Random Banter?

Random Banter!

I think you know what this thread is for... But just in case you don't:
It's for random discussion of stuff you want to talk about but can't, won't or shouldn't make a new thread about. This includes almost everything. Everything but spam.

That being said, there are rules. Which are laid out below. If you are not familiar with them, please read them (basically, just be civil). If you are already familiar with them, fine, don't, it's your choice. (But you'll only have yourself to blame if you forget one of the rules and accidentally break it. :smallsmile: )

Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

And here, linked for your convenience, are the previous incarnations of this thread.

As stated above, this thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. That is to say, this is a forum, not your IM client. People have set up an unofficial IRC chat thingy for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat. The latter is great... the former? Not so much.

So... have fun, I guess!

The new thread! She is mine, ha ha ha!

Hmm, now how do I work in the anachronism...oh well, I'll figure that out later.

Against us Earthdwellers. Haven't you ever found it suspicious? The moon is always up there, watching and circling. He's watching all of us, you know. This may seem like an innocent order of literature to most, but you shouldn't be fooled. He obviously has something sinister in mind. I mean, do you know how hard it is to get Amazon to even deliver to the moon?

Hello there Afro, it's not often we see you around these parts.

You'd be surprised where I show up. I run the Heroes discussion threads on Media Discussions and I often show up here to ask... well, let's leave it at "questions" and hope nobody remembers, eh? Stupid foot.

I personally only have the one, very confused Welshman in my family tree.

I think he's mostly confused due to the fact that there aren't any other Welshmen further up(or is it down? I can never remember...). And somehow that ties into a Cherokee that may or may not have existed or have played a role in producing my ancestors with my other ancestors.

I am very happy to have the SRD, it's just with the large amount of splatbooks that are out I've heard about a lot of things that I won't have access to. Thanks for the offer of help, but I don't think I'd end up using anything I don't have in a book anyways. As for rule questions, two of my friends have more experience with the system than I, so I can usually ask them.

The Time Loop is complicated.

Recurrent topics: books; music - especially around the metal and hard rock genres, sometimes slipping into alt rock/folk rock etc. most oten occurs between Moff, dragonprime and Fred; Shakespeare; languages - modern foreign languages, English and older more scholarly languages; Gilbert and Sullivan; math - P_Z and Thufir notably; Science!; the supernatural; college(US)/uni (UK)/college (UK)/high/middle/elementary school etc. life; nostalgia; cartoons; Rutskarn is P_Z and vice versa; steampunk; Phase is the moon; blogs; whimsy; films; video games; history and in - jokes. And the weather. And foreign/native countries.
And each of these general looped discussions as its own sub - loops and sub - topics. These invariably segue into another Loop.
Sometimes the topics are repeated almost verbatim rom a previous Loop, this enables one to somewhat guess who'll post what next or at least the general topic flow.

Speaking of Loops, time to bring one back.
Yesterday my mum heard on the radio a lengthy ramble/discussion/argument about the rhyme The Owl and the ***** Cat.
In Britland at least, every child hears it and learns at least a few verses if not all of it and remembers snippets all their life.
Now, my mum was trying her hardest to remember the rhyme and all she could remember was:
The owl and the ***** cat
Went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat
They took some honey and plenty of money
Wrapped up in a five pound note
And this was after I'd joined in trying to remember too. Anyway, we pretty much gave up after we couldn't recall any whole lines, just some fragments.
But today one huge - ass (pardon my language) Victorian poetry anthology arrived (1460 pg), and guess what one of the poems in it was?
Yep.
My mum was very pleased as she'd been trying to remember it for a whole day.

But Oh, heart heart hear

Where on the deck my Captain lies, frozen cold and dead

I can't remember the second verse and all I have of the third is:
<Stuff>

Whereon the deck ym Captain lies, frozen cold and dead.

every now and then I restort to the internets to re-memorise this. It's the first poem I ever memorised.

Can anyone else remember the way the poem goes without resorting to the internets?

Totally off the top of my head and without looking at anything, so I may have some words wrong, and I definitely don't know the definitive punctuation:

The Owl and the *****-Cat by Edward Lear

The Owl and the *****-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat.
They took some money and plenty of honey
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.

The Owl looked up to the stars above
And sang to a small guitar,
'Oh lovely *****, oh ***** my love,
What a beautiful ***** you are!'

***** said to the Owl,
'You elegant fowl, how charmingly sweet you sing!
Oh let us be married, too long have we tarried
But what shall we do for a ring?'

They sailed away for a year and a day,
To the land where the bong-tree grows,
And there in a wood, a piggy-wig stood
With a ring on the end of his nose.

'Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?' Said the piggy, 'I will.'
So they took it away and were married next day
By the turkey who lived on the hill.

They dined on mince and slices of quince
Which they ate with a runcible spoon,
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon.

Edited because I forgot about the filter. Duh. But that reminds me of this story...

Well, it seems I remembered completely wrong. I got the first verse mostly right, substituting frozen for the appropriate fallen, and the "Arm Beneath your head" line is from verse two.

Here is the real poem:

Copy-pasted from http://www.bartleby.com/142/193.html
O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

EDIT:
Apparently the word has uncesnored itself. Wow. Now I can actually read and understand the poem.

Technically we didn't. We just got around it, we shouldn't really do it, but because we weren't using it as a bad word and talking about a rather cute and inane child's poem we did.

I do agree that Americans don't have much fun slang, just common slang or uninteresting stuff.
'Course, this could only be by going with the most common American slang and that somewhere in one of the more obscure states there's a very funny piece of slang, but we don't know it.

Nothing can beat Cockney rhmying slang for strangeness though. Actually, I believe quite a few things will. But it's probably the best known rhyming slang in the world.

Under Milk Wood is a fearful title. No, I haven't read it nor could I quote you lines from it, but I know it touches on the subject of the dead, unless I'm mashing it together with Our Town. However, cemeteries in the U.S. are, in my experience, open and cultivated lawns, where the only trees permitted are collared with iron or pruned to passivity. When I read about people in their graves under trees, I can only imagine that the liquid forest has flowed over them and drowned their graves in a second death. Trees oughtn't to walk.

Come to think of it, why do we fence in the dead? They're not going anywhere. That is more than an American peculiarity at least: the American cemeteries were hemmed with wrought-iron fencing, the Swedish ones with low stone walls little more than straight piles, the Irish ones (how few! how fewer without a church attached!) with walls of dressed stone.

It was the Mel Gibson 'Hamlet', though...

Ah, well, they cut quite a lot of the script for that one.

@Quincx: "Under Milk Wood" is a lovely play, all about daily life in a Welsh village. I don't recall any death being involved in it.

Quincx: We do not want the dead to get out, nor do we want spirits who need some special invitation to get over a two-foot high fence to get in to muck about with the lingering bodies/spirits.

I personally dislike the use of coffins. Why? First, they're expensive. Now, I know not having coffins would make many people lose their jobs, but I just don't think wasting wood on coffins is really useful.

Second, they're a hindrance. How? Well, think about decay. The main reason it exists is to enrich the soil. Now, if you take a perfectly good piece of dead, ready to decay matter and stuff it into a wooden, lacquered box which is kind of made decay-resistant, then what do you get? Anti-nature.

I understand that some people need them, but if you can't remember your loved ones without having to go to a grave, then did you really care about them that much?

EDIT: @dish: Ah, I seem to have messed up things. Damn confusing IMDB. And for some reason it seemed longer than 130 minutes. And it's the 1990 version. My bad.

Merchant of Venice is okay, but I disagree with everyone casting Shylock as the villian.

I had to write an essay on pretty much this subject as English Coursework. It surprised me too, how many people wrote about Shylock being the villain, because I saw him as more "evil from necessity".

The only Shakespeare plays I like, though, are his comedies.

There was no pun intended, folks!

...

Okay, that sucked. Now for something completely different!

...

That sucked even more.

Anyway, I just came from walking my two dogs. One is from a pound, the other raised in our house. The one from the pound hasn't been properly trained, we're thinking, so I'm trying to teach him to stay. Only, today, as he bolted towards the door, I blocked his way but accidentally made him get stuck between me and the doorjamb. He didn't like it, so he bit me. Though I've noticed that he's getting less brutal in his attacks - about three months ago he would've kept going on and on until I'd retreated or pulled him away with the leash or something, but this time he only bit me once or twice. It also doesn't help that he's a small bugger, ergo being about four times faster than my other dog with who I have to struggle with to claim ownership of my shoes from time to time.

So my Achilles tendon hurts and this is a good thing. Go figure.

My kitchen is a shell. It has barely three walls, a floor and a ceiling. Nothing else in it but two acros (ceiling supporty thingies as we've demolished one of the supporting walls of the house), some wood, a bag and some dust.
No sink.
No cooker.
No washing machine.
No tumbledryer.
Sarting tomorrow there's no shower; no bathroom sink and only a very temporary toilet. They've alreay started smashing up the shower tiles so anyone taking the last shower for a while had to wear flipflops to avoid tiles shards and stuff.
It is a surprisingly large kitchen actually. It echoes.
And they're taking the 'utility' room roof down soon as well. That's also empty aside from some building materials.
Did I mention it's raining rivers of rivers here?

Speaking of that. My sister had the most unfortunate credits reward today.
Quick backstory. My old secondary school operates on a credits system. You do good you get a merit. Three merits is a credit. You can be awarded multiple merits and credits.
After I left the school they implemented a rewards scheme. Anyone who earned over fifty credits a term (something which is incredibly hard to do, especially for those not participating in after school clubs) get a reward, fully paid by the school.
Little Sister, naturally, has got those fifty plus credits every single term from her ridiculous number of clubs and extra - curricular activities.
This term they decided in advance that people who got fifty credits would get to go to the open air pool by the sea and have an ice cream. School's treat. Today.
Did I mention that it rained rivers of rivers today? And that it was cold?
They still went swimming.
:amused:
I guess it wasn't too bad as they would've gotten wet in the pool anyway. So the rain wasn't much of a problem.
But not many people enjoyed it. Poor Little Sister.

On the weather fact, I am willing to accept the fact that it was 40 degrees Celsius in the sun today. Fun fact: it is quite impossible to travel in Tallinn without being exposed to the sun for about 65-75% of the time. How did I spend my day? Wiping rivers of sweat off my back during a five minute badminton game. Also, yesterday the same kind of weather turned almost instantaneously into a MASSIVE fog, in which the maximum vision was about... 20 metres or so. Had real fun at the coastline during night :smallamused: There was a small ledge. The sea wasn't there. I dropped off the edge of the world. That was real fun.

Navi is not the most annoying video game sidekick/adviser person, though. That crown of barbed wire and fecal matter goes to the straight-trippin', always-quippin' sluthound Xana from Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

Like Navi, she will never shut the hell up. Unlike Navi, every single thing out of her mouth falls under these categories:

1.) Unclever, unsubtle sexual reference or proposition (she is a voice in your goddamn head.)

2.) "Helpful" advice ("That's a monster. You should kill it.")

3.) Blatantly obvious, stunningly unconvincing argument that the protagonist should go to the evil side and betray his friends. ("Bah! Besides heal you, guide you, and back you up in combat, what has she ever done for you? She's using you for her own selfish purposes, like saving the world from evil and trying to save your soul! You should go kick a puppy!")

Xana and the unlikeable love interest, combined with a godawful "twist" that sparks a character transformation which makes absolutely no sense, were enough to make me stop playing the game.

Yeah, I've heard bad things about those carp. Plus, mid-Atlantic base'd probably be something of a tax haven, so that's a bonus. And I suppose you could always conference call any meetings.

You'd need to work on the mad cackle and fiendish plots that any self-respecting laser-defended base owner needs though.

By ANoia, Goddess of Things That Get Stuck In Drawers and Lost Causes, I have created a monster.
So, start of the months my brother asks for for some anime and manga recommendations; and seeing as he's new to it (I mean, sure, he's seen Pokemon, Digimon and some of the other dubbed things that were fads, but nothing proper) I gave him a wide range of stuff, plus some good sites.
The list was as follows:

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi because he'd seen an episode or two of it and liked it.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
CCS
Magic Knight Rayearth
Death Note
Cowboy Bebop
Azumanga Daioh
Hellsing
Rurouni Kenshin
Lucky Star
xxxHolic manga
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles because he was intrigued and horrified by my garbled attempt at explaining the plot
Code Geass
Berserk
Bleach even though I don't really like it
One Piece (see above)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Samurai Champloo
Serial Experiments Lain
Neon Genesis Evangelion
And a few others.
He has now seen all of 1 - 5, 7, 8, 10, 14, and 18; is almost halfway through 13 and 20 and he's begun reading the two specific manga I recommended to him.
I'm . . . I'm, I'm . . . not entirely sure where he got the time to do all this, but it's eating into our monthly internet usage.
It's only the 17th of July!
And the plus side, he's loved all of them so far, though Evangelion is, and I quote, "Making [him] all WTF" so Little Brother has a fairly eclectic taste and he's starting to find his own preferences now.
But I think Little Brother is warping time.

I'll admit that the carp are bad. I've seen many good people fall to their combined might. The bears are also bad, I lost my best friend to a pack of them. However, nothing can prepare you for what you get when you cross a pack of carp with a pack of bears: Aqua Bears. Just one of them can lay waste to an entire underwater community. Luckily, as of yet they have never gone hunting in groups of more than 2 or 3, but if they realize the potential for destruction that a pack of them carries, then we can only pray for a swift death.

Trigun, that's the other other other one he's watching. I thinking that's around sixty episodes right? That's impressive.
Actually, when I got into anime properly I watched all of CCS in just under two days, and that was before I had a laptop with which to watch anime online. And I'm currently watching four anime at once, and three mangas. And Girl Genius is very epic. I've read the entire archive two or three times. And I have a Curly Heterodyne avvie!

Start the boy on Azumanga, too! I love that show.

*cough*

7. Azumanga Daioh

He has now seen all of . . . 7

It left him dazed. With Chiyo - chan's dad; and Sakaki and the cars. And the drunk scene, and the Osaka knife scene.

Try Avatar? If you're able to ignore a couple of blad plot and writing stuffs, it's pretty good/amazing. Very fluid animation, too.

EDIT: Also Naruto. And parts of One Piece. It ended me going "Why the hell does this have rubber people and pirates?!" and switching the channel.

Why would you change the channel after thinking something like that?

Also, channel? Dub? Ewww. Sub or broke.

I concur. Wouldn't something that bizarre make you want to watch it more?

Great, now you've got me wanting to watch Princess Mononoke again. :smallannoyed:

It's just no fun to watch it alone.:smallfrown: ...not anymore anyway.

Errr, no? a)I don't like pirates b)Even Mr. Fantastic can't pull off being Rubber-Man.

Also, it was a dub. Into German. Couldn't understand crack. No, not going to give it a second chance, because of the aforementioned reasons.

@Coidzor: Well, find someone to watch it with, you know. People. Humans, even. Though animals work too. Especially giant wolves.

Also, each time I think about Mononoke, A****aka's Theme starts playing in my head, I see giant wolves running and something inside me breaking as if I were to cry soon. Is that nostalgia?

This song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cbancAd600) always makes me tear up. It's a beautiful song.

I leave soon, to go to my cottage. Have a pleasant weekend, Playground. :smallsmile:

Stay safe Alteran in the woolly wilds.

I'd say, yes, that might just be nostalgia, Hannes.

I'm kinda in a paucity of people right now, unfortunately. :smallfrown:

Fun fact: there are 23 results for "Rustkarn" on the forum search.

I'm a little impressed it's that small.

Posts. I don't think my name is in any thread titles, alone a frequent misspelling thereof.

*long, contented sigh* Steak, Fried Potatoes and Cauliflower for dinner. Though my mood is still quite languid because of yesterday's events, the food was still rather comforting.

Plus it's filling and the fat from it makes ya wanna sleep good. :smallamused:

So Rutskarn has 3 times the posts and posts referencing him than I do from my search attempts. Not knowing his search criteria I only did a basic search though...
