View Full Version : Final Boss Themes: Ideas?

Leliel
2009-07-17, 03:56 PM
Well, it's time for another entry in my old series, "Leliel's Themed Compilation Of Music Ideas".

Today's theme: Final Bosses of Various Campaigns.

Rules:

1. You may not suggest One Winged Angel. I have had that song every other thread I make, and I'm getting tired of hearing it.

2. I mean it!

To start off the thread:

Zero: Ace Combat Zero (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a7xV9F1Hco).

Megalith Agnus Dei-Ace Combat Distant Thunder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLqnTEIEY64).

Blaze of Glory.

Especially fitting if a PC dies.

Another One Bites the Dust.

Also works if a PC dies, as werll as the boss (I mean, don't they all die eventually?)

Dragon Attack.

Works for dragons.

Unbreakable.

Psychological thing, honestly. Still a cool song.

... So my songs are either Bon Jovi or Queen. Don't judge.

This wins the thread :smallcool:

I notice you have banned One Winged Angel, but not Dancing Mad... to be fair, if you want to ban one, you really should ban the other. FF fanboys would otherwise get into pointless flamewar and get the thread locked otherwise...

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night has some really awesome background music

Shudder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyITEQDiJq4), from the Einhänder soundtrack. I feel this fits best if there are lesser mooks around to blaze through in addition to a single boss figure.

Dancing Mad. The only boss music epic enough to require four movements.

(No, seriously, you should listen to it - even ignoring the fact that Kefka's a better villain than Sephiroth*, it's still a great song and I don't get the impression that it's been suggested to you before)

* :smallcool: I promise I won't get into a flamewar - the important thing is giving both songs fair consideration, even if you seem to have had OWA suggested a lot before and are tired of it

Other than that... IIRC some of the Bowser themes from Mario games were decent. Also maybe listen to some of the regular boss battle music from the final fantasy games.

From anime... no contest. Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku (Absolute Destiny Apocalypse, and the song is just as Epic as the name sounds. From the series Revolutionary Girl Utena)

SRW overload!

Because powerful, evil bastards deserve powerful, evil music:

Black Betty By Ram jam. No, seriously. Imagine a gigantic Aboleth that's on fire leaping at the PCs, screeching in anger...

Yo ho Black betty, Bam the lamb!

Jokes aside, if a PC dies and/or the PCs are in a DANGEROUS situation... Iron Maiden's Hallowed be Thy nameis good for bosses.

More than a few of DragonForce's songs would fit quite well. And you won't have to loop them as much as some. :smalltongue:

The Disgaea and Prinny OSTs have some decent boss music on them if you hunt through them.

This is going to vary greatly depending on the theme of the campaign and the final boss >.> but here are mine:

- Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill) - Blind Guardian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWDR_ncgqwg) - Classic final confrontation music. The song itself ends on a downer... but to me that just makes it more perfect as it fits well for a desperate struggle >.> Especially a duel between champions.

- Battlefield - Blind Guardian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmu0LMlS8Us) - Mostly works for large-scale final battles. Situations where the final boss is at the head of a massive army. (Think Xykon at Azure City... although hopefully your PCs are winning if this is the final confrontation >.>)

- Through the Fire and the Flames - Dragonforce (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc9_U-RBSuk) - Confronting the main villain after you've broken his/her power. That is: You've destroyed their armies, foiled their plans, removed their immortality, and the MacGuffin is secure or destroyed... but the villain has to be made to answer for their crimes. (Lyrics aside, the music makes the song feel rather upbeat)

- The Storm - Blackmore's Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IzVUOtMHa4) - The first part is best for pursuing a villain... like say up a staircase to the top of their tower. The song picks up, and as it does it starts to move toward something more appropriate for an actual fight. Probably best-suited toward a swashbuckling type battle (at least in my head).

I can probably come up with more songs too >.> but I don't want to take up too much thread space.

Since I always recommend SRW songs, how about some Touhou songs?

Remilia's theme: Septette for a Dead Princess (UI-70 remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBDc5NxTnnA) I'm using this for the true last boss of RHOD (not the optional one). Or you could always use it for a Vampire warlock.
Sakuya's theme: Lunar Clock ~Luna Dial~ (UI-70 remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMLtYlOa9Nc) Diamond Mind Swordsage/Rogue/Master Thrower.
Alice's theme: Doll Master ~She Who Played With People's Shapes~ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpxpSmMDM5A) Artificer who's just revived a legion of Warforged Titans. (This feels more like a desperate battle on top of a train to me than an actual final boss theme, though.) Here's another version. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRAO0nyehjo&feature=related)
Yukari's theme: Necrofantasia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgKnR2Wl1Ks)Epic Fey with epic Conjurer levels.
Flandre's theme: U.N. Owen Was Her? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFUtkwzZD_Q&feature=related). Chaotic and insane boss theme.

From Parasite Eve:
Final Eve battle theme: Femmes Fatales (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3Wq4BNl61M). For use against a half-Farspawn bard, no doubt.
Ultimate being final boss theme: U.B. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEyJWz5xj2A). I'm using this for the Wyrmlord Kharn battle in RHOD.

This is going to vary greatly depending on the theme of the campaign and the final boss >.> but here are mine:

This is my hands-down favorite Blind Guardian song of all time. It's definitely a "crusade-gone-wrong" song.
Especially the bridge:
Fiercely intense/outrageously blind to see
And in pain they keep on singing:
"We claim the land for the Highlord!
God bless the land and the Highlord!"

I find it truly unfortunate that none of the Geass soundtracks ever contained two of the best songs in the series:
-the creepy harpsichord piece that plays when Lelouch geasses Euphie
And
-the short but jarring theme that plays during the Ragnarok Junction.

Baten Kaitos has some good songs:

The True Mirror (guitar) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3Tx3DWeQcU&feature=related)

Supreme Ruler of the Nine Heavens (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_7o3aPzfTo)

Violent Storm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lB0b0fHbAY)

The soundtrack for Shadow of the Colossus is pretty much entirely composed of excellent boss themes. A few examples:

Demise of the Ritual (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxZtlk0fdwY)

A Violent Encounter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBgOFEvhmqk)

Messenger From Behind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf2A9NbOdZU)

Counterattack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwQm9Cm9y4A)

Both games have a bunch more good ones, but I don't feel like listing them all.

My responses to what other people picked, because these threads kinda suck when no one actually responds.

Zero: Ace Combat Zero (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a7xV9F1Hco).

Megalith Agnus Dei-Ace Combat Distant Thunder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLqnTEIEY64).

Ace Combat Zero is a very excellent choice, I saw my partner's little bro playing that game once. Distant Thunder's not♦ quite as cool, but it's still up there.

World Revolution (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaULITIzS3g), great for a desperate yet hopeful battle where the rest of the world is counting on you.

Eh... I'm not a fan, but there's a lot of Chrono Trigger music that just doesn't work for me.

The Final Countdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZkllM8znx4)?

Gets mad points just because. Still, it does get really repetitive...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmU2R9lTivYhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmU2R9lTivY

Devil Went Down to Georgia

Never heard the latter. I have trouble taking metal seriously, though. The music's not bad, but I'd probably use metal more often if there was a lyric mute button.

Another One Bites the Dust.

Also works if a PC dies, as werll as the boss (I mean, don't they all die eventually?)

The only one that you listed which I know. Doesn't really seem epic so much as darkly comic, but a nice choice. :elan:

Snakeater (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_zIKKOjC7Q)

I personally like the instrumental version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5OUhMoIO5M) better for BGM. It's really dramatic and awesome, but it's so... so dated. I don't mean that in a bad way, just that it's really evocative of 70's. I could see using this for a really suave robber baron in D&D, or a general crime lord in other time settings. Just listening I feel like I should be taking out a cigar and watching naked-Bond-girl silhouettes float before my eyes artistically.

The Grandmaster Revealed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rC1qNlfUI9c&feature=PlayList&p=814581FA1A40948D&index=12) from The Witcher OST. Takes a while to get going, but it's good, just like the rest of the soundtrack.

That is incredibly awesome, really fitting of a Dark Lord BBEG in his dark castle. I'm going to save this for later.

Shudder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyITEQDiJq4), from the Einhänder soundtrack. I feel this fits best if there are lesser mooks around to blaze through in addition to a single boss figure.

Another one I've never heard before. I like - nice choice. And I agree, definitely brings to mind a highly acrobatic, kinetic fight - with a party, that's easiest to achieve when dealing with an enemy mass rather than dogpiling on one.

Fortress of Doom (http://www.youtube.com/user/thaneofmacduff#play/all/favorites-all/2/GzBsFGh6zoc) from Lufia
Boss Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opZur_z-LNI) from SSBB
Aribeth Battle Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYEYDwMsdDQ&feature=PlayList&p=238484008C5CB518&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=18) from Neverwinter Nights
40:1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epeQwq-aYV0) by Sabaton (though the lyrics don't work so well for fantasy)
Doom Dragon Battle Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hsQDpCqxIg) from Golden Sun 2
just a few thoughts.

Fortress of Doom didn't really grab me. I think 16-bit and lower music has trouble grabbing me these days if it's not a tune I already know well.

The Subspace Emissary Boss Theme was pretty good, but I prefer Brawl's version of Final Destination (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyoR-Pg6o0c), myself. It's slightly less chaotic - and I love where the chorus ends and the guitar suddenly picks up 30 secs in.

I'd forgotten all about Aribeth's theme - and listening to it now, I'm struck by how much it sounds like the World of Warcraft (release, no exp. packs) logon screen music. It's pretty cool, and one of the few good things about the OC, though.

40:1 works anyway because the voice is deep, so if you're not focusing on it, it's not distracting. Reminds me a bit more of Epic Power-Up Music after the PCs have just rallied, though.

The only Golden Sun battle themes I really liked were Jenna's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgIjcGYmoyc)
and Isaac's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFMc40qxJK4). If you're going for Doom Dragon's, though, the SSBB version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTnJVNYCW6g)'s pretty good.

That Septette piece is incredibly rocking. That is one epic princess. Even if she is in a cute little pink number. Luna Dial is similarly high quality, but seems to be missing a little something to keep it up there with Septette. Alice's theme gets to me the most - it does a good job of 'subtly creepy' and 'fast paced', and I think it's better than Flandre's.

The rock remix version of Alice's theme is a bit behind, but very passable.

Necrofantasia... eh, something in it reminds of Dragonforce, and that's just not my thing.

Opera loses me almost instantly, sorry - no love for the first Parasite Eve song on that account, and the second just... it keeps up a high level of tension, but it feels more like chase music to me.

Masked Dedede (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey4JY8aox4E) from Kirby Super Star Ultra
Mr. Sandman Fight Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw6pwJRUYu8) from Punchout
The Dreadful Fight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvJkKwk8qYE) from Final Fantasy IV
The Last Battle Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZwYb5MP5Kc) from Final Fantasy II
Clash on the Big Bridge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtdQl6WuFeI) from Final Fantasy V
The Final Battle Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87Lzd724YcY) from Mario and Luigi RPG 3

Dedede's theme is extremely cool to start out with, but I've always felt it was too repetitive to keep up for very long, even the SSBB version. Mr. Sandman really works well for a final fight against a bruiser boss, for sure.

The only one of those Final Fantasy pieces I'm really digging is the one from 5, but again, it feels more like random encounter music to me than fight music. I'm not sure what it is, I've rarely been a fan of Uematsu.

I didn't know there was an M&L 3 - please tell me it's better than M&L:PiT, that was just... weak. The music's definitely decent.

Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse boss music, of course.

See my way earlier comment about 8-bit music. I'm usually harsh on it if I'm not already familiar with it for some reason, sorry. :(

That reminds me. Arkona.

This is the best one. Its nearly 8 minutes, and its a pretty good song.

I was loving it up until the people began talking. RAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH.

My usual suggestions:

Awe of She (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3BSSNxKjDk)

The Midnight Carnival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKJ9AVrpM9s&feature=related)

Keep In Gates (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyM3zU-_SNU)

Depending on the boss type.

The first two are a little too much indiscriminate guitar for me, I'm afraid. Keep In Gates, though, has definite potential for a vampire, werewolf or lich fight, I think. Not that I use any of those much, but blue moons and all.

Oh god, that was long. So, now for my own recommendations!

EPIC DOOM MUSIC
Carmina Burana, O Fortuna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvD0Vr-jt7Q) - Carl Orff
Perfect Cell Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpkeAQG6kQw&fmt=18) - Bruce Faulconer. I'm serious.

EPIC INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC

EPIC SAD MUSIC
Song of Healing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfyIGUl0emo) - Legend of Zelda, Majora's Mask. This is one of those 'battle in the rain' epic songs, though. Not fast.
Meaning of Birth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-AoP3NOja0&feature=related) - Tales of the Abyss Original Soundtrack
Aerodynamic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L93-7vRfxNs&fmt=18) - Daft Punk

Super Robot Wars has mecha drawn in chibi style - it often results in things that should be serious looking somewhat hilarious (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YANcvG8G9lA), at least until you get used to it.

More than a few of DragonForce's songs would fit quite well. And you won't have to loop them as much as some. :smalltongue:

Yeah, they just repeat the scale every second or so instead.

Don't know quite what you're looking for, so let's do this thing!

Agalloch - Our Fortress Is Burning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1aJPEFtoNg) is great for a very apocalyptic, hopeless feeling.

Anata - Entropy Within (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVF0GZg7wYQ). For super rough nasty brutality. Bonus points for the chorus actually including the lines "FIGHT! FIGHT THE ENEMY!", not that non-metalheads can understand it.

Death - Crystal Mountain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zguCFjHyVeM). Quite progressive, takes many turns, very dramatic and intense.

Basically anything from Enslaved's album 'Isa' would work. Or the whole album. You've got songs that start slow and relaxing but turn crazy intense, songs that are just plain out crazy intense, and songs that are intense while remaining kind of slow and relaxing. Somehow. Not going to link any because basically anything will work except the album intro (which is just, well, an intro).

Something by Moonsorrow will get you extra points. Tulimyrsky is 15 seconds shy of half an hour long, has intense parts and slow, speaking parts. It's particularly good because it's in finnish so unless you're in finland, the lyrics are unlikely to distract the players. Most of their songs (except their covers) are like that.

Primordial - No Nation On This Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UByD2fK_cCQ) is a bit of a different feel. Very final, very epic, not cheesy.

Swallow the Sun - Doomed To Walk The Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szMFNyxt-jU) is GREAT for inspiring hopelessness. Recommended for undead-themed BBEGs.

Transcending Bizarre? - Cell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxo565CSdvU&feature=PlayList&p=785F115A195FB0B6&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=67) followed by Infinite (conveniently immediately after on the playlist) is very dramatic, Avant-Gardey and different.

Lux Occulta - Architecture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f99vYawzrAc) has such intense parts it will BLOW YOUR MIND. And probably get people to screw up as they act more aggressively, yourself included.

Wintersun - Beautiful Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDcPt-hvkPo) might be what you're looking for. Varying tones inside the song, representing the ebb and flow of battle. I'd take Death's Crystal Mountain over this one, but this one DOES have a more epic and less desperate feel to it.

The Sun Rises (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRGv2_JnyVA) from Okami. An awesome, hope-filled theme for a battle against a boss in an oriental setting.

Battle for Everyone's Souls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdMhTL5bZrs), from Persona 3. Almost as classic as One-Winged Angel or Dancing Mad.

Darkness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5fdXtWUPkc), also from Persona 3. Less known, but still great against a dark and evil boss.

The Genesis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXyh_FbIia4) from Persona 4. Using this theme properly requires inhuman timing (listen to it all to understand why), but if you manage to pull that off, hoo boy.

In the frame where the Taurus and the two other mechs open fire, that's Tallgeese III, ReGZ (a nerfed version of Zeta Gundam) and the Taurus. The purple and freaky thing with the glowing eyes is berserk Eva-01.

I've played this SRW before (sadly can't get it to work anymore). I find it kind of cute that the Eva-01 seems to go "HAW HAW" whenever shots bounce off its barrier or it dodges.

Anyway, you see the portrait of EVA-01 at 0:35. (It's not piloted; it's just a close up of its face.)

I like The Almighty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qG8DUkn06-s) better than The Genesis, personally. I guess it's not all that Final-sounding, though.

Since Tengu recommended most of the good SRW final boss themes, allow me to suggest Trans-Am Riser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8H1XDDtGBM) or Decisive Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjjZl0yL0-g) from Gundam 00 and Carnage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICdZZVD48Uo) from the latest incarnation of Neon Genesis Evangelion (the actual "Final Battle" music in that series tends to be inappropriately calm). ...Actually scratch this one, it has English lyrics which is a recipe for disaster as far as mood goes.

Not to mention that End of Evangelion is, well, the end to Evangelion, so watching it alone is like watching the last few episodes of a plot-driven series without watching anything else from it before. In other words, the people who did that to you were very evil.

In all honesty, I think that this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j796bUK40hA) is a better rendition of Fortress of Doom, as the intro to Lufia: Legend Returns, but it's a bit less appropriate as battle music.

I prefer the Boss theme from Brawl, but I guess I like the higher chaos factor.

I can see what you mean about 40:1, and I agree that Aribeth's Battle Theme is very good - one of the things I like about it is it's flexibility. I know that a Dance with Rogues used it as the background music for a very militant city, and it sounds just as appropriate there.

Carmina Burana is certainly top-notch, definitely good build-up music. I'm not sensing that second one, though.

And I have no idea why that second quote isn't working.

Sleep, at the Bottom of the Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SfbFgFqt8w), aka Sleep, Within the Soil, aka HOLY CRAP DID ASTRANAGANT JUST CLAW ITS WAY OUT OF THAT THING AND SHOOT ME? Much better than the "real" final boss theme of that game, Dark Prison (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leRf0fNAYOw).

CHIMERA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ka5XqJoRthw), aka Theme of the Ultimate Internet Troll, from SRWZ. Not as distinctive as Dark Stranger, but still pretty epic.

I really like this girl's version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUsr_RgU_ps&feature=related) of the aforementioned World Revolution. (She also did One-Winged Angel but I won't dare mention that. :smallwink:) Good for when you're fighting world-devouring entities from beyond space and time.

I've been saving up Battlefield (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24wdmZoR-ko) from Cirque du Soliel's Ka album for a very primeval sort of final boss fight that I'll probably never run.

Although it has a mostly understated score, Suikoden III's Blade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcGpNRKgvp4) is a solid boss battle track, better than the actual final boss song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX6nBzvj4Eo&feature=related) I think. Seems fitting for a sword duel.

Would it be too trite to suggest Dies Irae (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_YSEbAWA0Y) from Mozart's Requiem? I mean if you're going to end up fighting a god anyway you may as well go all Day of Judgment on him.

I like the way you think, and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Let's start with Yuyuko. Good for a tragic final villain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCYrMS1ZTN8&feature=related).

Yukari's other theme, Night Falls ~ Evening Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3djECVO91sw&feature=related). You may be fighting for your life, but she's having fun!

Then there's Kanako's, Suwa Foughten Field (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWILyIg77ho). The Wind Goddess aims to please. And by "to please" I mean "massive barrages right at you."

Can't forget Mokou, either. Any fire-themed villain will like it! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_6mN0iYQuA)

I have a default set of recommendations whenever this question is raised.

Colossal, Dark Evil
The Escape - Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille Zur Macht (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhOGEsjBr4M)

Begins with a dark swell, then goes into erratic orchestra hits before joining the main, swooping brass theme. There's something big, something evil, and it wants to kill you.

Heroic Struggle
The Flame of Youth - DragonForce (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNy9F_JtiC4)

Slower, building intro ramps up into top-speed guitar flailing. This is the last battle, your foe has been brought down to your level and both sides race to the finish.

Supernatural Evil
Esper Battle - Final Fantasy XII (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqD1GsdnHBk)

Slow all the way, with a steady relentless drum and a choir that likes to remind you how doomed you are. This thing knows it's better than you and has all the time in the world to make you hurt.

Emotional
Nefertiti - Mana Khemia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5FMRpDhhko&feature=related)

Opens with a twinkly piano riff, then kicks into driving electric guitar to establish combat has been joined, before returning (still in combat mode) to the piano theme from before.

Majestic
Great Battle In The Vast Sky - Dragon Quest VIII (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VkVnwfLsiw)

Gets right to business establishing the presence of the entire symphony, then lets the intro lull for combat preparations. A warning horn call-and-response is your only warning that battle is about to be joined, and the mood shifts routinely from then on.

Other than that, most of my faves have already been mentioned.

Let's start with Yuyuko. Good for a tragic final villain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCYrMS1ZTN8&feature=related).

....that is the BEST. VERSION. EVER. Yuyuko's theme never really lent itself well to rock versions, IMO. Though UI-70's version is decent.

Yukari's other theme, Night Falls ~ Evening Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3djECVO91sw&feature=related). You may be fighting for your life, but she's having fun!

The version they used in 10.5 (the only game I've played) wasn't anywhere as good as this one. I really appreciated this one.

Then there's Kanako's, Suwa Foughten Field (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWILyIg77ho). The Wind Goddess aims to please. And by "to please" I mean "massive barrages right at you."

I love how it segues from thrash to piano. And how Sakuya lends herself well to being depicted as a guitarist.

Can't forget Mokou, either. Any fire-themed villain will like it! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_6mN0iYQuA)

Touhou is so fortunate to have people who make such awesome remixes of its music.

Disturbed - Indestructible (http://video.libero.it/app/play?id=fe3f845ad6e89770d52d1e788ca462a2) is good if you have a one man army as your boss fight

And I'm a little surprised nobody suggested this yet... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHH3O8OxaMw)

I never finished On the Rainslick Precipice. I just couldn't get into the game.

I'm going to suggest this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7Iy8H7cWNk&feature=channel_page&fmt=18)again though because it's awesome.

Therion's got some good songs that are mostly instrumental/choir

Eternal Return:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmSo1OFsBP0
Dark and looming song. It's slow throughout, but with a quick finale. Could be used for a transition into another song.

The Invincible:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWrT5TiTaXY
Sadish song, but with purpose. Good for a boss that has had some influence or action with the party before.

Via Nocturna:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBZsbKFs-j8
Long sword in the same vein as say, one winged angel (But less intense).

I'd have to go hunting for more from a different spot on my playlist, but Therion's got *toooons* of these songs.

This is just personal preference, but the Shin Megami Tensei series has always had good music to fit any occassion. Heck, alot of the music i use for my campaign comes from the SMT series. Here are some that i use.

Chaos theme (Shin Megami Tensei)- great for when the PCs come across eerie scenes or for horrifying or tense moments. Also good for introducing enemies for the first time.

Enemy Appearance (Shin Megami Tensei)- good mood music while rolling up initiative.

Fierce Battle (Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne)- good battle music for monsters you'll come across in battle.

Masura (Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne)- this theme is just so dark and majestic, perfect for the BBEG.

Kotowari Boss theme (SMT Nocturne)- perfect for fighting against powerful minions of the BBEG.

As for music to play when facing the head villain, here's some good ones: Boss Battle (SMT), Fiend boss battle (SMT Nocturne), the theme when fighting Nyx Avatar (Persona 3), Boss theme (SMT 2), and finally the Final Battle theme (SMT Nocturne)

No one has brought up Dancing Mad from FF6? Really? Easily amongst the most epic boss music ever composed:

Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ios6zLDR8AI)

Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MRGt_PvyT8&feature=related)

Just the sort of thing to fight a power mad nihilist clown god to.

EDIT: Oh wait, someone *did* mention it. Well, now you have links! Bonus!

Someone beat me to the BG2:ToB final boss music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCXMXflff8s&feature=related), but the sub-boss music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEv4v7uzxWE&feature=related)from that game has a life all its own. In its own way, it's at least its equal, and quite possibly my favorite fight music from any game.

Hey, anyone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vIxrBHLS88&feature=related)mentioned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR_s3BGLu0s&feature=related)Shadow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69io0J2wOBQ&feature=PlayList&p=66D4B2415893E905&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=22)of (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A10qew_PQlk&feature=PlayList&p=66D4B2415893E905&index=24)the (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5E_qpwPKEo&feature=PlayList&p=66D4B2415893E905&index=21)Colossus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUuo_PfcxN4&feature=related)yet?

Man, I really, really have to play that game again. I only played it once right after release. I finished Baldur's Gate I three times since then, but never got to play ToB. ^^

It deserves it. Yes, it's rushedish, yes, it has room for neither the tremendously entertaining "**** around exploring every scrap of woods on the Sword Coast/hobo's underground hidden closet of doom in Athkatla," yes, but it also takes your character to the point where you can go WAUGH and turn a fire giant into scrapple inside two rounds. Plus the music. And the ending(s).

(give it a minute)

Most things by Blind Guardian work pretty darn well, hard to go wrong.

For a pretty fast paced, high-action type song, Blood Sugar by Pendulum is great. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryTOjUJz1PM)

Before this thread dies, more Touhou:

Shikieiki's theme, done by the same artist who made that beautiful choral orchestrated version of Border of Life: 12 Yama of Xanadu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nYwHXJY-7s). This song literally gave me goosebumps when I heard it. And the battlecries! The battlecries!

This just unseated Rhapsody's Queen of the Dark Horizons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QP6EeEGeOc) as my final boss theme for Red Hand of Doom's Aspect of Tiamat.

Another remix of Alice's theme that sounds distinctively like an SNES RPG battle theme: Alice in the Wonderland. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKhJ1AC2ObI&feature=related)

Hate to double post, but I'd like to see this thread live on. D:

This song sounds a lot like something from NWN or Baldur's Gate, except it's high quality.

Although it comes from the game boss as one-winged angel, Birth of a God (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGHkjLhIpU8)

"The Road We Both Aim For" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccNEzGcs_k0) (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance) It's similar to the Esper Battle from FFXII.

The Incarnation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbgWXgVLF9A) (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance)

Keep In Gates, though, has definite potential for a vampire, werewolf or lich fight, I think. Not that I use any of those much, but blue moons and all.

Aha, so the insane one worked more for you than the epic ones. In that vein...

Good Manners and Customs, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eUAJYpwPSk) the theme of a guy who's possessed by 7 different entities at once, and

Holy Orders? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJqEGxlNHSQ&feature=channel_page) the theme for the evil robot duplicate of the leader of an order of paladins.

Is it just my group, or do other people's groups play unfitting music too?
Our showdown music has included
Invincible (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8lJYN3FfC0) by Pat Benatar
Take Me Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QM4dxI0mO1k) by Franz Fedrinand
They're Everywhere (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYDD7ycnYok) by Jim's Big Ego
and
It's the End of the World as We Know it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0GFRcFm-aY) by R.E.M. after we failed to beat the BBEG one time.

We have also had O Fortuna before (works perfectly) and Duel of the Fates. Unfortunately because the DM had his player on alphabetical order we got Dueling Banjos immediately after.

... one winged angel is perfect for all occasions...
Hemmm, I'd imagine it's a little cheesy and not what you want, but any of the other "fight" music from Advent Children is pretty good.
Till the End by The Living End

Blues Drives Monsters
Advice
I think I can
all by the Pillows, jolly good J-Pop and they're in FLCL so bonus points for that.

Hurricane by Bob Dylan, just cause...

The Tain by The Decemberists, 15min of epicness
Mariner's Revenge song by The Decemberists, I imagine it would be excelent if the campaign fit with the theme, if not then you should probably ignore it.

Fallin' by Dispatch
The Pretender by Foo Fighters
Won't Back Down by Fuel

Assassin
Knights of Cydonia
By Muse

Korobeiniki by Ozma, I mean really, who dosen't want to have their Final Boss battle to a rock version of the Tetris Theme Song
Game Over by Ozma, if things go badly

Jesus Christ Pose
The Day I Tried to Live
by SoundGarden

Down by Stone Temple Pilots
No Way Out

In the Garage by Weezer, not really Final Fight material but somewhat topical.

Erm ya, hope some of these are helpful,

A few suggestions:

Megalomania (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwtASYeer8Y) from Live-A-Live
Pure Odio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zA6hPgroebU) from the same game

Dark King Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORMeyEOmQaQ&NR=1) from FF Mystic Quest

Am Anfang blah blah blah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-8N41sC-4U) by E Nomine. Might work if you're in an Epic campaign and literally fighting a god.
