bonfires

the woodsmoke clung to our clothes
gave us away but we didn't care
as we danced around that midsummer blaze:
i remember those, those happier days
when we were not so self-aware
but held our illicit revels under the stars

how readily the smuggled cider flowed
sparkling like champagne in plastic cups
the hesitant first taste you can't forget
nervous drags of dogeared cigarettes
marvelling as our laughing fire erupts
glowing cinders float amongst the stars

and maybe it was then, when we were close
whilst shadows and firelight courted on our faces
we wondered if we'd ever find ourselves in love
like the older boys and smiling girls spoke of
replace the midsummer blaze with our embraces
kiss softly, underneath the shining stars

If anyone else has anything... that'd be nice. Critique is welcome too, if you like that sort of thing.
