swarm, doesn't he?

V used disintegrate a lot, before that it was into explosive runes.

Is there any rule in D&D that lets a mage have a favored or preferred spell he's particularly good at? In Xykon's case it's have to be meteor swarm.

BTW, can someone make a ward or defense against just one type of spell that only works on one spell but gets a big bonus? Something like that would really honk xykon if it were set to meteor swarm.

I think they can enhance certain schools.
Meteor Swarm is kind of the sledgehammer of spells, so it perfectly fits Xykon.

Explosive Runes is still one of V's favorites I guess, its just not really useful in combat. He always liked to "blast first, ask questions never", I guess he just wasn't high enough for Disintegrate earlier.

By the way of feats: Spell Mastery allows a Wizard to be able to prepare certain spells without a spellbook. Signature Spell (from P.G. to Faerun, I think) allows a wizard to cast one of the spells chosen by Spell Mastery by converting other spells. (like a Cleric's cure, or a Druid's Summon spells)

Spell Immunity, and Greater Spell Immunity spells help with the second part, but they are limited to 4th and 8th level spells maximum, respectively.

Of course nothing prevents us from creating an 9th level version of it, or, an epic version.

Xykon also likes energy drain. Read SoD

Prestige Class Archmage (DMG).
For the class feature "Special: high arcana", select "spell like ability", and at the cost of a spell slot, you permanently prepare one spell as a spell like ability, usable 2/day

Don't forget Arcane Thesis. It increases your caster level when casting that spell, and reduces the metamagic level adjustment when applying metamagic to that spell. Of course, it's not in the SRD.

There is also Spell Thematics, which lets you pick a number of favorite spells and alter their appearence... yeah, pretty useless (well, exept for the part about qualifying you for the Halruaan Elder PrC).

Our AD&D DM made a house rule for specialised spells, extra die if it was magic missile, longer duration if it was hold person, etc. Could only have one spell and you could change it at level up.

As for my favourite spell I always used to like Chromatic Orb. Mainly because nobody really reads the spell description, it's 1st lvl, it must be useless.

So, middle of a fight, I'm a mid level caster 12th lvl, I cast chromatic orb, everyone else in my group looks at me, the match isn't going well, this one bad guy is beating the crap out of the paladin and fighter and I cast a 1st level spell at him, they question it, I stick with my decision.
It fires off, blink, save fail, the guy who was only hit once in 3 rounds dies on the spot. To the dismay of the DM.

They all started reading the whole spell descriptions after that gaming night :)
