Simple, just name your favirote movie!

I'll start:

I would have to say The Shining

Hmm, tough to say.
Probably Blade Runner, followed by Braveheart and Mystery Men.

Jack Squat
2006-06-15, 05:39 PM
Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Serenity, Braveheart, Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Last Crusade.

I can't narrow it down any further

I'd have to agree with this guy, and.. hmm, so many other movies I enjoy, ack, too many to name, I liked Star Wars, I guess... gahhh, too many.

My list gets alot bigger when I divide it into catagories, I just took the first one or two I could think of from a couple catagories. I could post a full list if people don't mind me hogging the bandwidth

Which one, the Jack Nicholson one or the fairly recent adaptation? Either way, good choice, but I found the Nicholson one way more scary even though it deviated form the book a bit more and was more condensed.

Have you read the book, though?

Nerull

Hmm...I don't have a general favorite, but here goes:

Horror: Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Romance: Pretty in Pink.

Comedy: Trading Places.

Drama: Stand and Deliver.

Action: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

ElfLad
2006-06-15, 06:35 PM
Comedy: Manos: The Hands of Fate (MST3K edition)
Action: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
SciFi: The Empire Strikes Back
It's own special little category: Donnie Darko

I don't have a 'favirote', per se, but some of my 'favorites' include:

2001: A Space Oddessy
Apocalypse Now
Aliens
Perfect Blue
True Romance

Those are probably the best as far as the more serious films are concerned. I've got a healthy collection of comedies, which I'm a big fan of as well, noteably such classics as Office Space, Anchorman, The Big Lebowski, etc.

To be honest though, I watch an awful lot of films so if I was asked this question again in a few months' time I'm sure the answer would be a bit different. That's not to say that my love for individual films is transient and constantly changing. Its just that with so many good films out there its nigh-on impossible to pin down a definite list of the best.

Because I happen to have some spare time on my hands, I've decided to post a complete list, in no particular order (This list may be enough to start a video store :P)

Action
Serentiy
Stargate
Outlander
The Abyss
Army of Darkness
John Carpenter's Vampires
John Carpetner's Vampires: Los Muertos
Starship Troopers
Airplane!

2000: A Space Travesty
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

All the Bond movies, except Spy who Loved Me (Names refrained because I can't remember all of them)
Lethal Weapon (I-IV)
Bladerunner
Air Force One
Patriot Games
Clear and Present Danger
U-571
Top Gun
The Mask of Zoro
The Legend of Zoro
The 13th Warrior
First Knight
Mortal Kombat

Comedy
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
Robin Hood: Men In Tights
History of the World: Part 1
Spaceballs

The Waterboy
Beeltejuice
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Mars Attacks
Gung Ho
Encino Man
Son-In-Law
MST3K series

Drama
A Few Good Men
The Da Vinci Code

NOTE: I only have three catagories, because technically there are only 5: Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror, and Romace, and I'm not too fond of the latter 2. Every other "catagory" is a sub catagory, and these five are often in every movie, but the movie is normally decidedly one.

I know that I'm missing plenty of movies in other peoples collections, but I'm only 17, cut me a break :)

EDIT: Forgot some :-[

EDIT2: Aparrantly I can't remember the past 2 months of my life(put 16 instead of 17). Maybe I need to get my head checked :-/

WTF?! is that the film where americans try to re-write history for 2 hours and at the end there is a 20 second blip saying that England really broke enigma?
How does that rank anywhere near a Best movie lineup? >:(

Pulp Fiction.
Aliens.
Lock Stock & 2 smoking barrels
The Italian Job (the original)
Die Hard Triliogy
the Orignal Star Wars Triliogy (don't even get me started on the new films)

D'oh I forgot most of those (put down Da Vinci, and haven't seen Lock Stock or the original Italian Job)

I have to agree that in almost every case (I'm looking at you "The Great Escape") the book is better than the movie, actually most book-to-movie films aren't even worth mentioning, case in point is "All Quiet on the Western Front". Extrememly moving book, but the movie was crap.

I also forgot to add in The Blues Brothers and Revenge of the Nerds (original) into the list, both are under comedy. I'll be sure to add them in next time one of these posts come up

The Boondock Saints, Patton, Gettysburg, and Star Wars, in that order.

Special mention: Band of Brothers. Miniseries, but wow, what a miniseries.

I didn't like Gettysburg personally, I thought it was too long between action scenes

Ted_Stryker
2006-06-15, 10:34 PM
If I had to pick one, I'd have to go with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I don't know if it qualifies as great cinema, but it's a lot of fun.

I would have to say Boondock Saints at the moment.

Trog
2006-06-15, 11:37 PM
Action: LOTR trilogy... but if I have to break it down The Return of the King.

Drama/Romance: Casablanca

Horror: The People Under The Stairs

Comedy: The Big Lebowski

Standup Comey: anything by Eddie Izzard

Western: Unforgiven

LooseCannon

Jacksquat3, Gettysburg was enjoyable to me because I quite thoroughly love watching Jeff Daniels act, and because I read The Killer Angels the night before I first watched it. Also, the speeches were powerful. Overdramaticization of the fact, but still powerful.

Ted_Stryker, I loved Wrath of Khan, but I think The Undiscovered Country is my favourite. Really, any even numbered Trek movie.

Mr._Blinky
2006-06-16, 10:51 AM
I will be the first to say that Gods and Generals was a terrible movie. Yes, yes it was indeed. Gettysburg was far superior.

P.S. Its favorite, by the way, not favirote. ;) Don't worry, I can understand if you're not a native speaker, I'm just a bit of a spelling freak. :)

LooseCannon: So long as we stay away from The Final Frontier. You know, the one where they go searching for God. That was a horrible movie. *shudder*

I would have to say The Shining

I saw the Simpsons Halloween version of The Shining before I saw the actual movie itself. When I saw the real one, I just couldn't take it seriously:

*elevator doors open, gushing waves of blood*
Me (hearing Mr. Burns in my head): "That's odd. The blood usually gets off at the second floor..." ;)

Jack Squat

I don't watch movies.. so I like very few.

Catch me if you can
LotR
Oceans 12 (I don't think I watched 11)

Yeahh.. I think thats about it. I do plan on seeing V for Vendetta, Silent Hill and The Omen (which is weird 'cause of all the movies I'd want to watch horror isn't usually one of them)

I had a chance to see The Village but the computer was more tempting than a movie.

Of course, "it's" is grammatical, not spelling. ;)

And yes, I know the "e" in touche is supposed to have a mark over it, but I haven't the slightest idea of how to put one in there.

YaBB is the forum software that stands for "Yet another Bulletin Board". 1G stands for "1 Gold", which is simply the name of the release, I believe. SP generally stands for Service Pack, but I could be wrong in this case.

Casablanca.

Why does Army of Darkness get put in the Horror section of the video store, while Abbot & Costello's monster movies get filed as Comedy? ???

Scariest horror movie I can watch without getting nightmares: The Legend of Hell House.

Dr Strangelove; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!

The Longest Day. Tora! Tora! Tora!

Kelly's Heroes. [especially the final confrontation]

Zelig. [the only Woody Allen movie I can watch in a single sitting]

Gandhi.

Beauty and the Beast [Jean Cocteau's version].

And my favorite James Bond movie: Casino Royale.

Hmm... depending on whether the month has 30 days in it or not, it's usually The Princess Bride. Now, I've got a short list that contends with it from time to time:

Excalibur
Camelot
Sleeping Beauty (the Disney)
Lord of the Rings (as a whole)
Young Frankenstein

The main draw, for me, with The Princess Bride is the incredible characters that you can care about immedietely. The one-liners are great, but it's the characters that really drive the film.

• Shinchinin no Samurai "The Seven Samurai"
• Shawshank Redemption
• Who Framed Roger Rabbit - Also personal, contains a bit of own personal philosphy... as in never lose your sense of humor, sometimes it really is the only thing ya got in life
• Pulp Fiction
• Life of Brain
• Dr. Strangelove or how I Learned to stop worrying and love the bomb
• Fight Club
• The Pianist
• Kaze no tani no Naushika "Nausicaa and the Valley of the Winds"

• Duck Soup
• Wo hu cang long "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
• Hotaru no haka "Grave of Fireflies"
• Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels
• Akai hasji no ****a no nurui mizu "Warm water under red bridge." - "Think, and continue thinking... and eventually the answer will become clear."

Gee I hope I'm posting this right and it ends up on the thread...Newbie here....um...
I've seen the Gregory Peck version of "The Omen" four times in a row...I literally sat there and watched it four times consecutively. "O Brother Where Art Thou?" more times than I can count, and if I could only watch one movie for the rest of my life, it would be "The Third Man" because Orson Wells is a cinema god and everything about that movie is perfect. It blows "The Maltese Falcon" away.

The Princess Bride is the best movie of all time

The Princess Bride

the Princess Bride

The Princess Bride. All the way. Others are really nice, and all, but this one has everything.

The main draw, for me, with The Princess Bride is the incredible characters that you can care about immedietely. The one-liners are great, but it's the characters that really drive the film.

The Princess Bride

Princess Bride

The Princess Bride

There are many, many movies I enjoy, but my favorite of all-time is The Princess Bride.

The Princess Bride.

The Princess Bride! May not be the "best" movie, in any technical or artistic sense, but it gives me warm fuzzies like no other.
Well said, all. ;D

There has never been a movie that I could say to: "I hated it!" but of course, The Princess Bride is one of my absolute favorites.

Conan the Barbarian - it's simply a cut above the rest when it comes to fantasy - the music score, the imagery, the scope...oh yeah and the pushy thing of barbarian making :P (shame about the sequel which is "just another fantasy film")

Ok, I gotta add to my favorites. I went to the library and checked out the 1st Harry Potter movie... didn't know a thing about the books or films till I got it yet lo and behold I became addicted. I've now gone and gotten all the rest. Now I'm annoyed to wait till May for the next... though if my sister is still working at the theatre I'll get to see it a few days early ;D

And as I've never even seen the books I gotta ask... in the films about the only special thing with magic Larry Garde... err, Harry Potter has done was with that spell to ward off evil in Prisoners. In the books does he actually ever do 'anything'?

Then there is X-Men III... I seem to be the only one who loved it (besides my Dad). Even my sisters who are big, big fans of the first two just kinda sneered at it.

Personally I found the whole thing fascinating and well done.

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
LotR
Princess Bride
Underworld 1 & 2
Willow
Covenant (this one just game out, but it is awesome)
Floating (Independent movie, no one has probably ever seen it, but it was...interesting.)

I would like to add Black Hawk Down to my list. I reckon its gotta be one of the best war movies I've seen. Everything about it works really well, from the direction, through sound and music, action, etc. The only possible gripes I can have with it is that its got Josh Hartnett and Orlando Bloom in it (though thankfully the latter doesn't last long).

Oh and Moulin Rouge by a nose.

'Tis so. :P I saw the sequal first though. And I like them both just for the music. And the car chases.

And I will agree with Moulin Rouge.

that has to be the most annoying question on the entire planet .. i have about a top fifteen

Yup, annoying indeed, but I still have a favorite (at least for now) and that's kung-fusion. I don't know what it is, but it makes me laugh to tears... he he.

One more is the fifth element, but just Plavalaguna´s concert...

Talking about laughs, Zoolander is just hilarious (silly but hilarious)
