View Full Version : A vague question

I have a vague and ill-defined question for the Playground. I have an extremely vague class concept, and want to know if a class or Prc exists that fits the mold. If nothing resembles my ramblings, than any suggestions as how to make such a class would be appreciated.

My idea is non-magical artisan. Someone who makes or designs things without using magic. Constructs, siege weapons, traps, ships, anything like that. A class that could use high ranks in Knowledge: Architecture and engineering.

Any ideas?

Expert with crafts skills is all I can think of for such a concept.

What do you want to do with him?

Do with him?

Nothing in particular; yet. At the moment I want to see what I can find that fits my loose description. From there, not sure what I'll do.

How are you making constructs without magic?:smallconfused:

There's the Combat Trapsmith PrC, for making traps viable, but most of the time craft is an NPC skill, and magic does it better (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/fabricate.htm).

How about an artisan that is not so flashy with magic like Artificer or Effigy Master. And you can always re-fluff "magical" construct to "mechanical" construct

Unless your campaign is steampunk or some kind of Modern d20, it's hard to get away from the "magic" in D&D or rather mechanics that are based on "magic".

That being said maybe you can rework a d20 Modern class like Field Scientist or Techie (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/msrd/msrdadvancedclassesI.rtf) to fit your campaign.

Constructs who use machinery rather than magic would be cool.

If you just want to build stuff, that's what Craft is for. But that's not much to have a PC off of, so I was wondering.

Artificer is Eberron Campaign Setting and Player's Guide to Eberron.

Artificer is an Eberron base class as was mentioned and Effigy Master is a Prc from the Complete Arcane. You can checkout summaries of the classes here http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/index.php

I once ran an NPC gnome with this "Tinker" homebrew class:

Could be kinda sorta what you're looking for...

Isn't there a Rune something class in Races of Stone for Dwarves that's all about the crafting without being a caster?

Battlesmith...you craft magic armor and weapons without being a caster. Runesmith is an armored mage.

Steam and Sorcery should have what you're looking for.

Ironsoul Forgemaster in Magic of Incarnum. Dwarf-only, but there's a way around that in Races of Stone.
