And now, to begin.......

As the sun sets on the Iron Barrel Tavern, the smell of ale hangs in the dimly lit room. You and your comrades sit at a table near the fireplace. Across the room an old Dwarvish man sits muttering to himself in the candle light. He glances over at you, gets up from his seat, and buys a drink. The Ragged old Dwarf then walks over to you and speaks in a skeptical manner. "it is not oft we get a group o' folks such as yerselves here at tha Iron Barrel... What are ye lookin' fer?"

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 07:43 PM
"Paradise, what else?" said Mort with a grin. He downed his drink, a strong one by the looks of it. "Until then, however, I'm looking for more tangible pleasures."

Cryssandra

"Tangible Pleasures eh?" The dwarf said... "I jus' may know what yer lookin fer... there is a place around here with treasures untold"
He pulls up a chair, his face becomes shadowed. "You remind me of m'self when i was younger. You may not know it, but this area is wrapped up in legend, though it is almost forgotten now......." The Dwarf takes a sip of ale and begins telling the legend....

Millennia ago, the celestials built a great dungeon. Within it, the celestials erected mammoth walls, locks, doors, and traps. It warded off those who would enter, but also walled in those who would escape; it was a dungeon larger than any ever known. Within it the celestials imprisoned hellish undead, demonic beasts, and fiendish monstrosities.

It was a perfect construction. Before the first dwarf would ever be born to sculpt stone, angels and celestials carved a work of art that no one would ever see. Perfect in every detail, it would stand inviolate for thousands of years. But none can say why the gods ordered demons and liches to be entombed and not destroyed. And in time, the gods would rue their mercy.

Centuries passed and the tomb stood unchanged. The champions who protected humanity from the liches and hezrou and pit fiends stood vigilant guard, ready to spend eternity in honor of the gods. But time passed over the celestials. The world forgot its heroes. Even the heavens turned a blind eye to the angels, inevitables, and guardians serving out their destiny entombed in the earth.

An Earthquake cracked the foundation of the dungeon. The rift spread for miles, nearly ripping the dungeon in two. Into the rift flowed magma, but it did not boil the occupants of the dungeon. The temperature rose beneath the earth, and the cold home of the unliving became capable of sustaining life.

It was not long before the Derro came. They made their homes among the rocks and tombs. Many of the traps set through the dungeon had been triggered, and creatures that the celestials had sworn to entomb eternally had escaped. In time, more subterranean creatures would make their homes in the rock. All the while, celestials contained the truest evils in the heart of this prison.

Then another earthquake pushed jagged earth through the dungeon floor, destroying a large portion of its foundation. Driders and Drow dug beneath the rock and rubble to make their homes. The same earthquake tore a hole in the ceiling and flying beasts like Arrowhawk and Belker perched on the highest plateaus of their underground sanctuary.

As the dungeon's population grew, so did the celestials' fear that mankind would be destroyed by its inhabitants. Two titans made the long journey into the mountains and stood guard at the entrance and exit to the tombs in eternal vigil.

"Paradise, huh?". The tall man rises his head, smiling. "Isn't it a bit over the top?".
Addressing the dwarf
"Allester is the name, if you care. As for me, I'm here looking for a humanoid face. Wilderness wears people off, if you ask me."

"That dungeons seems a pretty uncomfortable place to be. Why d'ya say it may be what we're looking for?

"Paradise? Treasures?" The elf of flame noted with severe skepticism. He found himself seated across from the warriors, and peeking from just above a book of, what some may believe to be, as blasphemy. "Rather fleeting desires don't you think? I seek not of power in the physical kind, but within the mental domain.
"Knowledge is Power, said a wise man. That, very real power is what I seek."

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 08:30 PM
"A dungeon, eh?" said Mort, appraising the ranger closely. "You look like you've seen and done things. You reckon' we can tackle that? We're going to need more people, though."

The elf caught his notice. "Ah, but the fact that it is fleeting makes it all the more exciting!"

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 08:34 PM
Directed to the elf: "Knowledge? This place was built by the celestials! Its interior has never been seen by any of the civilized races eyes!" The dwarf laughed a hearty laugh "Dont ye see... this place holds knowledge left behind by the heavens!"

2009-07-20, 08:40 PM
" Well, seeing as how I have nothing else to do at the moment, I think this dungeon would be an interesting challenge."Ican says with delight, " I say we should go to this celestial dungeon."

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 08:41 PM
"Aye, the lad has his thoughts straight..."

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 08:45 PM
"Huh, interesting," said Mort with grin. "We're in no shortage of volunteers. How fortuitous for all us to gather in this very tavern. This must be a sign." He smiled.

Mort Nebel stood up in his seat, and said at the top of his voice, "Anyone heard that? Anyone willing? Come'o'ere and we'll plan this whole thing out!"

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 08:48 PM
"So, yer goin' into this 'ere dungeon? well...." The dwarf stood up... "Yer gonna need a guide to this dungeon.... It seems I am the only one who knows the way...."

bue52
2009-07-20, 08:53 PM
"And you are willing to do this for free?"Ican asks a little suspicious about the offer being to good to be true.

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 08:56 PM
"Aye... Fer free..." The Dwarf pauses... "But should ye come back alive.... Ye wouldn't mind givin' a poor ol' dwarf a share would ye?"

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 08:57 PM
"If this dungeon is as treasure-filled as you say it is," said the cleric of the Gray God. "We'll give you more than a 'fair' share."

Something of a shadow of a wicked grin passed through the sharp visage of the flame elf. His stance, even as he sat told of an education beyond that of the Church disciples. A strict regiment combined with a vast knowledge had been pounded into his mind. His attire told that of royalty wanna-be, with the readiness of what would be, a Boy Scout. Sans the amass of items adorning his body.

"Why not? Figure if there's anything in there..." He paused mid-thought. "Count me in."

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 08:59 PM
The Dwarf's face lit up, he stood up. This he said with renewed vigor." Then ye 'ave yerselves a guide! Though, I can only take ya as far as the entrance...." he sat down again. "Tha creatures 'ave been escapin' tha first sector of the dungeon lately..."

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 09:02 PM
"Can't expect things to start easy, after all," the gray cleric said. "Though we should wait until we've discussed the whole thing with everyone."

bue52
2009-07-20, 09:08 PM
"I say we go, ASAP." Ican says, " If these monters run amonk, many innocent people may be killed."

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 09:12 PM
"The lad may have a point... But ye really should get a plan... these creatures are different than others...

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 09:13 PM
"Hmm, blindly go into a dungeon that we have no knowledge of with absolutely no forethought, which may very well result in out untimely deaths?" said Mort Nebel. "I like your style."

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 09:16 PM
"Yer insane, but if ye must..." the dwarf walks across the room, picks up his bag and staff then comes back. "I'll take ye."

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 09:21 PM
"It was a joke," said Mort Nebel. "Sit down, and we'll think this through."

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 09:24 PM
The dwarf sits down, a little dissapointed... "The Legend says that the dungeon is guarded by titans... It could make it problematic if they are still at their posts..."

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 09:39 PM
"This is exactly why we should relax," said the cleric. "Everyone sit down, and we'll plan this through. Old man, tell us what you know of these creatures. Specifically."

The elf of flame paused for a moment, pondering the possible outcomes, and the various ways of death that could happen. In the end, he figured that the risk would perhaps be worth it. "How about we just go there, scout it out, and if it's all safe, wait for some more allies to show?"

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 09:41 PM
"I only know that they were sent by the celestials to guard tha dungeon centuries ago.... I have never seen them m'self, so i cannae tell ya much more about them..."

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 09:55 PM
"Hmm, why not?" said the cleric. He left instructions for those who would be willing in this dungeon crawl to meet them somewhere close to the dungeon proper. With everything cleared, he turned to the dwarf and said: "Lead on, old man. Show us your monsters."

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 10:02 PM
The Dwarf grinned... "Off we go!"

The Dwarf Led you out the Iron Barrel Inn and out of the town...
You are out on open plains you can see mountains in the distance, you walk on for a few hours and arrive about a half mile away from a mountain....

The dwarf stops "See that mountain up ahead? At the top is where i believe the entrance to be..." he longingly looks up at the mountain... "I wish i were younger, i would love to go into the dungeon..... anyway... Should we press on?"

Sighing, Allester nods.

"As you wish. This has turned to be a suicide mission at any rate. You should be more careful, in your next lives, kids.
As for me... I have lived enough, anyway...

Still, we're always in time to go back to town, for reinforcements."

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 10:30 PM
"Of course, of course," said the cleric. "Lead on."

Cryssandra
2009-07-20, 10:30 PM
"I'll take ye to the base of the mountain and return to town... I'll alert any adventurin types of your whereabouts and send 'em on up. The Entrance is at the top."

The Dwarf leads you a half mile ahead to the base of the mountain and turns back....

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-20, 10:55 PM
"So, what do you say, lads?" said the cleric. He sat down, and sighed. "Should we pressed forward, or...?"

"Going back wouldn't have point right now, would it? I say we press on and see what happens. I mean, what's the worst that can happen, right?"

Smiling at his comrades what he hopes in encouraging smile, Damien nods his head ahead.

"Well then, who wants to scout ahead?"Ican asks the rest of the group.

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-21, 11:05 AM
"Hmm, I really don't know what we're all capable of," said the cleric to the group. "Why don't we sound off, huh? I'll start, I suppose. Cleric, here. So I'm not really the scout-y type."

Hauntingly a song floats around the group, filling the air with its melody.

Act of nature, act of god
Raging through our sedentary lives
We are on the brink
We are floundering
Spinning in this dark and rising tide

The storm has blown this great big beauty down
The branches all confusion on the ground
I've watched it grow and thought I knew it well
I never dreamed I'd see the day it fell

So bolt the door, seal the cracks
Close your eyes don't look back
Hold your ears tight against the roar
Someone said I should hear
Warning cries soft and clear
Whispered in the calm before the storm

OOC (His singing will be in purple.)

If one were to look up, they would see a man lounging on a tree branch. Looking over, the man starts and falls backwards out of the tree.

Umph!, standing up and brushing himself off. "Why hello there, the name is Lucius. What brings you to the mountain?"

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-21, 12:14 PM
"Eternal happiness," said the cleric. "But we'll settle for ancient treasure."

HereticNox
2009-07-21, 12:19 PM
"To be eternally happy is a pretty lofty goal. Still it seems like eternal happiness would be bland."

His brow furrows slightly, "This is my home, and I am quite fond of it. Is your treasure gathering going to hurt the mountain?"

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-21, 12:29 PM
"Oh, my dear, minstrel," said the cleric. "We will not harm the mountain. I am after all a pacifist, and also have great respect for the natural world. We will merely unburden this ancient dungeon with its alluring treasures, so that it will no longer attract the attention of any would-be adventurer. Thereby not only saving the lives of those who would fail, but keep this mountain from being harmed."

Damien

Listening to others, Damien pipes in all of a sudden.

"The name's Damien, ladies and gentleman! Well... more gentleman, really. I have yet to spot a lady around here... Anyway! My skills are many and I hope that I can serve this party by doing what I do best... break a few locks, open a few chests, you know that kind of thing. Hopefully, we can find some adventures as well as some treasures in this dungeon here."

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-21, 06:25 PM
"Well, come on then," said the cleric. "Onward, lads!"

Cryssandra
2009-07-21, 06:32 PM
As you climb the mountain, rocks and debris slow your ascent. Numerous tracks of different creatures ascend the hillside. the climb levels off as you get closer to the mouth. You see a man the size of a galleon lying on the ground at the cave opening. As you get closer you can see that death has taken him. Despite his obviously decomposed state, the man does not exude the odor of decay.

OOC
What relevant skill should I roll for this?

Cryssandra
2009-07-21, 07:02 PM
It is the body of a Titan, one of the guards placed at the entrances of the dungeon centuries ago.

There are no signs of struggle.

Upon closer inspection you see that he has a gargantuan Halberd and a huge chain shirt.

"I'm guessing this can't be a good sign. Anybody has any ideas how to progress from here?"

Nebuchadnezzer
2009-07-21, 07:17 PM
"Hmm," said the cleric, turning to the group. "Seems to be one of those titans guarding the entrance that old dwarf said. Good news is we're here. Bad news is the thing that did this might be here as well."

"Hardly a spoil of war." Scoffed with an off-hand remark. Despite the size, despite the prospect of dragging something into the realms of humans, it was hardly anything to get. If nothing else, it was a good monument. "Keep it there, it is a good landmark for any whom may passby."

Mordokai

"Aye-aye sir!"

Damien closes the entrance of the dungeon and looks it up and down, pulling his fingers up and down the entrance, looking for something suspicious.

You exit the dark and dank passageway to emerge onto a worked stone floor. Looking about, you see that you have entered a large square chamber hewn completely from stone. You notice two Iron doors, one to your side, and the other in front of you. Otherwise there are no other features of interest in the stone.

OOC:

Wow, almost to the end of page two and we are finally in room A1

"Regardless, let us just go forward. The only way we can go, right? Should we turn towards a dead end, we may just turn around and chose the opposite door." The elf noted watching his surroundings. Both walls, ceiling, and floors alike were now open to suspicion.

How's our visiblity looking?

Cryssandra
2009-07-22, 01:45 AM
As you push the door, the edge disappears into a blackness that lies just beyond. You allow the door to open completely and watch as more and more of it is swallowed up in the barrier until only its hinges are visible. Peering cautiously into the darkness for signs of movement, you see nothing. Even your ears can only detect the breathing of your fellow adventurers. The dark space reveals nothing of what lies beyond.

Stumbling through the gloom and gibbering incoherently to himself, a Gnome staggers towards the door in an attempt to escape the madness within the dungeon and himself. Upon seeing the group, he stops, tilts his head at a weird angle, and examines the newcomers. Suddenly straightening up and smoothing his hair, he speaks in an unexpectedly happy tone, "Hi!"

"So, um, welcome to the dungeon. Hope you like it here. You know, because, that was a one way door. Yep, can't go back that way. Nope, nosiree. Can't be done."

Damien gives the elf a stern look.

The gnome stands back muttering to himself waiting for someone else to open the door.

So, let's see here, we've five hundred feet of rope, at approximately eight ounces per cubic inch, though we're looking at a bit of decay, so let's say seven point five ounces per. Yep, we've got a good one hundred pounds of rope here. Let's see, adding up this, carry the two, divide by... yes. I can carry a bout two hundred fifty feet of this without becoming overburdened. That would give you a hefty fifty pounds to carry, which judging by your musculature would put you just over the level by which you would consider yourself to be only lightly burdened. As such, I shall suffer and carry an extra few feet of rope, lowering your burden to a mere forty pounds, which shouldn't trouble you at all. In fact..." His face taking on a fierce look, Lucius strikes viciously with his longsword. Hoping to rend the darkmantle in two.

That's 5 points of damage

The Crushed and mangled form of the Darkmantle becomes visible as the light returns.... The Orcs in the corner at the far end of the room had seen the combat and threw an item at you saying:
You need this more than we do... There are more of them around here.... Strike from the ceiling they do.... *cough*

The Item is quite obviously a healing potion....
It heals 1d10 points of damage to 2 people

One of the Orcs decides to give you one last piece of advice...
Remember... Watch the ceilings...

HereticNox
2009-07-24, 04:52 PM
"Indeed I would. It would be sung in every tavern across the land. An epic tune of the glorious Orcs, and their victory over the world's greatest Dungeon. All things pass away, but fame never dies."

Still Lucius really didn't believe those words. Looking at the orcs, henotes their serious condition and quickly whispers to Damien "Maybe it would be better to let them take care of everything around here. They are to injured to be of any use in a fight. Obviously going further in, would be suicide. I would give them the potion and let them leave or accompany us, but we are going further in correct? I have a feeling that every ounce of healing will be very valuable. Just best to let them be. "

As the Orc gave his final word of advice, Lucius bows his head, "Thank you for your kindness.". With that Lucius heads further into the abyss.

Mordokai
2009-07-24, 04:55 PM
"I figure you have a point. It's a shame leaving them here just like that, but we have ourselves to think of first, that much is true."

Giving the orcs one last bow, Damien heads down the corridor.

"I assume we have a long way to travel. The sooner we start, the better."

Frowning slightly at the spectacle and lamenting his own lack of abilities to aid the orcs, Ican turns towards the path they are heading and begins to take the first step, away from the orcs. Taking their advice seriously, Ican occasionally looks up to the ceiling wary of other possible monstrosities.

"Hey guys, wait up." A brash young man comes bolting through the last door you passed through. The only thing that overshadows his eagerness is the ridiculously large sword strapped to his back. Alvaro

It had taken a long while for Alvaro to catch up. Luckily for him he had light, and his elven eyes to get him to where he needed to be. Even if the others were going at normal pace, he was going at half-pace trying to collect data, and categorize each creature encountered. This, he found, was quickly putting him further and further in to the back ranks. It did not help that with each new room it seemed his last meal wanted to come up for a second, third, and maybe a sixth taste--or a secondary glance.

"No one light a match..."

Suddenly noticing the human for the first time, Razade turns and approaches him. Taking a piece of chalk and 2 foot piece of rope out of his pack, Razade begins to "measure" different aspects of the human while writing cryptic notes on the ground.

"Hmm, yes, yes. Uh oh. That's not good. Well, let's seeeeee... Uh huh. Yep... Eh, that'll do. Nope nope, terrible."

Razade sighs heavily and shakes his head.

"I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid we just don't have your size available. I could sell you an ill fitting suit, but that wouldn't do. I suppose I could custom make one for you too, but it'll take at least two weeks and will triple the normal cost. Also, I'll need payment up front, at least half down. Well, what say you?
