Or is it that life mimics art?

Either way, I think I found out why V. doesn't get gender role jokes. His parents were like these Swedish (http://news.aol.com/article/parents-keep-childs-sex-a-secret/548933) parents.

The parents, both 24 years old, said they never use personal pronouns when referring to the child. They just say "Pop."
The tot wears everything from dresses to pants, and Pop is usually the one who decides what to wear on any given morning. Pop's hairstyle is also changed on a regular basis, so it doesn’t provide any clues.

Doesn't that sound like Varsuvius? I think this sheds light into V's early childhood and how V. doesn't get gender jokes.

Origin:
After blotting out the "gender" box on his application form, V tells Roy to fill it in if he considers it so important, then appears visibly annoyed when Roy is unable to.

And in the comic, he turns invisible to pee expressly to irritate Belkar. So V does have a gender identity, he just considers it unimportant.
