View Full Version : Is that a staff in my pocket?

I'm in a D&D game that got rapidly accelerated (a player left and we skipped to the end of an arc) and as part of the acceleration, I got a really spiffy masterwork quarterstaff. My GM would rilly like me to magic it up, I think. I was given a pretty generous budget to work with and after buying other items I got down to about 7.5K gold to work with. I can rearrange things to go up to 10K or so.

I'm playing a wizard who started out an alchemist/hedge mage and kind of got thrust into being a "chosen one" type character. I'm Sor2/Wiz7/Fatespinner3/HombrewPrestigeClass1. I can cast up to 4th level spells and have permanent arcane sight.

What should I put into my staff? The 4000 for the +1/+1 is a given, but any suggestions as to how to make it more effective than just a minor magic beater?

Using WotC produced materials mostly.

Any advice appreciated.

You might consider putting defending on each end to let you add +2 to your AC, more with yourself or a cleric buddy casting greater magic weapon.

There's not much point for a wizard to get a quarterstaff with weapon enchantments like enhancement bonuses; you'll never be able to fight with it very well. What you're thinking of is here:

Though the cheapest one is 16,500gp.

For now you could try scrolls (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/scrolls.htm), wands (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wands.htm) and metamagic rods (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/rods.htm#metamagicRods).

If you're intent on beefing that quarterstaff instead of buying, say, a staff, then you should consider spell storing.

Most likely the only worthwhile enchantment for a caster.

Or, as mentioned, Defending.

Edit: Or, as has also already been mentioned, buy a wand or two, and perhaps a Metamagic rod. Much more useful than a staff you'll hardly ever find a useful purpose for, short of metal-capped end goes into monsters face.

Which is baaaaaaad.
