Does anyone know of any other sightings? They are evidently quite important, and any hints of their motives together could help us work out their purpose.

Not the world -- the planes. To upset the balance of power, wouldn't they have to somehow control the power of the snarl and use it whack a few more gods from the good side of the ledger?

From what I know of D&D's convoluted planar lore, they might well prefer to knock off some dieties from the Evil side of the Ledger so they could fill the vacancies and claim some open portfolios themselves.

For the record, the fiends also appeared in the dream sequence that got cut due to dangerously high levels of absinthe (it was implied that Belkar slipped Roy a mickey but forgot to make it poisonous). You can sort of see them if you:

1) Look at a copy of the dream sequence (a blank wall will do)

2) close one eye

3) Do a handstand for half an hour

4) Throw paint on the wall

and 5) Paste comic 632 onto the resultant mess. Comic 380 works too.
