View Full Version : Submission Thread for the "From the Playground 2.0 Compendium"

I have culled out all the old dead links from the original (locked) compendium. All the magical items and creatures/templates/fauna in the old compendium have been lost due to the system change.

So we have work to do, playgrounders! If you think your homebrew is worth showing to the world at large, and has been vetted and Peachified by your fellow 'Brewers, then post your submissions to this thread, and they will be added to the new "...From the Playground 2.0 (Compendium)" (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120075).

A few items of business.

1) Please format your submissions following the scheme of the Compendium, and note what header(s) they belong under. For additional ease on my part, please
a) alphabetize your submissions.
b) include in the header if your sorcerer/wizard spell is necromancy, evocation, etc.

2) Format your submission exactly as you want it in the compendium. Do not parse your links, as I will be using the quote function to copy and paste them.

They should look like this:

Header
A Name of the Homebrew (http://www.google.com): Brief Description That's Short Enough to Stay on One Line [Your Name]
B Name of the Homebrew (http://www.google.com): Brief Description That's Short Enough to Stay on One Line [Your Name]

Do not use bold, italics, or anything else. If you do, I have to go in and remove the formatting, which makes me angry. :smalltongue:

P.S. If, for historical reasons, you want to see the old thread, complete with brief descriptions (but dead links), follow this link (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10826&highlight=compendium). For the old submission thread that I am not going to sort through, go here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10247).

Now Krimm,
As much as I respect you and your homebrews, I'd prefer if you formatted and submitted them in the manner that I requested. Otherwise, this thing will get quite out of hand with everyone saying, "Look at such and such a link", and I'll never actually finish it. :smalltongue:

I'm putting these into the categories and alphabetizing them (or putting them by spell level) within the categories. I hope that's OK (and that some of mine will make it in).

For spells, should they be listed for all classes they apply to? That's what I'm doing; please correct me if I shouldn't.

I'm beginning to see how this might have been a bad idea (TM). :smalleek: :smallwink:

Anyone have any ideas on how to make this easier? Perhaps re-making the compendium using a new user name, which multiple people could have access to? I'm open to ideas, because if things pick up, I'll spend all my time updating this thing...

This is what I talked to Afroakuma about when he tried to recreate the compendium, only to see it fail. I had written up an initial post of information on how to format the compendium, as well as a few volunteers to run the thing: the password was to be given out only on a "you're a trusted member of the community" basis, to prevent abuse or shenanigans. Still, it would require a Mod's permission (they might not allow the shared account), a few people willing to put some time into it, and so forth.

If you're interested, however, I could probably write up what I had prepared if you give me a day or so.

I'd be willing to help too, to put in a little more time organizing things when no one else was available. Of course, I haven't been around much lately, so I dunno if I'd qualify as a "trusted member of the commuity." I would really like to see this get off the ground though (and I know it's a lot of work).

The qualifications I had for "trusted" were very lax. They basically come down to the following:

A: Are your posts neatly organized enough that you can handle the mess of forum code that is the compendium?

B: Can you be relied upon to remember to sign off of/not fiddle with a shared account (if such a thing is even allowed)?

C: Can you be relied upon to not do something stupid like delete the whole thing and replace it with pictures of cats?

If you meet requirements A, B, and C, you qualify. It's just a bad idea to have 1,000 people able to alter it, so I wanted some means of (if this even works) keeping a limit.

I dunno, C is so tempting... :smalltongue: Well, B and C seem pretty easy, and I'm very organized, so A shouldn't be an issue. I guess for now we'll just wait and see if it's needed, based on how much stuff is submitted?

One question about this compendium, is why no section for homebrew martial disciplines? Or soulmelds, mysteries, invocations, vestiges, and the rest of the flying circus? :smallwink: At the very least, the above five should make an appearance, people like those. Utterances and such, well, everyone universally knows that the truenamer isn't really viable because of poor writing.

Because I, not having ToB, never think about those. I just used the categories from the old compendium.

Submit something that doesn't have a category, and I'll create a category for it.

i would bet that they would be fine with this. i know that shared accounts have been used in the pbp forums, so i would assume that if they were satisfied that the users were responsible about it, that they would be ok with it here, especially when it helps out with the compendium projects that are always pretty large and demanding.

you should have some sort of review process for oncoming editors (get a few more senior playgrounders that want to be permanent members to act as a review board so that you are not the only one having to deal with requests for the password, etc).

All is updated.

Draco, I corrected the spelling of "Artillary" to "Artillery" and for the last class used just the "Society Member" title. If there's an issue with either of those, please let me know and I will happily go and fix them. If anyone else has noticed any errors, likewise inform me.

I also added a category for NPC classes in the index in light if the recent submissions.

The spelling was something that got fixed in the actual post, but never in my extended signature I think, no problem... as for shortening the name for that one PrC, I SPECIFICALLY said that was a possible course of action, so I would have to be barking mad to object to it.

Now for some critters... I considered if the organs should be grouped together in the final list, but since they all contain links to eachother and making exceptions to filing systems is rarely a good idea, I am going to say don't do it... your choice though... (if you want me to do that, I can redo this post to de-alphabetize it into two alphabetized lists. I DO suggest keeping the sperate links to the chat threads rather than the contests threads for the contest entries. I am also going ahead and including Castor and Pollux here, since you don't have any better place to put dragons with a few character levels. For similar reasons I suggest retaining the link to the Mepholk build lay out that Keld was kind enough to do.

CREATURES

Accursed Conductor: (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4673834&postcount=13) comment HERE (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4673834#post4673834). (Incomplete still as of August 2009) [DracoDei]

Is there any room for 4e Homebrews in this new Compendium? If there is, then I would be happy to add all the stuff I've made. If this is going to be 3.5e D&D only, well then that's too bad :smallfrown:.

Errantx: I did some minor formatting changes (such as “The Master of One” to “Master of One, The”). If there are any issues, please let me know.

Draco, I'll try to get yours up tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

The compendium is solely for 3.5 material, unfortunately. Perhaps if there's enough interest in a 4.0 one, someone else could organize its collection.

Draco: I tried to update earlier today, but the internet died and my work was lost.
I am sure we can all sympathize with that.

It is up now though.
Great! (but I still wasn't in a hurry personally)

There are 4 posts set aside for creatures; hopefully that'll be plenty of space!
I would think it would be.

Thanks for your submissions.
You mean the ones that are almost entirely my own stuff (and thus me blowing my own horn)? Those submissions? Ok, so changing the order from reverse chronological to alphabetical proved a bit time consuming but... You are quite welcome, and thank you for taking on this project.

Do the Acid Classes have a place in this compendium? If so, would it be under Base Classes, or something else? Here they are so you will know what I am talking about (and can go ahead and add them if you feel like it).

The Rethgif (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62699): An attempt to titrate the forums to neutralize the hazardous concentration of Base Classes. So ground-breaking it hit a sewage main! [DracoDei]

The Draziw (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/printthread.php?t=76640): A follow up to the huge success failure of the Rethgif, this spellcaster is so depressed most of his ability scores plummet, but that is OK because everyone KNOWS the only ability full-casters need is their casting stat. The first time I mentioned "4000 Years to Live" I described it. It is the lyrics to a song that one can sing (assuming one has the voice for it) at the table to add atmosphere to dragons... because I would rather imagine that 2 tons (or more) of concentrated sagacity and potential for violence serenading his mate would when the PCs drop in unexpectedly to beg for assistance is a rather nice touch. For the actual lyrics, click the link in the second post I made on the subject, or in my extended signature my sig. For the music to the original song I modified the lyrics from, search You Tube if the link to the appropriate video is not in the thread with the lyrics.

BTW, most of the "Maneuvers" section I posted should probably go under "Disciplines", it was a difference of nomenclature since there wasn't an official category yet. Disciplines are collections of maneuvers, and very few people do individual maneuvers that are not part of an entire discipline they are creating.

Series of spells that someone pointed out to me. All of them go both on 6th level of the cleric list and the Necromancer subsection of the 6th level Sor/Wiz list. It MIGHT also belong under creatures, although it is presented very much in terms of the spells.

Beautiful Eye (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29677): Part of the "I, ball, ..." series, this spell creates an undead eyeball incapable of moving under its own power that Fascinates its victims. [Grey Knight]

Crawling Eye (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29677): Part of the "I, ball, ..." series, this spell creates an undead eyeball incapable of moving under its own power (yes, despite the name) that curses its victims' wisdom. [Grey Knight]

Horrid Eye (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29677): Part of the "I, ball, ..." series, this spell creates an undead eyeball incapable of moving under its own power that leaves its victims Sickened, frightened, and/or nauseated. [Grey Knight]

Scorching Eye (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29677): Part of the "I, ball, ..." series, this spell creates an undead eyeball incapable of moving under its own power that uses an effect similar to Inflict Critical Wounds, Mass on all that see it. [Grey Knight]

Weeping Eye (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29677): Part of the "I, ball, ..." series, this spell creates an undead eyeball incapable of moving under its own power that emulates the effects of Crushing Despair. [Grey Knight]

Base Classes (brand new):
Blademaster (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120539): a base class for users of maneuvers, specializing on a single discipline above all others. Good for using as a low-power Martial Adept or NPC class.

Base Classes (retoolings):

Ninja (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127673): a moderate retooling using the same process used for the Monk, but retrofitted.

Warmage (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131346): a heavy retooling (along with retooled spell list) that draws upon the advancements done to the class "chassis" by the Beguiler.

Martial ACFs (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121939): a set of alternate class features for the Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger and Rogue in order to replace their abilities with ToB-flavored features.

More to come later. Will use this same post for expanding options, unless it's preferred to post new stuff later.

Hey Frog,
Would you be kind enough to break up any of your links that contain multiple homebrews into multiple entries (like your Other Stuff: Teleport thingies, and Bomb and Missile Star)? And separate the spells by Class and Level? The guy that posts the compendium entries would really appreciate it!

DracoDei
2009-11-11, 04:18 PM
Meaning multiple LINKS I assume, not reposting stuff in separate threads!

Although POST based links are better than THREAD based links I think.

Barbarian MD
2009-11-11, 04:23 PM
Indeed, Draco. I edited the mistake.

As to a preference between post and thread, it doesn't matter much. Some people like to see the discussion that took place during a homebrew PEACHing.

When you have multiple homebrews in the same thread, and you want to submit them, post multiple entries, with each entry separated, even if the links go to the same place. This will help people as they browse the Compendium to find what they're looking for.

Frog Dragon
2009-11-12, 01:03 AM
Yeah. I split up the Teleporty stuff into three though that's the only offender I see. Even the feat links are strictly themed. One contains archer feats, the other duelist (the archetype!) feats.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Boards! Homebrewers of all ages!

The impossible has occurred!

...The Compendium is up to date.

Which of course means I'm about to be flooded with submissions. :smalltongue:

Seriously, I'm getting ready for my board exam, and I'm pretty much going to drop off the face of the earth come June or July. If anyone would like to help with this project, please PM me!

I will say this: it makes it MUCH easier for me (and therefore much more likely that I'll get it up in a timely manner) if you format your submissions like I've asked you to.

Submissions should take this form:

Category

A Name (www.google.com): Brief description. [Your Name]
B Name (www.google.com): Brief description. [Your Name]

Note that nothing has been bolded, italicized, or put into any colors. Note also that they're in alphabetical order.

If you're unsure, go look at the Compendium for examples.

In addition, if you're submitting a spell, submit it like this:

Sorcerer/Wizard 8 - Transmutation
Name (www.google.com): Brief Description. [Your name]

If you don't tell me what kind of spell it is, I have to go and actually open your thread and search for it, which takes time, which means I put off updating this thing longer and longer.

If it fits into multiple categories, please submit it multiple times, and if you have multiple items (like a race and a PrC) in the same thread, please submit them as two separate items with two separate categories, even if they're the same link.

Sadly, Strawberryman, I think the Compendium is rather dead at the moment, having gotten no posts in two months despite new homebrew. The problem with it is that we always lose the guy behind it.

Hmm...maybe I'll have to give it a shot one of these days. I'm around a lot...

Still here. If you want to help continue the project, PM me. We don't have to keep creating a new compendium if we treat this as a group project. I just can't keep it up by myself.

Password? What password? I think you're mistaken. Only one person has access to the account; we're just helping that person compile the information.

This isn't the thread you're looking for, moderator. Move along.

Here's the deal: since first starting work on the compendium, I've started clinical rotations. That means I work 80 hours a week. That means I come home, see my wife for about an hour and a half, and then go to bed. :smallfrown:

So, if someone else wants to work on keeping the compendium updated, send me a PM and we'll get things done. Until someone else steps forward to keep it updated, the compendium will not be updated. I might be able to take up the work again in November or December, but definitely not between now and then.

All that to say, the Compendium 2.0 is not dead. It's just on Pause until one of those two things happens. Keep posting submissions, and they'll get posted one day.
