I whipped this up for a D&D game I have yet to run, and I thought I should ask the professionals for advice. Thoughts?

And the instructions I made for it:

1. Copy image onto word processor of your choice.
2. Scale the image so that the circle on the far right is slightly less than 1 inch.
3. Print
4. Cut out images: It's okay to leave some white space around the mini, but make the base exact, with nothing around the edges.
5. Fold the half-circle bases so that they are at a 90 degree angle to the character.
6. Glue the two sides of the character together, and cut off a part of the surrounding white space, if any, so it is even.
7. Glue the circle to the bottom of the mini.

I haven't had a chance to try to make it (stupid printer), but I would love to hear/see how it turns out. I was inspired by Rich's comment in one of the commentaries about how he used this style for miniatures for his games.

That's a really cool idea. Unfortunately, my printer's not working as well, so I can't try it out. Would it be okay to edit the image to insert any character?

I love your idea. It's easy and looks pretty well.

And OotS style is easy to draw, so it's a good option if you want customized miniatures that look cool. And if a player cannot make it, the one who knows how to can do it easily for him.

That's an excellent idea for whipping up a number of minis fast.

From the title, I originally thought someone else was going to do something like this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98831).

Sure! In fact, here's the template!

It isn't that difficult to create, however. It's just a circle and two half circles.

Thanks! When I first saw that thread, I thought you were going to do something like this. I have to applaud you efforts, though. That is much more work than I would be willing to spend on that. I would probably get lazy and leave it half-finished.

Looks like a good idea.

However, it may be better if he feet are actually over the grey semi-circle, so they bend flat when it's assembled. Also, you could have one side be the back of the character.

Interesting ideas. I think I'm going to keep the feet where they are, just because I would prefer the entire character to be shown on one side. I might try the back idea, however. Who knows. I may experiment with both. Feel free to try whatever you want, however. I would love to see anything you make.

Thanks! I actually just got a working printer and was able to test them out. Personally, I think they look pretty good. I may want to increase the size of the original image to reduce blurriness, though. I have reached one small hiccup, though. I've been trying to decide if it is really worth it to trim as much white space off as possible. So, anyone who has tried it, what are your thoughts? Should the minis be trimmed to the edge, or does a thin outline of white space look fine? Also, if anyone has made any of their own, feel free to post them here. I would love to see them.

This would be a great project to make inexpensive minis. I played around with the concept and came up with this "prototype". This example is 90dpi but I reckon 150dpi pictures would be best for printing.

Make the bottom piece white to save some colour. Doing a detailed outline like this is probably a stupid idea. Too much unnecessary fine cutting work required for it.

This one would probably be the best. It would also be less prone to wear and tear.

A bit large in my opinion, but it's good enough.

I increased the size mainly because it looks slightly better after adjusting it in Word. The last one was too small, this is too large, but eventually I'll get it right. Thanks!

Well, usually the base is an inch or so.
I'll see if I can dig up any of my old mini's...

If it hasn't already been mentioned, Oots's art form was reborn in this manner, according to Rich's opening speach in Dungeon Crawlin' Fools. The original Oots style drawings of Rich were his "Mr. Demon" comics as a young kid, which, according to him, consisted of a "stick figure fiend walking from point a to point b, roasting other fantasy creatures that got in his way" (admittedly, I'm paraphrasing

Yeah, Rich's miniature rebirth inspired me.

Are they anywhere on the web?

Are they anywhere on the web?

I doubt it. He made them when he was 12, and the plot was basically

Mr. Demon mostly walked from point A to point B while various fantasy monsters tried to get in his way, at which point he would breathe fire on them, they would die, and he would keep on walking.

Nothing that exciting, although I wouldn't mind at least seeing a recreation of what the first character to be made in OotS-Style looked like.

That's pretty much why I'd like to see them.
