View Full Version : Name that Tavern!

So, for the 78% of people who begin their campaigns in a tavern (and for the other 22% who presumably encounter a tavern at some point)- what are your favorite tavern names for D&D?

Mine so far-
The Bloated Gargoyle

The Drunken Weasel

Possum's Last Dance

I've used a lot, but I can't come close to remembering them all. There was...

The Lion & Lantern

The Tipped Scales (the dive bar in a town run by the priesthood of a god of justice)

The Leapin' Lizardman

The Wobblin' Goblin

Smoldering Corpse.

The Drunken Morkoth, from Shackled City.

Mainly because one of the players misheard it.

"Did you just say, the Drunken Moorcock?"

Dragon's Landing.

Only it wasn't a tavern. It was a teahouse.

I've always been partial to the Tipsy Harper.
Or the Ale Pit, for those seedy Dwarven bars where you don't care about anything but the quantity of the alcohol and the available number of people to fight.

The Willing Goblin.

I think "Det mugsorte Ostebord" was one of the most memorable, not to mention deadly places I've set foot as an adventurer. It translates roughly into "The black-moldy cheese platter"... I guess it's one of those "you should have been there" things...

The Plotting Hook.
The Distressing Damsel
The Smashing Jugs

However, symbolic names are only really important in a none-literate culture. In D&D, almost everyone can read. Oddly enough considering I don't hear tell of many printing presses.

The Hanging Madman (name deriving from owner's old robbing technique - hard to explain...);

The Firebird (name deriving from the sighting of a phoenix by the owner);

The Stinking Fish (lowly tavern near the docks...)

The Green Bull (no particular reason, apart from oddity...)

The Thirsty Adventurer (Adventurer Guild's personal tavern).

arguskos
2009-07-02, 03:26 PM
The Minotaur and the Scroll (run by a bookish minotaur)

The Artistic Giant (run by a half-giant who had this thing for painting, and was pretty good at it)

The Drunken Fiends (named after three bearded devils that were ALWAYS there and ALWAYS drunk as hell)

Those three are pretty much my favorites.

The Plotting Hook.

Lol, I've used that one before. My players never got the joke.

Hmm....I'd have to say the most recurring inn in my campaigns is the Dragonfang Tavern. However, I've also had critical success with the Slam-Bam, Thank-The-Ma'am Single Night Inn. Which doubled as a brothel, hence the name.

I'm guessing the head of a common bull, which the innkeeper assures us is really a minotaur's head. As if common bumpkins like us could tell the difference.

I try to use the rule that tavern names are designed for the illiterate, so it has to be something visual, like the Green Dragon, the Sly Wink, the Tipping Tankard, or Hooters.

Non-visual ones, like the Artful Dodger, the Last Word, or the Unbearable Lightness of Being, would be discarded.

<. .> A couple I've used:

Dancing Goat

Traipsing Halfling

Flung Mug

Marl's

This Space Left Blank

Hurled Gnome

Goldvein's

Flying Boot

Dirty Boot

Worn Boot (Okay yeah I admit, I had a problem with Boot themed pubs)

The Bar with No Sign (It didn't actually have a name, it was just a dingy hole in the wall place)

The Upturned Table (It didn't have a sign per-se; it had been stolen and used as a weapon too many times - but there was almost always a table or a chair or something similar flung through the window by noon, so it worked out.)

-----

And the one I plan to use in my next lighthearted adventure (in honor of my favorite Goblin from the webcomic Goblins...)

Ah, taverns. The very heart and soul of a campaign. Or, in more realistic cases, the bowels.

Some of my favourites included

The Oak and Laurel, a quiet and upscale speakeasy frequented by the military enlisted men in a Romanesque campaign.
The Hole in the Wall, whose entrance was quite literally a hole in the city wall.
Home By Nine, which was about the sleaziest possible pub in the Redmond Barrens. Ah, Shadowrun, how I miss thee... Our NPC rigger got arrested for soliciting a minor and consensual sodomy three times there. Unrelated crimes, so don't get weird.
The Black Lung. Coal town. Pretty self-explanatory.
Tome and Tankard, which was the campus pub at the Wizard's Academy. Now THOSE were fun brawls!
The Rolling Melee, which was like a little slice of Asgard. Quaffing and quarrelling all day and all night.

That's about all I can recall offhand.

The Filthy Whore. No wait, that was a ship's name.

OK this has to be a coincidence. Friends of mine had characters that used a ship called the Filthy Whore in manny a game. Most notably spell jammer.

Ive made up afew tavern/inn names over the past few months wish I could remmeber them all. Here are a few over the years.

Dragon theme:
The Black Dragon Inn.

Named so after my very first character killed his first dragon. Also obtaned an Inn in the same adventure. The head of a black dragon with one eye replaced by a large emerald sits above the bar. This became his base of operation for 12 years. Every time he killed a dragon he opened a new inn in another city.

The Dragon's Skull, and the Emerald Dragon are two more that I can remember. Coincidentaly there was a reorganization of the thieves guild in thoughs cities.

Friend of mine had a dagger theme. New city new dagger.

The hidden blade, and The Flying Jimba are to I remember.

Afew random names ive used.

Fox and Hound

Trudge Inn

Shenanigans

Damn Im having a memory block now. Ah well. There are alot of good names being posted Im sorry to say that Im going to steal some of them.

The Drunk Skunk was always one of my favorites. They had a mascot skunk who was enchanted to be perpetually intoxicated.

The current one for my campaign is the Ridiculous Ronny Rimplefelt's Reasonably Rated Ruckus Room.

Mr. Rimplefelt feels ruckus to be a necessary part of life and is proud to provide a room for it...at a reasonable rate!

From my world of Vethedar...

Tranquility Inn - named for the magical aura of calmness that surrounds it.
Iron Post - Generic filthy "no questions asked" dockbound tavern.
Mossburrow Inn - in the Elven city, known world-round for its moss-covered floor (more comfortable than a carpet!)
Up With The Dawn - also in the Docks, it's more a morning eatery... with a waitress named Dawn. :smallwink:

From my buddy's world..

Smoking Kobold Boots
Bending Purple Pot - Sells its namesake drink, which is a magical alcohol of sorts. Bad, BAD hallucinations.

My taverns are usually drawn from whatever town I live in and as a result, Edinburgh is a place that lends a huge number of pub names.
The Last Drop (with a gallows on the sign, usually where the lawful types hang out)
Biddy Mulligans (Usually run by a mad old lady and with a poor abused "bardeoke" band in the corner.)
The Black Bull is where all my adventures tend to start as it's also where we start our pub crawls.
Frankensteins (Mad Scientist themed place)
Three Sisters (the local bar and whorehouse in my campaigns)
The Pear Tree, home of the intellectuals and wizards usually as it's our Pub Quiz pub.
Grassmarket Bar (merchants tavern).
Oh and the Festival Inn. Now sadly closed.
Other's I've cribbed from various souces. The Whore and Trumpet from Bill Bailey's "Pubb Gagge", The Slaughtered Lamb for the warlocks to hide out in.
Oh and the hopefully upcoming pub of the Gear and Sprocket. A pub in a Warforged settlement where they go for a quart of oil after a hard day. The wizard who built the town is a little eccentric so the Warforged are also a little weird for their kind.
And the fact that I'll try and make it impossible for the PC's to get a beer there.
"A pint of...Field's Best please".
*large mug of thick black crude*
"How about a glass of Elf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elf_Aquitaine)? That's gotta be elven wine right?"
"Ok, how about just a glass of water?"
*strange look*

Maybe I'll let them buy Biofuel as well. I.E. fuel for the living :p

My last campaign featured the Dancing Badger as the PCs favorite watering hole, although they were eventually forced to relocate to the Emperor's Peace once they started meeting with nobility (got to keep up appearances, you know).

My current campaign features the Quenched Steel Inn, run by your obligatory retired 12th level fighter. The centerpiece of the common room is his old greatsword, dunked blade first into a clear vat of oil behind the bar so that only the hilt protrudes.
