Welcome to the 24th ABR Discussion Thread!
Now go make comics!
Because we used to burn through new ABR threads so quickly, we created the Discussion thread. All banter goes here, and all comics and non-canon kills go in the main thread. (see line below)

Avatar Battle Royale: We All Live in A Yellow Citadel (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88925) is the current thread. Post artwork there.
Even though it seems to be holding together nicely;
The ABR backup thread (http://z15.invisionfree.com/Remember/index.php?showtopic=161), is used in the event of Giantitp becoming untenable due to server issues or otherwise.
The next link is quite good, although it could have used some more images.

@Nameless: Wouldn't Ins, a nanomachine soul in a dead (well the body was) wizard's body count as out of death's field of work? Thus every power related to death's job wouldn't work (neither nanomachines or corpses can die you know) and he could be weaker against Ins' attacks, that could explain why he doesn't just kill him.

And it's very different if it's Nameless that kills a person than if it was anyone else, Nameless has immortality (a power of death so if the victim fight back it could count as misuse) and omnipresence to help him.

If Ins has a soul and can die, he's readable. Nameless' other powers have nothing to do with how much he can harm Ins. His immortality has more to do with him already being dead, rather then being Death.

He can stop working and be destroyed but his "soul" is a nanomachine's thus he's not a living being (more of a construct) and cannot "die", he shouldn't even get to an afterlife when we finish him.

To my knowledge being death never has given immortality (liches, zombies, vampires, they all can be defeated and send to the afterlifes they deserve)

You can kill them, but they don't die.

Isn't that's what kill means? (to make someone die) besides I didn't write die I wrote defeated and send to the afterlifes they deserve, so I don't get the point of your post.

Lyinginbedmon

Whatever Onasuma's resurrection attempt put into Lying's corpse was something from the Sovice block that the spell identified as a "soul", some kind of energy signature related to the intellectual workings of it.

But it is very unlikely to be a traditional Incarnum-based soul, because if it were then the Sovices would be much more familiar with things like magic. It's more likely an energy similar to it but with a much more universe-native origin.

So Ins is technically soul-less, and an aberration of both Sovice and human physiology.

I mean, they're immortal unless they're killed; they don't die on their own.

To kill, is to cause something so much damage that the being is unable to remain animated.

I always considered the word kill to be used when one takes the life away from another living being. *shrugs*

Edit- Art thread discussion thread link updated.

Also, could anyone post that chart thing showing the Alf members and their respective ranks etc, please?(And one for the UNA if that was ever made?) I feel I should update all my templates to FI before the thing actually starts..

Scratch that, I found it in the first post. <.<

Don't think we have anything planned other then a few people with their own individual character intros.

Once Mad starts the plot, I guess people will just do that, and after the initial intro's someone is going to make a comic introducing some macguffin or something and that'll get the ball rolling.

Ermm... Ok, but, to be honest, with FFF wrapping up, now is not a great time for newbies to join. Then again, I chose this time to rejoin, so that's a bit hypocritical of me.

Let's see...

Fat Fish Fury begins with Almighty Salmon falling in Love with Threeshades (TS for short). Threeshades then "falls in love" with Salmon's younger, but much larger, brother, Leroy. A fight breaks out, and Threeshades flees to her fortress of vengeance, with Salmon in pursuit. Both acquire several allies, most notably- Salmon meets his old friend Kpenguin, who has done a lot of the exposition, while TS meets up with Lyinginbedmon, who has cast a spell of permanent domination on her (in actuality, Threeshades rolled a natural 20 on her bluff check.. so yeah). Kpenguin then reveals TS's true goal: Leeroy is the only person who can open a mystic temple, within which is a macguffin which controls dragons, which will allow her to rule the world like her grandmother Sildyu before her. However, a parody of the Order of the Scribble stopped her and locked the temple, so it can only be opened with 5 keys.

There are more story arcs dealing with Threeshade's redemption, the death of the Aranthi Shades, and so on, but the last bit of FFF, and the major villains of its sequel, Future imperfect, are the sovice.

The Sovice are... essentially, they're magical replicators (from Stargate SG-1). Their leader is Inses... Insesectile or something or other. We just call him Ins. Ins is a clone of lying with the soul of a sovice block with in him. Ins has formed the United Nations of Avbaroy, which is attempting to solidify its hold over the world. The UNA appears to be benevolent, but the Sovice's record speaks for itself.

The last story arc of FFF deals with the battle of Aphlantica. Or something. Anyway, 2 Sovice battleships are bearing down on Aphlantica, attempting to destroy the last large hold of resistance to sovice domination.

The Sovice have the Soverign, and its sister ship, both nearly indestructible, while the Resistance has been reduced to The Citadel of Bis Anu (an ancient, magical, flying city).

For more info, read through the archive (which is sadly incomplete).

Visiting the wiki and reading any of the backstory comics (Lyinginbedmon's is the most informative, dealing with Sildyu's reign of terror, although the sovice do make an appearance.

EDIT: Urgh... Someone else try to summurise this in simpler terms while I try to read the comics that aren't in the archive.

You left out an important part: Ins is in Lying's original body. Lying died casting an apocalyptic spell, and after a chicken (not me)tried to resurrect him, a newly deceased Sovice spirit went into Lying's body instead. of course, Lying had many clones, so he came back to life, but that doesn't matter. What does is: Ins looks exactly like Lying, except that he has blue eyes and, these days, is looking a lot healthier.

Also, Squark; if you want people to notice when you make a new comic in the same post as an old one, you might want to copy the contents of the post, delete it, and make a new one with both the old comic and the new one. @Squark: What the hell is Ins doing on the ship ?

It's part of his plan.

I have no idea what it is.

Only that it involved being on the ship at that moment.

Look: It was a spur of the moment decision to provide a plot point for FI. The way I thought of it: Ins manipulated events so Squark would be on the ship for him to capture, because he needs a deity for some reason, and a god out of his/her own universe is much easier to capture than one in their own universe, since out of their own universe, their powers are reduced to... immortality, and whatever their class gives them.

if the head of that person is supposed to be anywhere near human facial proportions, it would go up half of the hat's height. But that would also mean that guy has a horribly disfigured skull.

"Alice in wonderland" was a dream from the start, so she can't have used drugs since it didn't even happen.

In Mario's world the effects of the mushrooms and the stars are REAL thus there isn't any hallucinations which mean that it aint drugs (I think it's magic or something) else eating non-poisonous mushrooms in real life would also be using drugs.

You don't get affected that much by alcohol unless you drink a lot of it, thus it at least can't really be seen as dangerous enough to be classified as the same kind of drug as what normally is refered to as drugs, besides I'm against alcohol too so I don't see how one wrong makes another right.

What does being less dangerous have to do with anything? Drugs are drugs no matter how dangerous or addictive they are.

And there are bad effects. As long as mario isnt tripping on at least one of them, he's extremely fragile and already dies when touching a turtle the wrong way. So he's constantly looking for the next one to feel safer.

How well know is Igon Minoblendy ? :smallconfused:

People who know their history from the Age of Dragons have probably heard of him as leader of the Exersus Resistance, so he generally uses Lyinginbedmon to avoid detection more. Those who only know him from history think he died following the Battle of the Palace.

As for the world at large, only folks in Exersus and the significantly high-ups of government know he's still doing the rounds of peaceful civilisation, but virtually no-one outside of Exersus knows the full significance of him.

In short, unless you're a political big-wig or a collaborator, you're kinda unlikely to know him.

Alright, so in this case, how should They spin Igon's involvement. I see two options.
1) They refer to him as "Lyinginbedmon", an insane mage who opposes the UNA because he can't stand the idea of the world in a peaceful union.
Or
2) They identify him as "Igon Minoblendy", who has spent so long fighting that he knows nothing else, and is striking out against the UNA on pure reflex, or because he mistakenly believes it to be evil.

Personally, I'm going for the first one.

The idea of a powerful mage living 600 years is not that unbelievable considering some of the other stuff in Avbaroy. Neither is the idea of somebody changing his appearance with magic. If Ins wanted to claim that he was Igon Minoblendy, which is technically true, it would be his word against Lyings. And his word is backed up by Them.

Think about it, Igon, as leader of the Exersus resistance, would be considered a historical hero. The UNA has great PR work, and people believe what they want to believe. Which do you want to believe, that the historical hero and resistance leader, Igon Minoblendy, is currently leading the organization that has united the world, or that he is fighting to bring down that organization.

They're stick figures, they'll look similar no matter what. No-one comments that every third guard is identical.
In universe, Ins has a personal stylist, and etc., while Lying is stuck in a cave with a box of scraps, plus I think Lying likely has access to illusionary spells. The UNA could even claim "The insurgent calling himself 'Igon Minoblendy' has taken the appearance of the Chairman of the UNA, Insecesacinsectel, in an obvious attempt to undermine government support", or something to that effect.

Gah! The horror! It's kinda creepy! (though I've seen far more horrifying stuff it's still bad)
Indeed. A half naked stick figure is truly shocking. No individual should ever see the skin of another individual. Reproduction is to be done while blindfolded.

A Hoo-Whatnow?

Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy reference. It comes from the guide entry on towels:

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: nonhitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Hence a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in "Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is." (Sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy.)

Now, I don't think we should all go naked outside, but the first reaction a person should have to see a person or the drawing of one naked, in my opinion, is not "Argh, my eyes !"

I'm also against the taboo that says you shouldn't eat insects. It's a healthy, even better source of nutrition than "normal" meats !

Now let's talk about something else, the thread's already derived too far.

Are all loose ends except the Alphantican-Tajiran War finished ?

It's just a stick figure, damn it ! Imagine if you encountered Classical Greek sculptures... You'll probably say "Gah, my eyes !".

Damned cultural taboos... :smallannoyed:

its common knowledge the original greek olympics were done totally naked. still, this is like 3000 years* in the future. We don't do that anymore.

I agree, just because some old weirdoes walked nude around don't mean we should.

@Mad: You can't change that taboo and when you get into puberty you'll understand better (read the comic I linked to it explains it pretty well) and eating insects while indeed provide many proteins also involves a lot of risks for diseases.

Read This (http://www.egscomics.com/?date=2005-10-12) and I think you'll understand why people react to nudity like that, or not.
No offence to Dan Shive, but I don't think he's managed to properly summarise the reasons behind the nudity taboo that has been prevalent in the past few centuries, but was far less distinct prior to then.

That depends on what the point is. I'm not too clear on that, personally. And nothing you can say or do can change our idea that MM's avatar is fine.

Yes, but we do have this thing, this season, called "Summer". An annual time of the year where the weather gets really hot. This takes place from June to late Augest, if I remember correctly. Currently it is "Summer" in Canada.

And no, just for the record, we do not live if Igloos. :smalltongue:

1. I don't see what so great about that statue.
It's famous. And as Wikipedia puts it, it is "shorthand for culture".

2. It still summarise why most people are against nudity now, we are too used to clothes.
Not really. Any mature individual knows that nudity ≠ sex. Besides, we're nude at other times. You take off your clothes to bathe, and that's not considered offensive.

3. People bathe nude in the midst of winter over here (weirdoes).
Cold can be refreshing, although the sudden shock of immersion in very cold water can prove to be fatal.

4. Because most people and almost all religions get offended if you show public nudity on international sports channels. :smalltongue:.
I've seen total nudity on public television before, in the middle of the day, in the UK. And that show didn't get in any trouble, and is still on the air. I don't watch it, because I have better things to do. Like sit around on a forum all day.

5. I personally is against cannibalism because (among other reasons) it too easily results in murder, I think bugs are disgusting and clothes are warm and fun:smallbiggrin:
How does cannibalism beget murder? It's not like human meat would be addictive. Besides, even if it was, with soylent green was on the shelves, you wouldn't need to kill anyone for your next "fix".

6. my parents aren't even dead yet while the ancient greeks entire civilization is, I like clothes and not wearing them would just add to my problems.
If you're competing in a strenuous sporting event, you might see the appeal of not wearing heavy or limiting clothing.

7. Cows don't live in poop, a lot of insects do.
You've obviously not spent much time at a farm. Cows excrete something like 30kg of crap a day, and a lot of insects don't go anywhere near crap, particularly the juicy sort of bug.

It's hardly surprising that he decided to make it a horror. Despite it apparently being based on the life of Charles Dodgson. Who didn't do drugs, despite what the earlier discussion may have had you believe. If anything other than his own imagination contributed to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, it was his occasional migraine hallucinations.

Advise is a lot easier to give if we know what your advising you with. What "blocking thing" are you using?

As an example, which may work for your program, I'll tell you how to unblock specific blocked images with AdBlock Plus. Click the drop down arrow next to the logo, then click Preferences. Under "My AdBlocking Rules" you should see "http://www.kinogo.com/victor/*" or similar. Uncheck the "Enabled" box, then click "Apply". Then when you re-block the image, make sure you tell it to block the image's address only, including filetype.

I wasn't addressing you specifically, there was a lengthy discussion on the subject of drugs and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at an earlier point.
To my knowledge, Charles Dodgson never spent time in an abandoned castle, plagued by visions of a girl he knew and wrote stories for. He also wasn't Jack the Ripper, there are many huge flaws in that claim. For one, he has concrete alibis for three of Jack's murders.
