Is there anyway to get a spellshard that holds mroe than 20 pages worth of spells?
Because that isn't many at all. :(

Also is there any reason why additional magic effects couldn't be placed on the gem?

Could the Gem be mounted in an already magic staff or in a staff that is then made magical?

The cost per 'page' of a spellshard is equivalent to that of an actual spellbook (100 pages = 15gp). That said, it is far better value for money being: waterproof, fireproof, more compact, lighter, harder to damage and more likely to survive the damage (hardness 8, 20hp/inch and "about the size of a human fist" so you're looking at ~60hp based on the data here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HandAnthropometry.JPG) (wikipedia.org)).

There's no reason why you couldn't get your DM to okay a larger capacity version but, given the advantages, I doubt they'd allow it without charging a small fortune for the privilege.

As for additional effects or mounting it in existing equipment, there's no reason not to allow it under the regular magic item creation rules but you'll probably be hit by the price increases for multiple different abilities (+50% of lower cost item as you layer each additional ability on) and no space limitation (double the final cost unless you're talking potion/scroll/wand/staff-like ability).

Aureon's Spellshard (6250 gp, ECS 265).
500 pages, no scribing cost.

I'd completely forgotten about that: It's the shard equivalent of the blessed book (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/WondrousItems.htm#blessedBook) but half the weight, capacity and price.

50,000gp worth of scribing for a mere 6,250gp plus all the benefits over a regular spellbook? I'll take a dozen... :smalltongue:

You are awesome. :D
Now to purchase one when my WBL becomes high enough.

I want to make a magical spellbook library similar to the one from "the Time Machine" movie (based on the H.G. Wells novel) and have a staff that can hold one of these gems in a "slot" to carry it about.
http://thecia.com.au/reviews/t/images/time-machine-1.jpg

So the library stores a bajillion spells and I can go and simply swap about spells magically, tailoring my spellshard to whatever spells I like.
I'd only need about 100-200 pages is all though. But Aureon's Spellshard would work great both for the staff and library (might need a couple for the library).

On a side note. How many pages worth of spells are there in DnD?
Anyone ever counted it?

Core only from the wiz/sorc list

58 0th and 1st level, 58 pages
50 2nd level spells, 100 pages
42 3rd level spells, 126 pages
41 4th level spells, 164 pages
44 5th level spells, 220 pages
43 6th level spells, 258 pages
35 7th level spells, 245 pages
35 8th level spells, 280 pages
24 9th level spells, 216 pages

= 1667 pages worth of spells

Just under 2 full BBBs to learn every spell in the PHB.

Outside of core, quadruple that, at least.

Hrmm.. that is awesome.
I'm going to attempt to learn every spell as an arcane spell from all official WotC books, Green Ronin books and Mongoose Books.

So yeah,, quadruple it at least. :P
Minimum.

This is why I need spellshards. lol.

From all those books? I'd make that 10,000 pages worth, most likely. That's... a lot of books.

So, you'll need 20 spellshards. :smalltongue:

Outside of core, quadruple that, at least.

There are 2,856 official 3e spells, so assuming all of them are 9th level spells (which they obviously aren't) you'd need 25,704 pages and thus 26 BBBs for all of them. Assuming a more-probable average level of 4, you'd need 12.

I'll creature a special kind of construct contained in a sheet of glass and powered by a matrix containing about 20 or more of the souped up Spellshards then.

Maybe bind a spirit into the thing. Vuala.. one talknig spell library who can help me with spell research and provide the ultimate knowledge Arcana!!
:D

Now to get the spells in game. rofl.

Scribe Scroll, Chameleon 2 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20041210b), use the floating feat for Extra Spell, done. It's the traditional method, anyway.

Escept I need to wait until level 6 to take it, need to be human, need to have able learner. A Wizard can get any arcane spell easily anyway. It is getting the divine ones that is harder without an Archivist dip and some serious downtime.

Either get a psiforged and stick those spellshards into his skln/body for a lorekeeper, or get the craft construct feat/someone with the feat to make a custom construct that incorporates the spellshards into its internal workings and acts like a librarian.

Except I want it to be a hollogram. Though that could work well too. :)

Well, to be a hologram you could use ghostform to become incorporeal and illusions to give you that scratchy projector-is-running-out-of-power look. Which you could prepare from your nifty spellshard library.

I was thinking just an astral construct bound within a sheet of glass or crystal. :)

But I really like the illusion spells idea. :D
