So... what about cloaks and capes and other such garments?

I've never warn them, accept maybe as a very small child and during a "Harry Potter"-week at my high school, yet I find some of them quite appealing. What is your experience with them? Do you prefer superman/superhero capes, dracula cloaks or more dark age/fantasy cloaks, hooded or not?:smallamused:

I'd love to weak a cloak of some sort, but not only would people think I'm crazy but also I'd boil in it in summer. Still, as soon as it gets colder and I start living sort of on my own, I'm buying a trenchcoat. Mark my words.

I've always wanted a cloak/cape. Or two. Or three.

Let's see...

I'd like a big, bulky, everything-concealing cloak that puts my face in shadow for when I want to sit mysteriously in the corner of a tavern, waiting for the chosen ones to show up so I can recruit them to battle against injustice. Probably brown.

A light mantle that has a tendency to be caught by dramatic wind, and which I can gesture with in a theatrical manner. Probably black. Maybe purple.

A flat-out superhero cape, just for kicks. Probably blue. Maybe red.

Oh, wait, and I'd want something in between one and two, probably. Hooded, but lighter than the mysterious-stranger cloak. Black, scarlet, or purple with some sort of decorative border.

Anyway, I personally have none of the above, but there is a girl who goes to my college who near-constantly wears a black cape. To the point where most people call her "cape girl." I was told her real name once, but I've completely forgotten it.

A bit odd, that girl, but I've got to admire the cape.

Come to think of it, there were a couple girls at the previous college I attended, before the transfer, who occasionally wore capes. Not often, but every now and then. Hm.

Thrift stores when it's hot.

I got myself a nice trenchcoat for $20. No lie.

Heh. My favored article of external clothing is a longcoat of some sort. :smallwink:

...Also, growing up, I would frequently either substitute one of my linen sheets as a sort of drape/wrap rather than wear a shirt due to the heat/humidity and comfort issues around the house.

In fact, I still do, sometimes. Never worn an actual cape or cloak though, I mean to get one eventually though.

I have a green LotR-style cloak, and a black crushed-velvet cape/almost cloak. The former I borrowed so frequently from an ex-girlfriend that she eventually just left it here because I wore it and she didn't. The black one I actually have no idea where it came from. I was looking through my closet one day and found it but I'm not at all clear on how it got there in the first place. :smalleek:

I've often remarked that I'd wear a cloak if it were socially acceptable. They're simply so much more comfortable than coats or jackets IMO.

Capes, on the other hand, are just silly.

I do have an actual cape, which I wear pretty often. Although now it's too hot. It's black and blue.

Hey, that's a good idea. Or it would be if I could buy a trenchcoat where I live without having to go to a much bigger city.

Well, how big IS your city? I live in a small city by most standards (although it is something like the 50th biggest in Canada). It doesn't even break 100k people and is still quite far from it.

Ahhhh, cloaks. Such a versatile piece of clothing; I've no idea how they ever fell out of style.

And since trench coats came up:

You do not want to wear a heavy cloak when it's even remotely warm out, especially one that secures around the neck instead of around the shoulders; you will stifle. In winter, though, they're great.

What can I say? I don't like people taking pics of me.

But in the end, I just love my cloak.

It's light and reasonably thin, good for spring and summer.

i have a light cloak i wear in light rain. brb putting it on. i like to skulk about at night, pretending i'm a shade.

my trenchcoat is usually in the back of my car wrapped around a machete and a crowbar. the cool thing about the trench coat is it has huuuuge pockets so i can easily conceal my 1911.

I have a cloak, but it's mostly just for costuming. I don't think I could get away with wearing it regularly. Black leather trenchcoat on the other hand...

Ah, but you live in Canada. My city has about 40 thousands people living in it, but I'm in southeastern Poland. Fat chances of getting any remotely original piece of clothing here.

I don't wear a cloak, cape, or trench coat, but I do wear a chainmail vest all the time. Also, I'm working on a Rorschach costume made out of chainmail so I'll eventually have a chainmail trench coat. Here's what I have so far:

Dude, it's in Europe. You're BY DEFINITION closer to people who are awesome than I am.

Seriously, you know all the malarky the USA gets for its Bible Belt? Well, I live in Canada's version of that. We could FIT Poland into THIS PROVINCE TWICE OVER and the population of Poland is larger than my entire country's.

Plus I'm pretty sure the coat's imported from the UK anyways.

Although your city's half the size of mine, so that does make a difference. I wish you luck, but trust me man, there are going to be trenchcoats in your country at thrift stores for cheap.

Oh, I have no doubts that I will find a trenchcoat in my country. But I sure as heck wouldn't find it in my city or near it - so I'm going to do this when I enlist into college and start living in Cracow or other big town instead of going there from time to time. Also, we should stop derailing this thread with my ramblings, I suppose.

Well, Alberta can't quite fit the Netherlands into itself 16x over, if that's any consolation?

(We're not even that big a province...EDIT:: And we've only got about 3 1/2 million people in all this land, too. So feel proud of your population density at least?)

ON TOPIC:: I should try to find a cloak. I've only seen one in real life, and the guy said he got it in Scotland. It could be a grand adventure OR an exercise in futility...

It's Welsh. It is by definition unpronouncable. Don't listen to any Welshmen trying to convince you that there is, in fact, a way to pronounce Welsh words. It's just a plot to confuse us, so they can take over the world while we're busy trying to get the 'LL' right.

I have no idea how to pronounce it properly, not actually being Welsh.
I, however, say 'gwinn channer gwill.'
The Gwyn and Gwyll being the emphases, the 'channer' part said really fast.

EDIT:Is anyone gonna ask me what it means?

Some pointers: the 'wy' is pronounced like the 'uoy' in 'buoy'. The ch is somewhat like the one in 'loch'. And the 'll'... well, it's an unvoiced L. I wouldn't know how else to describe it. And be warned: as I said, while you're trying to pronounce the 'll', the welsh will conquer the world.

I think that it can look fine on a woman. Just look at The Quick and The Dead.

Also, it's extremely utilitarian, too. Sucker's waterproof, warm, covers most all of your body...

i have two cloaks... my pretty one, which is black velvet and lined with black satin (and has a hood) and my medieval re-enactment one with is red wool lined with yellow wool and with a rabbit fur collar.
I love wearing cloaks. very good when you just want to be warm, but not so good if you need to be doing something with your hands and it's very cold.

... oh year, i also have 2 short capes - comes down to about my waist - one made of (i think) ferret fur and a white one made from mink. Both vintage and bought at op-shops.

Jesse Drake

Oddly enough, from time to time, I ask myself what kind of cape I'd wear, and I have the exact one in mind. It's dark red, almost black, and goes just over my shoulders, clasped to my (well, if I were to dress in a cape, I'd wear the whole costume) tunic. It's goes down almost to the bottom of my back, but stops. It's cut off, jagged, and not even.
