EDIT: By the way, I also like the detail on the resurrection with the brain visible through the eye sockets, organs growing in, etc.

Hahaha, full frontal.

Finally, the Order is reunited.

"You're invisible!" - classic.

Good work on the rebuilding, brings to mind that picture in the 3.5 Player's Handbook about raise dead spells.

Also, with a naked, sarcastic Roy, further proof that Will Smith should play Roy in the OotS movie :)

But that's for another debate.

TO GIRARD'S GATE!

Edit: Also, an absolute pleasure to be able to load not just the strip, but the forum post, within 24 hours of the damn thing getting posted. Extra XP to the Giant for sorting out the new server :)

Just a question, has Roy taken any nonlethal damage from Celia's tackle-hug or from tripping over onto his face?

True, but we still saw a good bit of him in the afterlife, so you can't really count him as out of the comic for the duration.

I think its interesting that the unfreezing of V was not done before Roy was resurrected, especially because resurrecting a person is more difficult than unfreezing one.

Durkon was already in the process of casting the 10 minute long spell and mostly done when V was brought to him... If I was the cleric, I'd finish the rez instead of stopping to cast some other spell and then have to start from the beginning of the ten minute long spell.

With this, since the Order is not likely to have Roy's old clothes... art update?

Jaer_Galandol

Durkon would have had to stop casting the spell, though. I wonder if everyone's going to forget about him like last time.

At least they have a better reason this time, though. I freaking cheered out loud for this :) Good thing no one else was home or I would look like a weirdo.

He'd already started resurrecting Roy before V left; it takes ten minutes.

especially because resurrecting a person is more difficult than unfreezing one.

Unlikely, since the DC to unfreeze V is 11+Xykon's level - which Durkon or Elan may not be able to make at all, depending on what level it is - or it may take several tries, and they may not have enough Dispels prepared (Elan only gets one at his Bard level, and if he failed the check it might have been done off-panel). They might have to wait for it to wear off.

Elan would have to roll a 19 or 20 if Xykon is only level 21. We're not certain of Durkon's level, so he might have a slightly better chance.

Callista
2009-06-25, 05:50 PM
I think V is going to be pretty annoyed at being outdone by Roy and O-Chul. Either that, or the fuss at O-Chul's survival and Roy's resurrection is going to cover for the fact that V just made a pact with a bunch of fiends.

Whoohoo, Roy's back! Those panels of the Ressurection spell were kind of creepy, but detailed.

Also, is he really using V's cloak to cover himself up? What is this, some kind of karma for the wizard's alignment changing deeds?

By the way, hope they still have Roy's equipment. Either that or, Hinjo can deck him out in some spare equipment.

The body reconstruction process are incredible details for stick figure art!

And Elan's "You're invisible" is the funniest part of the strip. At least he's not grossed out by a little full frontal, contrarily to Belkar who is probably regretting having invested in the "Craft Disturbing Mental Images" feat right now. :smalltongue:

http://drawsketch.about.com/od/figuredrawing/ss/figurehead_3.htm

Yay! Roy is alive! :D Lovely detail on the regeneration, Giant. :) Well done.

Poor V is still being demeaned in increasingly small and hilarious ways. XD On another note, his robe is torn, the headband is gone and now the cloak, as well. And the hair is different as well. Probably means that he'll be getting a full costume change. Maybe.
I wouldn't worry about him getting an eyeful of the Trouser Titan, though... He is lying flat on his back with his eyes cast upwards into the sky, while Roy is standing several feet away. Not much to see there.

Oh, and Elan and Haley are holding hands in the penultimate panel. Cute. :)

Except that A.) the whole "nakedness" thing isn't as major as the poster thought, and B.) the "Please cast Blindness on me" joke didn't return (although the "invisibility" one did).

I think its interesting that the unfreezing of V was not done before Roy was resurrected, especially because resurrecting a person is more difficult than unfreezing one.

Stopping a spell in the middle of casting would have resulted in losing it (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/castingSpells.htm#spellFailure), and having to wait until tomorrow to cast it again. It would have been a bad decision to stop in the middle.

next strip is #666, can we take it as read that something very bad is going to happen (considering the significance of that particular number)- possibly involving the abyss.

Well, it may be the last page of the book, and be several days in coming, but in story terms, no. It may well have some ominous foreshadowing, but the book is ending, not starting, and no real dramatic events of any kind are going to happen, not unless the book is going to be 200 pages instead of the assumed 180+.

As for V's condition, all they have to do is either have Durkon cast an Owl's Wisdom on V and hope that the wisdom boost can allow V to make the will save, or wait. The spell will wear off soon. (Then again, the gang has to make the requisite spellcraft check to realize that V's condition is the result of a spell.) V should be getting up in a couple of minutes tops.

thanks for the welcome (and another person, too)... you're right, the color of the cloak V is wearing in the previous strip is the same color as what Roy is wearing as a towel. in all likelihood it is the same garment. i was so enthralled with the new page that i never went backwards.

but i don't see anyone take it off him/her/it/oprah, and given my propensity to disbelieve anything without evidence, and my background in laboratory science that causes me to constantly question results that i *know* to be true, i still say... prove it.

Elan's already blown his one fifth-level spell (assuming he only has GDM, not DM) for the day, and Durkon was busy until just now. That's assuming he had any Dispels prepared - and it may take multiple attempts, or it may not even be possible to beat the dispel DC (caster level + 11) at all, depending on Xykon's level. They may have to just wait for it to wear off.

Roy's back! Party down!

Seeing as next one's 666, it's most likely going to be V-centric, given the whole Soul Splice thing.

Now this may sound crazy, but you did all notice that Roy is using V's cloak as a towel, right? Now, that means V is slightly less clothed...
V's gender reveal in comic 666? :smalltongue:

Anyway, could've done without the disturbing regeneration of flesh, but awexome comic. I foresee a strip where every character gets a dramatic pose and one-liner for the group being reunited.

Or the Giant will make some joke about people expecting a big thing for number 666 like he did for 600.

Kaytara

Incidentally... Resurrection doesn't restore clothes to restored body parts.

This means yet another reason why the "alternate plan" of the Fiends wasn't viable.

It's not just the colour. See the runes lining the bottom of V's cloak? They are on the towel as well.
As for nobody taking the cloak off of V in-panel...

Q: Hey, in Panel X, the character is doing Y, but in Panel X+1, the character is doing Z. What happened?

A: Between panels, the character moved/cast a spell/had a spell cast on him/etc. There are limited panels in each strip, and I give priority to panels that tell jokes first, then advance the plot, and then, only if I have extra room, do I show transitional panels that are not strictly necessary. Use your imagination when it comes to exactly how it happened.

Well, I take the fact that we got strip 665 one day after 664 as more support for my theory that we had a long wait before that because Rich wanted to get right to 666 with minimal delay. Here's hoping we get something nice and juicy tomorrow.

(PS, am I the only one who saw Full Frontal Roy and was hoping for someone to mention the Trouser Titan? We did get a callback from Elan, just not that one.)

Question for those who have been on the forums for some time... Does the Giant usually take a break after finishing a book? The last page of War and XPs certainly seems to imply that...

And I think it's really quite likely that 666 will be the last page of the book. It's certainly possible. V owes the others some talking, which would be fairly slow-paced, and thus a fitting way to start a book. It would make sense to leave the resolution of this incident for V dangling to start the next book off with.

Can we assume that Roy has retained his memory of his time with the celestials, as indicated by him forgetting to walk? If so, will he have earned xp for the battles he fought there and retain the sword tricks that gramps taught him?

If not, he'll likely be the lowest level pc in the party.

This is awesome. Roy falling over totally cracked me up. I also liked the regrowing process and the invisibility reference.

Ever before 650 it looked improbable the resurrection would occur this close to 666. But with V's last actions, we kept approaching the number and I was wondering whether it would actually happen. In this case it seems 15 strips can happen in 10 minutes.

Personally I feel Roy has quite a few things to say so I doubt the next strip will be the last once. We are very close to the end of this book though. I am looking forward to see what the LG is up to. I have missed them.

222 strips on the dot!

And Roy suffers from a similar problem experienced with astronauts.

Too bad the death and the ressurection did not occur at 444 and 666. I would have considered it a coincedence from the Giant's part, but since I am obsessed with numbers...

First of all, to tell you that I am immensely fond of you all, and that two years is far too short a time to read this webcomic with such excellent and admirable posters. I don’t know half of you half as well as I would like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve…

Just kidding!! but now that Roy is officially back with the order, I will honor the agreement I have with Sexcleric and take a hiatus from reading oots for exactly 3 months. Other webcomics await discovery, and as a relatively new person when it comes to forums themselves, I think there are some many more threads worth some exploring too. Hoorah for the reference to Elan's Invisibility technique.

And yes, I JUST caught that Roy's using V's cloak as a towel. Poor V - s/he's lying on the ground for a perfectly clear view of Roy's naughty bits. And I just laughed at Roy falling on his face right after he gets back. :D

That'll do, Giant. That'll do.

I just want to say that I totally called it. Way back when, in a discussion thread about the ring of jumping (probably, like I remember the specifics,) I said that Roy's armor was in the bag of holding, so he'd be naked when he was raised. It was, and he is. Do I win a cookie or the internet or something?

Am I really the only one to see a reference to the movie "The Hollow Man" (with Kevin Bacon) in Roy's reconstruction sequence? Especially with the invisibility reference? Granted, it's the opposite from the movie (he gradually appears, rather than disappearing like Kevin Bacon's character) but it was the very first thing that popped into my mind. Maybe it's just me...

I think its interesting that the unfreezing of V was not done before Roy was resurrected, especially because resurrecting a person is more difficult than unfreezing one.

To be fair to Durkon, Resurrection takes some time and he was already in full swing when the others came running in to the scene with a paralysed Vaarsuvius. Durkon told them he couldn't interrupt the Resurrection, he'd get to healing V later. But yes, I noticed that too, that V was lying there all forelorn and still paralysed while the others were greeting Roy.

Durkon could have taken the standard action to unfreeze V, I'm sure Roy wouldnt have minded. But then, the dwarf and Roy are best buddies, while Durkon and V are merely.... colleagues? Co-workers? Not-quite-brothers-in-arms?

Roy died in #443, this is #665. 222 pages dead for 33.38% of the comic. Weird that a main character was dead for close to a third of the story (so far).

Death, much like becoming your own grandparent, is something that a well-rounded PC will find a minor inconvenience at best.

Enter Episode III: Return of the Fighter

Now for a more pressing question: Now that Roy has his "meat sword" back, where is Roy's family heirloom sword?? I have this horrible suspicion (I had it for some time now) that Haley and Celia left Roy's sword in Greysky City! :smalleek: And now that they're miles away and V can no longer teleport.... please don't tell me they have to go on another quest back to the city of thieves to retrieve the greenhilted sword because without it, Eugene's ghost cannot manifest to Roy! :smallsigh:

I mean, Haley remembers the starmetal quest and how important that sword is to Roy, right? Even if she doesn't know or remember about the spirit connection, she should remember that Roy had a family heirloom sword.... right? Right?? :smallfrown:

Let's examine the evidence, shall we?

1) The last time we saw Roy's sword in connection with Haley et al was on the cart they had used to transport Roy's corpse, outside the mansion of the fleshgolem-making necromancer.
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0578.html (Last appearance of Roy's greenhilted longsword on the cart)

2) Then, while running from the Thieves Guild, Haley and Celia go visit Blind Pete and leave the cart outside(!!) (in a city full of thieves!) while they hole up inside.
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0581.html (You cannot actually see the cart, but in panel 5 you can see the donkey that draws it, and neither Haley not Celia take the sword into the house with them. Stupid, stupid.)

3) Then, the next time we see Bozzok the Half-Ork, leader of the Thieves Guild, during the guild's attack on Blind Pete's house he is suddenly wielding a greenhilted longsword!!
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0609.html
I remember that back when that strip first appeared was the first time I was getting alarmed and going back through the archives for hints of the whereabouts of Roy's sword.

Bozzok didn't carry a longsword yet neither here
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0580.html
nor here
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0602.html
but by strip #609 he suddenly wields one.
It might be a coincidence, but other swords that Rich has drawn during the big guild fight all have brown or blue hilts, for examples see here:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0611.html and the following strips.

(For comparison purposes, here is the Greehilt family sword in the afterlife:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0600.html )

4) Bozzok has the sword here, in his second fight with Haley:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0618.html
and after she freezes him with an Icy Burst magic arrow, the greenhilted longsword is lying on the floor at Bozzok's and Belkar's feet, but the newly healed Belkar doesn't pick it up.
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0619.html
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0620.html

5) Celia brokers a peace with the guild in strip #620, and we see the women leaving the Thieves Guild in strip #621
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0621.html but neither of them is carrying the sword. :smallmad:
Not to mention Celia's actions mean they now owe the guild a brickload of money.
But apparently no-one bothers with the sword, because in strip #622 Haley is at the hairdresser having a haircut and Belkar is having a sandwich and some nookie.
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0622.html

6) Then Vaarsuvius ges his soul splices on, and teleports to Greysky City to find Haley, where Haley is busy retrieving Roy's bones from the Necromantic Golem Maker's mansion. We only see the aftermath of the retrieval when the Thieves Guild is carrying the Bonegolem outside.... where they meet Vaarsuvius standing in the street. No more signs of the cart. Notice that in the first panel, Bozzok can be see at the right edge of the panel, still carrying the greenhilted sword!
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0645.html (LAST appearance of the greenhilted sword so far!)

The following strip shows the big reunion of Haley and Elan, with Roy's ghost present.
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0646.html
Haley kills Crystal the assassin
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0648.html which is the last we see of the Thieves Guild. And then V teleports them all to the island where the rest of the fleet is waiting.

But when they materialize on the island, I see the bonegolem but I do not see Roy's sword anywhere! :smalleek:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0649.html
And ever since then, we haven't see the real sword (the afterlife version doesn't count). You'd think Roy would have noticed??

Of course, Haley may have put the sword in one of her countless bags of holding... but she didn't so previously, no, she transported it on the cart. And then Bozzok suddenly carried around a sword just like Roy's sword. And we haven't see Haley demand that sword back from Bozzok, or retrieve Roy's sword from the cart. Nothing. (And in comics, things neither seen onscreen nor referenced in dialogue have not actually happened.) On top of that, their leaving Greysky City was rather rushed. Might Haley simply have forgotten? Did no-one notice or ask her??

Roy will be royally pissed off if his sword is gone.

His armor, yes. I doubt it refers to the sword, for two important reasons:
1) As I already said in my above posting, Haley didn't put the sword into a bag before, instead she transported it on the cart alongside Roy's body the whole time.
2) And here is the reason why: You can't put sharp items inside a Bag of Holding (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#bagofHolding).

Bag of Holding

This appears to be a common cloth sack about 2 feet by 4 feet in size. The bag of holding opens into a nondimensional space: Its inside is larger than its outside dimensions. (...)
If the bag is overloaded, or if sharp objects pierce it (from inside or outside), the bag ruptures and is ruined. All contents are lost forever.

I believe that;s talking about if you pierce the bag. You can put a sharp object in a bag without piercing the sides. Many D&Ders have done so many many times.

Swords have scabbards for a reason.

I do hope you're right! Haley of all people should know what she can or can't stick into a bag of holding.

Only... Roy's sword hasn't been shown with a scabbard. It always was drawn as a naked blade as far as I can remember. And I find it suspicious that shortly after Haley and Celia leave the cart outside, hey presto, we see Bozzok suddenly running around and fighting with a big-ass greenhilted longsword. It could just be coincidence instead of a hint. I hope it is. I mean, Haley would have noticed if she'd seen that sword before, right?

We're talking a world where swords are commonplace...I find it unlikely that Roy's sword is the only one with a green hilt. Besides, if that WAS Roy's sword, Haley had plenty of opportunity to get it back once she'd frozen Bozzak; and Roy's sword is a greatsword, not a longsword, and therefore I don't think it can be used one-handed with a shield.

Or Durkon could just cast Remove Paralysis (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/removeParalysis.htm)

Afraid not - he's probably getting +8AC or so from his armor, and surely wouldn't be getting more than +3 from intelligence. That kind of trade only makes sense if you've also got high dexterity, which Roy doesn't seem to.

Besides, the duelist AC bonus can't exceed your level in that class, so it'd only be +1 to start with... suicidal for a meat shield like Roy...
