Hey I'm currently building a character for an upcoming campaign and I plan on making him an Archivist, so naturally I want his int mod to be through the roof.

My DM is letting our group have races / templates that have a max LA of +2, so I'm wondering if any of you guys can think of a good race that gives a high bonus to int (like at least +4), that has an LA of +2 or less.

Thanks!

Grey Elf, Monster Manual, gives +2 and that's pretty much all I know.

Drow may get something, and they are LA+1.

Is that 'free' LA (as in, it doesn't actually change the amount of XP your character needs/the amount of real levels you have) or just that you can take up to LA +2 if you want to, but it'll use the standard rules? If it's the first, you'd be crazy not to take advantage of it; the Phrenic Creature (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/phrenicCreature.htm) template is pretty awesome. If it's the second, it's a trap and you should be a Gray Elf- no amount of Int is worth two real class levels for a fullcaster.

I don't know any template worth mentioning.

Races... Gray Elf [MMI] (+2 Dex, +2 Int, -2 Con, -2 Str) and Fire Elf [UA] (+2 Dex, +2 Int, -2 Con, -2 Cha) have no LA

Drow get +2 Int, +2 Cha, +2 Dex and -2 Con (among other things) for +2 LA

/E: Your best bet would be a Grey or Fire Elf, with the Phrenic Creature Template xD

The free La +2 mentioned does not count towards my XP total, so if I were say level 9, with a +2 LA race, then I would still be ECL 9.

So Phrenic Gray Elf.

I'd go with Phrenic Fire Elf myself, but that's because I'd rather use Cha as a penalty stat instead of Str.

Full caster and LA does not mix. Go Gray Elf.

Full caster and LA does not mix. Go Gray Elf.

Unless the LA is free. Which in this case it is.

Saint? Archivist bonus spells are based on wisdom, and extra charisma is good for a DMM Sacred Exorcist dip. Also, once you buy a monk belt, that's double Wisdom to AC.

Deep Imaskari +2 Int –2 Dex LA=0
Sharakim +2 Str +2 Int –2 Dex –2 Cha LA=+1
Fire Hobgoblin +2 Dex +2 Con +2 Int –2 Cha LA=+1
Chitine +2 Dex +2 Con +2 Int –4 Cha LA=+2
Tiefling +2 Dex +2 Int –2 Cha LA=+1
Satyr +2 Dex +2 Con +2 Int +2 Wis +2 Cha LA=+2

Maybe you can combine a race with a LA<2 with the template of Voidmind (Str +4 Dex +2 Con +2 Int +2 Cha –2 LA=+1) but there are some serius drawbacks...

There are some templates with LA=+3 with +4 Int but...

I'll agree that Phrenic Gray Elf is probably your best choice for an Int bonus. It grants a host of psi-like abilities, which are automatically augmented fully for free, plus power/spell resistance depending on transparency and all the elf racial abilities. A venerable Phrenic Dragonwrought Kobold is probably the only thing that gets a higher Int bonus for a +2 LA, and it's a lot of cheese for only another +1.

I'd go with better overall utility/power, such as a Shadow Creature (LoM) Gray Elf.

If the DM allows homebrew races, my Fenneckin race gets +2 to Int and Dex for -2 to Str and Cha: http://forum.mydndgame.com/index.php/topic,191.msg6400.html#msg6400 .
