Orlando Bloom as Elan? Heh, I don't think I've heard that one before. I could actually see it. XD

Good castings, in general, though I've seen a few better candidates for Roy mentioned in other threads... but I'll be damned if I can recall the names, so I'll just let them resurface here on their own.

It always amuses me, however, when people insist on casting either blatant men or quite obviously old women to play a frickin' elf. I mean, Tilda Swanton is what, almost fifty? I see Cate Blanchett as a far more likely candidate. Or even Keira Knightley if it comes to that, if she can stop pouting for a moment.

I was looking for someone fairly Androgynous for V and Tilda Swanton fit the bill

how about Hillery Swank or maybe Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Some really interesting choices there, and a far better job than I could have done! Easier to say which one I agree wholeheartedly with, but where would the discussion be in that?!

Chiwetel Ejiofor would be a good choice for Roy, in my opinion; an actor who has pulled off a huge variety of roles, and delivered quality every time.

I think Tilda Swanson is a good choice; she could certainly play an ambiguous/androgynous character to perfection; and if she looks a little old..well, that's what the make-up department is for. Not to mention those nice CGI people. And V is the oldest of the Order anyway, so I see no real problem there.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Scarlett Johannsson, but realize I'm probably in a minority there. I'd prefer to see Jewel Staite (who played Kaylee in Firefly/Serenity) in the role of Haley.

Jonathan Rhys Myers might be good for V, or possibly Belkar; though may be a little too...intelligently sinister to play the witty halfling thug.

I think Ang Lee might be a little too old for O-Chul. Would Chow Yun Fat be too obvious? Given the kind of characters he tends to play, I could buy him surviving an acid shark attack, but would keep expecting him to pull an Uzi.

PS Jackie Chan as Shojo? Stroke of genius!!

As to the first bit: I'll wait and see how she does as Black Widow in Iron Man II.

But as for the second: eeee.....

Also: I too think Chow Yun Fat would be an amazing O-Chul.

eee as in yay?!?!? :smallwink:

If I had my way, I'd probably try to shoehorn as many of the Serenity crew into the cast as I could; Adam Baldwin as Belkar, Summer Glau as Thog, Nathan Fillion as Guy With Halbard...Kaylee as Haley is better than these suggestions and has the added bonus of rhyming.

I was originally going to bemoan how this has been done to undeath, but this is actually a really good casting call!

Jackie Chan as Shojo threw me off tho haha.

I had your choice of V was an interesting/good one. With the right wardrobe, quite androgynous indeed.

Perhaps Leonardo Di Caprio as Elan/Nale as he's the cute loveable little goodlooker, but only gets oscars when he's the bad guy (Blood Diamond). And O-chul Should be Keano Reaves (For his calm way of killing people in the Matrix Trilogy) or the guy who plays Elrond in Lotr and Mr Smith in the Matrix.

Your 'Other Characters' section is perfect, but I'm not so sure Keke Palmer would be doing the line 'Hey, look at the girl who's got boobs here!' considering she's in Disney Channel or whatever.

Another one of these, huh? Ok.

I like Tyrese Gibson as Roy. That's one of the better calls I've seen for that character. I'm a firm believer in Hilary Swank as Haley (and equally firm in NOT Jewel Staite as Haley). Tilda Swinton is a good call for V.

I choose to assume you stole the ideas for Miko and Julio Scoundrel from me. And the idea for O-Chul from the same guy I stole it from.

All in all, not a bad casting job.

Durkon Thundershield Brian Blessed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Blessed)

Somehow missed this before. It is amazing in its beautiful nonsensicality. Because, damn it, if Durkon can't get any plots or real characterization besides "lol dwarf lol" (and a few strips where he proves he's a good listener), at least he can be an inexplicably Large Ham.

Who is short.

Hm. That picture brings to mind a good question; why doesn't Haley wear lockpick-earrings? Heh. I was thinking "Haley would never wear earrings that large", and hot on the heels of that thought was "...unless they doubled as lockpicks or something."

Granted, maybe dangly earrings would just look bad on her, especially with the shorter hair. Could someone do a mock-up, maybe?

I just don't think a live-action movie.

An animated movie (ala Pixar or the guys who did Caroline Coraline), I think, would work much better.

Not that I have any idea on who would play who, but just throwing that out there.

What? If you're not going the live action route, why bring in the third dimension at all? OotS's major appeal is its simplistic two-dimensional look.

- Scarlet Johannsson is far too flawless, while being not, well, cool enough to be Haley. Amanda Righetti would be a better choice, though I have a hard time imagining her as a streetwise rogue, especially since I am used to her as a pious supersticious police officer. Jewel Staite, on the other hand...

- Eugene Greenhilt is Morgan Freeman, hands down. And I can't imagine a better Horace Greenhilt than SL Jackson... or Mr. T. ;)
Roy, on the other hand, is hard to visualize. I would have said Denzel Washington, but he's too old now and usually isn't bald, so I stick with Michael Jace instead.

- Michael Chilkis as Redcloak :D

Roy: Mehcad Brooks from True Blood

Haley: Ellen Page from Juno

Those two are too beautiful to be Haley... she's supposed to be good-looking, but not stunning.

As you said though, on the other hand, Kaylee I mean Jewel would make a great Haley, IMO.

And before anyone thinks I'm too Firefly-biased (considering the post I just made before this one), well, let me state right now that there isn't anyone else from the cast that I think would fit in a OotS movie. :)

Orlando Bloom as Elan, huh?

Is it just me, or does it seem like every time there is a "pick the cast for (insert fantasy-themed title) movie" Orlando Bloom shows up on the list?

He played Legolas, yes. He did an okay job, yes. BUT if he were to be cast as any number of characters that I've seen him suggested to play (Drizzt, Elan, Par Ohmsford) then all I would see is just Legolas in a different outfit.

I think a vast majority of the choices for the cast were really good. Especially the guy who played Simon Adebisi for Zz'dtri. Awesome.

Just... please... no more LotR actors for fantasy roles... unless its Sir Ian McKellen as Elminster. And even that is pushing it.

And Meriadoc Brandybuck (Monaghan) is a FAR CRY from Belkar Bitterleaf, aka "The Belkster", aka "Death's Lil Helper." Monaghan couldn't pull of the psychotic tendencies needed to play Belkar. Hell, he tries to play a serious role in that "Flash Forward" show and he just seems downright goofy... and not hobbit-goofy. I mean awkward-goofy.

Well, I've been lurking a bit, actually kind of afraid of the forum rules... ;)

But, I cannot resist a good pipe dream casting thread. I made one for the 1987 game Wasteland on the Snake Squeezins forum, and I did a Heroes 'recast' on my blog a while back (http://dharmabeatdown.wordpress.com/2008/12/03/just-like-undead-heroes/). Which you should check out, it is funny, and also because you can see that I dislike conventional casting ideas.

So, in that vein, here is draft one of my OotS movie casting. Note that since this is fantasy anyway, the actors may or may not be cast at their current age. Suggestions in this vein for further characters are completely welcome.

Roy- Michael Jai White
Elan- David Duchovny
Haley- Laura Prepon
V- David Bowie
Belkar- Jackie Earle Haley
Durkon- Gerard Butler
Xykon- Christopher Walken
Redcloak- Chris Parnell
MitD- Giovanni Ribisi
Tsukiko- Bailey Jay
Eugene Greenhilt- Erik King
Horace Greenhilt- Richard Roundtree
Nale- David Duchovny
Sabine- Mila Kunis
Thog- George Fisher
Miko- Jenny Shimizu
Hinjo- Claude Maki
Shojo- Ted Danson
Ochul- Takeshi Kitano
Blackwing- Gilbert Gottfried
Mr. Scruffy- George Clooney
Celia- Lady Gaga
Tarquin- Billy Connoly
Malack- Morrissey

good choices but personaly i would say Jackie Chan for O-Chul/chlu how ever you spell it

for hayley starshine, yeah i'll go with Jewel State from firefly aswell, she does have a pretty tight body.

for Elan theres a fan club out there dedicated to some actor to play elan, i can't remember his name but he's the guy from the harold and kuma movie series and was the psychic guy in starship troopers.

Olando Bloom, urk, if that ever happened i would kill myself.

Bill Nightyl as Xykon i don't see the appeal there myself and i will admit i saw bill nightly in zombie land he's not looking to good these days

i see you put jackie chan down as lord shojo i would say the asian pirate guy from the pirates movie he was also in tropic thunder, i don't know his name.

I'm not going to comment on the other suggestions, but this is the only suggestion that matters:

HALEY = AMANDA RIGHETTI

A bit of a joke suggestion, but I raise you another redhead who isn't an actress, but already (almost) shares Haley's name. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayley_Williams)

In all seriousness, though, I remain steadfast in my conviction that, while #406 would be awesome in live action, as a whole I don't think it would work - a repeat of the fiasco that is "The Last Airbender" with attempts at humor added. (I've never really seen either show or movie, but every ad I see makes me cringe.)

Going by looks alone (and not acting talent)

Sabine - Megan Fox isn't black. Find any gorgeous black actor in her 20s and you've pretty much got it for Sabine (Sabine's also sort of the 'offensively hot' not 'adorable hot' like Megan Fox; think of a bodacious prostitute from Sin City who is also suave and smooth).

Belkar - Replace that with Joe Pesci (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Pesci). Think of him as short and with a bare buzz cut and scary and laughs at his own jokes (he was scary as hell in goodfellas :smalleek:). In fact, he's a very good actor (but I don't see him doing a comedy scene. He probably knows how to do comedy. He probably prefers highly realistic political comedy or a heavy realistic brand of situational comedy; essentially anything martin scorsese or Robert De Niro would enjoy. He might consider this comedy light hearted and not unique in the sense that it is in reference to a tabletop game).

Miko - Perfect choice. Especially with long hair.

Lord Shojo - Jackie Chan? Lord Shojo looks nothing like him. Find some very serious looking old asian man who'd look fine with long hair and a long flowing mustache and then picture him acting senile. What he says is supposed to make the audience laugh, not what he looks like. Also note that the audience isn't supposed to look at things from Roy's perspective. Roy and the order aren't the protagonists of the story - they're just the ones the story tends to keep up with the most.

Julia Greenhilt - She's kinda old. Compared to Roy's actor, it'd make no sense. I'm thinking, mildly attractive to attractive black teenager (or someone in their early 20s that looks a heck of a lot like a teenager within 5 years) - typically someone from mainstream. It plays up the humor a bit more that they really are close to the age that they are portraying.

Monster in the Darkness - Robin Williams? :smallsigh: Seriously, if we're doing voices, Monster in the Darkness has to sound very natural and not hyperboli on ecstasy. Like a natural juvenile. Maybe Seth Mcfarlane. Dan Castalleneta. Etc.

I don't know....

I have a soft spot for James Earl Jones as the voice of the MitD. Not the usual work for his commanding voice, I'll be the first to admit, but it could work. The MitD acts juvenile, but with the constant undertones of being ever so much more dangerous it doesn't have to sound like a natural juvenile. Just hink of James Earl Jones saying "Awwww" or "Cookies!". It could work - I am sure of it. :smallcool:

EDIT: Now, if I could only find a way to smuggle Kenneth Branagh, Patrick Stewart, and Brian Blessed into the cast.... but they'd have a hard time not stealing the scenes from the lightweights of the glitter generation and don't really seem strong matches for any of the roles, so perhaps not. OTOH, a Stewart Xykon-Branagh Redcloak duo would be awesome...

Dule Hill as Redcloak. I'm not too committed to the idea, as I think he's got the deadpan military aspect of Redcloak's personality down, but I don't know if he could manage the charisma and emotion of the character.

I'd rather this be the voices of the characters, and like, have everything drawn like an old Disney movie, except with stick arms and legs. It'd be like, the first 3 books and each panel would just be 2-5 actions and there would be voices, of course. Each panel would move off to the left and a new strip comes on from the right.

Elan- David Duchovny

Really? I can't see it in terms of acting strengths or physical portray.

Xykon- Christopher Walken

I still think William Defoe is the best choice for Xykon. Tell me you didn't love him as the Green Goblin.

Nale- David Duchovny

See my explanation for Elan.

Sabine- Mila Kunis

No one besides Megan Fox is right for that role. She practically is Sabine, and I think we all know why.

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you on that one. All Megan Fox brings to a character is her figure.

Sabine is more than just sex appeal. She's intelligent and more than a little ruthless and has her own motives and schemes. If she were just a flat character, I would say "Sure, why not?" but because Sabine is more than just a sex kitten, I disagree vehemently. Maybe if Megan Fox were to mature as an actress and person I would agree, but as of right now: no, just no.

If the time/space continuum weren't an issue, I think a young Eartha Kitt would make a good Sabine.

An andogynous, mid-20s East-asian would make an interesting V.
In an animated film it would be harder to decide what art style, there could be the same, or it could be closer to an anime, or it could be american-cartoon Fairly odd parents... I wouldn't know.

Ps: What about Lindsay Lohan? I may just be into her because of the recent Lindsay-movie-marathon I had with a friend, but I could tottally see her doing any female roll. Haley, Sabine, Miko... ok, maybe not Roy's sister, but at least those three would work.

Meh. He's significantly younger than 80, and Shojo only acted crazy whereas Mr. Depp's characters genuinely were. And, for me at least, the most memorable Shojo scenes were those were he didn't act crazy, but showed insight and discussed tactics, so it would be a waste of resources. Plus he's such a high-profile actor that he'd probably steal the show. And he is not of Asian heritage.

So in conclusion, no, I don't think Johnny Depp would fit as Lord Shojo.

Also: Have I not noticed it, or has this thread really gone to five pages without one suggestion of Samuel L. Jackson as Roy? Look, I know the man's acting range isn't great and he's getting a little long in tooth. But he would be hilarious.

"Elan, hand me my club. It's the one that says 'Bad Mother Fighter' on it."

I think Samuel L. Jackson is a bit old for Roy, but he'd be good as Roy's grandfather. Also, Morgan Freeman as Roy father.

I was leaning more towards Danny Glover for Roy's father.

Morgan Freeman...can be...I have no idea...

I think Danny Glover would be more fitting as Roy's grandfather, personally. Idk, he just seems a bit too much of a tough guy to be a wizard. But then, I only know his work from the lethal weapon series, so that might be why.

Patrick stewart would be a good Tarquin, but then we run into the fact that there aren't really any young actors I know of who could pass as a younger version of him. Remember, the twins are supposed to look almost exactly like him.

I've been giving this some thought, and I think Eugene should be played by Bill Cosby just for that single joke in SoD. And old pre-lich Xykon should be played by Creed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creed_Bratton) Bratton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creed_Bratton_(character)).

Also Neil Patrick Harris MUST be in there somewhere, how can you go this epic and not have him anywhere? Any ideas who to cast N.P.H as guys?

I've always felt that NPH could easily tackle the role of Elan/Nale. We know he can play eccentric and nice as well as brutal but ridiculous. Barney's scheming from How I Met Your Mother can sometimes resemble Nale's, but aimed towards sex rather than revenge.

It doesn't really make that much sense to cast someone for one joke (not to mention a joke in the prequel which I doubt the films should start with).

This I agree with very much. I think NPH would be a great choice for Elan/Nale.

...And any director worth a damn would likely do the same.

I think that, possibly (although that would definitely stretch the workload on the poor actor), whoever plays Elan/Nale should play Tarquin, with age-appropriate makeup. As it has been said, it appears that Tarquin looks "just like Elan", only with some extra years on him (and is still very good-looking, according to Haley, who says something like "at least we know that, down the road, you will still be handsome").

Lots of green-screen work, of course, but them's the breaks......

Good idea. A bit like Janeway and Future Janeway in Star Trek Voyager- only with a bigger age gap.

Going on this vein, I think it would turn out a lot better if it were animated - Elan and Nale could have the same voice actor if this were the case. Tarquin could easily be played by a relative of whomever voices Elan/Nale.

I was going to suggest Christopher Lloyd be Xykon - simply because he kinda sounds like how I imagined, and can be both witty and completely evil, much like the lich - but then I saw the William Dafoe idea. That definitely works better.

I also think that Kubota could be done by Alan Rickman. Yes, he's not Asian, but if the movie were animated, we wouldn't really have that problem, and we could have a Kubota that sounds like Snape

For some reason when I think of this I always think of it as a CG-animated movie with Nathan Fillion voicing Roy

*clears throat*

Julio Scoundrel - William Shatner.

Let the awesome sink in.

Slowly.

Also, Brian Blessed as Durkon? No. Durkon has low charisma. Brian Blessed has tons of charisma. His wikipedia page even says so.

No, Brian Blessed would play someone else in OOTS.

THOR.
