I was reading about Washington National Cathedral, offically the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul and I came across this picture. It is a picture of one of the gargoyles on the cathedral.

:smalleek:

When was that carved? Is it possible that this was the inspiration for the face of Darth Vader? Or maybe that it's just photoshopped? My first assumption is that it's just an unlikely coincidence, but still. Wow.

I thought the same thing. But it's right here (http://www.nationalcathedral.org/about/darthVader.shtml), with an explanation.

Anyways, I must say that's quite a fantastic thing, Vader on the Washington National Cathedral. I'm surprised they let that happen.

How could they not let it happen? Frankly, the Sith are an underrepresented minority and this kind of spotlight was long overdue.

Also, I want one. And a full-size darth vader replica robot.

Future generations archeologists surely have to think about this...

Maybe they think George Lucas was a prophet that brings our holy bible "Star wars movie 1-6"

Maybe they think George Lucas was a prophet that brings our holy bible "Star wars movie 1-6"

There is evidence in the Dead Sea Scrolls that proves that Episodes 1-3 are in fact false and should be stricken from the gospel of St. (George) Lucas. The fact that this has been covered up is obviously a Sith ploy for more airtime.

My wife worked at the National Cathedral up until last year, and the picture is legit. Good ol' Darth is one of the big draws. He's actually a "grotesque," rather than a gargoyle, since he doesn't have a spout on him. Reference to it here (http://www.nationalcathedral.org/about/darthVader.shtml) and here (beware PDF) (http://www.nationalcathedral.org/pdfs/darth.pdf).

He's there because a kid won a contest.

In the 1980s the Cathedral, with National Geographic World magazine, sponsored a competition for children to design decorative sculpture for the Cathedral. The third-place winner was Christopher Rader of Kearney, Nebraska who submitted a drawing of this futuristic representation of evil. Darth Vader was placed on the northwest tower with the other winning designs: a raccoon, a girl with pigtails and braces and a man with large teeth and an umbrella.

A few other interesting things about the Cathedral: it's the final resting place of President Woodrow Wilson; one of the stained glass windows contains a moon rock; and the cathedral cat, Katherine of Tarragon, pretty much has the run of the place.

Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your gargoyle.
He told me enough! He told me you destroyed it!
No. I am your gargoyle.

But seriously, the head of an iconic representation of evil on a cathedral? Were they going for the redemption angle, or won't it be long before we see the heads of Sauron, the Lich King, Xykon, Apophis, the Joker, and other such characters adorning our holy sites?
