Dogmantra's Random Banter

I think you know what this thread is for... But just in case you don't:
It's for random discussion of stuff you want to talk about but can't, won't or shouldn't make a new thread about. This includes almost everything. Everything but spam.

That being said, there are rules. Which are laid out below. If you are not familiar with them, please read them (basically, just be civil). If you are already familiar with them, fine, don't, it's your choice. (But you'll only have yourself to blame if you forget one of the rules and accidentally break it. )

Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

And here, linked for your convenience, are the previous incarnations of this thread.

As stated above, this thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. That is to say, this is a forum, not your IM client. People have set up an unofficial IRC chat thingy for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat. The latter is great... the former? Not so much.

So... have fun, I guess!

(Oh, and I told you that I'd get the new thread, my path to world domination is almost complete!)

My computer is humming rather ominously. I think it wants to kill me. That or it is slowly dying. Which could lead to the former being true.

I saw a strange creature today. It was smaller than a cat, had a sort of golden-brown fur (the texture was not like silk however) and loped along rather like a prey animal, as opposed to the lither movement of foxes or cats. I have absolutely no idea what it was.

That's okay, mad scientists (especially mad scientists who blow people up) are more than welcome here. :smalltongue:

@Kopaka: Maybe you could send it in a plastic tub? Perhaps a lidded bucket? :smalltongue:

I saw a strange creature today. It was smaller than a cat, had a sort of golden-brown fur (the texture was not like silk however) and loped along rather like a prey animal, as opposed to the lither movement of foxes or cats. I have absolutely no idea what it was.

Did it have a very bushy tail? Then it might be a squirrel. If it had a naked tail, it was probably just a big rat. Or it could be a veasel.

So I was at the checkout at the grocery store today and there was this old guy behind me. He made a comment about the weather to somebody else in the line and the person was like "Hmmm?" Clearly the old guy, who I will for some reason name Zeke, decided his first victim was hard of hearing and decided to bother someone else. Namely me.

I remember little about Zeke except that his shirt was red or pink, and that his grey hair was short. Oh yeah, and he was totally bats**t crazy.

I don't know what I was smoking today, but for some reason I tried swiping my debit card the wrong way at the debit machine. I was about to fly into a murderous rage when the cashier corrected me and I paid my bill.

So Zeke makes a joke about swiping the card right or something and I chuckle. Zeke takes this as an invitation to invade my personal space. You know that Seinfeld episode about "close talkers," the people who stand NOSE TO NOSE with you while they're speaking? Zeke's one of those guys.

You know what Zeke wants to talk about? Plastic cards.

You know what he heard? That ladies don't wear out plastic cards because they're carry them in their purses, whereas men carry them in their wallets and sit on them.

"Yeah, I never really thought about it. I confess it's never kept me up at n—"

"So I wonder if that's true of all plastic cards or just the olders ones. Because one time I couldn't use my social insurance card and my credit card and it was because I SAT ON THEM."

Uh-huh. So I'm trying to back away and Zeke keeps up with me. I sort of manage to manuever him so I'm no longer able to count his nose hairs. But Zeke keeps on walking with me, talking about the quality of plastic in ID cards and some other nonsense!

He's ahead of me and he's walking backwards and talking at the same time! He keeps up with me as I walk out of the store and into the parking lot!

Does Zeke have any groceries, you ask? No! He apparently just wanders up to people in grocery stores and starts badgering them for no reason! I guess it's his hobby or something!

So here I am debating whether or not I should walk back to my car and whether I can use the box of Pepsi cans I just purchased to club Zeke to death should I need a weapon. Fortunately, he says "Goodbye" and wanders off to join up with some other old guy. I wonder if this is Zeke's brother or friend and if he's ever been tempted to smother old Zeke in his sleep if he goes into another goddamn rant about plastic cards.

Anyways, that was the story of how I'm incredibly intolerant of the mentally ill.

I also got caught in the rain taking baseball pictures despite the fact there's been a two-month drought going on, and because of the drought they cancelled the fireworks display slated for Canada Day tomorrow. So I guess it hasn't been the greatest day.

Oh well. This picture of Kissing Prairie Dogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kissing_Prairie_dog.JPG) always cheers me up.

Whenever they play, they're supported by the Folksmen, who are them in different costumes, from a different (but almost as good) film: A Mighty Wind. They have been booed offstage as the Folksmen because the audience wanted Spinal Tap.

They wanted them to go backstage, change costumes, then come back onstage.

The most likely problem is that the new HDD needs to be formatted. In XP, you should be able to get to this by right-clicking on "My Computer" under the Start menu, selecting "Manage." That should bring up a new screen, with one of the options being "Storage," which in turn should lead to "Disk Management." If Disk Management shows the new HDD as an Unkown Partition, then the HDD needs to be formatted and partitioned.

Depending on the type of outbreak, one might be able to subsist on downed zombies.

Of course, if this is a rotted zombie/zombie infected with something that isn't sterilized under intense heat, this is a bad idea.

Best idea is to find a place with renewable food sources, like an indoor farm.

Well, the outbreaks you get are normally due either to a virus (many viruses can still survive extremely high temperatures, due to not technically being alive) or something arcane or divine in nature. In any of these situations eating them will be a pretty damn bad idea. As is eating rotting meat in general, if you were getting ideas.

The problem is other people are already going to be at Gander Mountain by the time you get there. Are you going to fight them off and claim the area as your own? What will you do for food?

Best option is to pick out a secure area where you can store food, then once the outbreak occurs, get there as fast as you can, sit up on the roof with a gas-powered generator powering a fridge so you can enjoy nice cold ones while popping zed heads.

Hope they do. As I said before, Shanghai has no animal shelters. We have an animal rescue group, but when I contacted them about Custard the kitten who-does-not-have-tear-ducts-but-still-manages-to-cry-scream-and-whimper-as-if-his-heart-was-breaking, they told me that they were having to euthanasize new-born kittens because they just didn't have the resources to deal with them. That's why I still have him - currently fussing and chewing on my finger because the expensive pet-feeding bottle I got him is obviously not good enough to nurse on.

For cat with fleas I highly recommend that 'spot on' liquid stuff you dab on their necks. Works a treat, but I don't know which brand name it'll be sold under in your region.

It's just like people that go see Micheal Bay movies, it's killing the genre."

Seriously. It's almost blasphemy. Which is, you know, kind of ironic given which movie I was watching.

Life of Brian is not blasphemous in the slightest. They even show JC to make it absolutely clear that they are not referring to him. The groups which thought it was blasphemous just had exceedingly poor comprehension skills. (Or couldn't take a joke.)

Anyway, do you remember my rant about Chinese bureaucracy and my husband's attempts to renew a passport? Well the passport office called him today. Apparently their facial recognition machine wasn't working the day he went in. Could he please come back? Bear in mind that this office is still 1500km away from where we live, and, due to poor flight connections, takes a minimum of 36 hours to get to a cost of about twice a normal Chinese manual labourer's monthly wage.

DH is not happy. Really, really, not happy. The awful thing is, we can't annoy these people, because they're the ones who get to decide whether he receives a passport or not, and if he doesn't our marriage is going to face a lot of problems down the line.

@ Coidz: I can't quite tell whether you're just talking about the kitten post, or whether you're referring to the Chinese bureaucracy one as well...

Anyway, fleas are horrible. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Do not feel bad if they freak you out, because they are freaky. And icky. (I prefer to kill them with the judicious application of chemicals, but if all else fails, they can be squashed between one's thumb nails. It makes a satifying 'squick' noise. This is a tip I learnt from John Donne, so metaphysical poets have their uses - yay!) Do not feel bad about nuking the fleas.

Raising Custard is not much of a hardship. I've cared for a lot of orphaned kittens in my time - it's just that this one is the youngest I've taken on, and it can sometimes be a bit heart-breaking to know that all he wants and needs is a proper mama-cat when I'm not a feline. But, he's growing and developing, and even starting to approximate purring noises. And a soft, tiny, sleepy kitten is pure bliss.

On the Chinese bureaucracy front: DH has spent the day chasing his 'guanxi' (directly translates to 'relationships' in English, but the Chinese word means much, much, more than that). He's managed to talk to his cousin's classmate's colleague who out-ranks the difficult bureaucrats and should be able to order them to hand over a new passport with minimal fuss. We're currently holding our breath and hoping it works...

To the cat-servant who was expressing woe over the cat-allergic feline: This was only discovered when the household, and its cats, were split. The delicate little flower has a household to herself now, and that's the way she prefers it.

(New fluffy cat, raised among dozens of pets, approaches delicate little flower, who is lolling about and looking cute)
Fluffy lovecat: Hi! Play!
Delicate little flower: Hissssss!
("Awww, isn't that cute! She finally learned her native language!" --cat-servant witness)
Fluffy lovecat: . . . ?
Fluffy lovecat: Play!
(Misplaced barn cat enters, studies scene)
Misplaced barn cat: Oh fer crissakes, not another one.
Fluffy lovecat: New cat! Play!
Misplaced barn cat: . . .See you next week. Maybe. (exits)

So....kay. That was a great movie and all, but now I'm reading all of the knee-jerk monkey-jabber posts on the Escapist Wastelands Forums in the voice of Eric Idle. It's kinda surreal.

I mean, one of the Grandfathers of modern absurd commentary simply shouldn't be associated with the sentiment, "Casual gamers need to stick to playing bejeweled on their iphone." or "I think its more the gaming industry has turned into a shambling corporate monster that spews out shiny looking games with no substance because kids today all have add and have no idea of how awesome games could be if they kept their standards a bit higher. It's just like people that go see Micheal Bay movies, it's killing the genre."

Seriously. It's almost blasphemy. Which is, you know, kind of ironic given which movie I was watching.

Indeed, the number of self-righteous, elitist <Censored> on the Escapist forums is kind ofoverwhleming.
Probably not saying much about myself since I am registered on the Escapist forums and stuff, but I try to not be self-righteous.

That does work. The prevailing theory about Fluffy lovecat is that, having been raised among cats and dogs both, he hasn't quite wrapped his head around the idea that they operate differently, and that his personal behavior is on the 'dog' end of the spectrum. (This cat plays with rabbits, even. He lets them chase him around.)

Also, I suspect you missed a final "Play!" as dog dashes after retreating and clearly 'playing' adorable kitty. . .

Ah, yes. Here's the ending:

Golden Retriever: Play!
Adorable Kitty: *jumps up somewhere high*
Golden Retriever: Awww, but. . . Play! *watches for a second, and then gets chewed out by me for chasing Adorable Kitty*

Life of Brian is not blasphemous in the slightest. They even show JC to make it absolutely clear that they are not referring to him. The groups which thought it was blasphemous just had exceedingly poor comprehension skills. (Or couldn't take a joke.)

Oh, I fully agree. After watching the movie, I would have wondered what the fuss was, if I didn't know what kind of people would take it that way.

We go now to the Great kingdom of Makenthysoop, the State of Asigo, that city Alon'g, where the King Resides.
He is a sickly man, with no heir to the throne, and has issued a challange far across the land, for courageous, wise souls to come to him, so he may appoint and heir from amongst the best of them all.

will you play Raquetball instead?

Sons of the gods, today we shall die. Open Valhalla's door, let the battle begin, with swords in the wind, hail Gods of War!

Onward into the heart of the battle
Fought the sons of Odin
Outnumbered many times
Still - they fought on
Blood poured forth from their wounds
Deep into the earth
Vultures waited for the broken shells
That once were bodies
Thus Odin alone would choose the day
They would enter Valhalla
And in their hour of need
He sent forth onto them The Berserker Rage
Now gods embed
They grows up from the ground
Screaming like wild animals
Such is the gift of absolute power
No blade or weapon would hurt them
They killed them and horses alike
And all who stood before them died that day
Hail Gods Of War

So I have returned from a trip to Poland where I visited a lot of family. Overall, it was not a good trip. I was totally sleep deprived due to the fact that I had to sleep in the same room as my dad, and he snores so loud it's like having an engine next to your head that is revved every 6 seconds. The fact that I had to sleep on a cot that creaked and groaned in despair if I so much as blinked didn't help. It was also really hot, and none of my relatives have yet realized that air conditioning is GOOD. Then, I had to spend half the time listening to my racist grandfather rant about how Jews are secretly taking over Poland. A rather difficult task for a group of people that are less than one percent of the population. The rest of the time was spent receiving criticism from my dad about what a terrible and useless son I am. Somehow I get the feeling that I may be evicted from his home, and since my mom also kicked me out, I could end up homeless.

It's good to be back home.
