View Full Version : Horngeek's Maiden Banner

Serpentine
2009-08-01, 08:21 AM
Heya folks. I've been assigned banner-making duties. So...

MAIDENS... FALL IN!
Who wants in/gives permission for avatars they've made to be included?

MAIDENS... PRESENT ARMS!
Please post here the avatar you want included, preferably extra-large (for Photoshop purposes) or better yet, if the creator avatarists could make a bound version of the ones people want in, that would be ridiculously useful. Like the '60s Batman Riddler with a Swiss army knife.

HATTENNN...SHUN!
I will not be remaking avatars from scratch. If I don't have a pre-bound version, I'll have to get creative in Photoshop (and it won't look as good).

At ease, Maidens.

I'm just popping in to post a notice: as it stands, the request is for these 9 to be the maidens:

Em Blackleaf
DD
EleventhHour, her Roman Avatar.
SMEE, current avvie.
Mauve Shirt.
Francinethefighter (GB'd Fredthefighter)
CurlyKitGirl
Je dit Viola
Recaiden

Now, if enough people volunteer moar, I might see about getting a larger image, but the current one is for just nine. This isn't a "these are better" it's just what fits.

Thanks for the new ones, though! Even if they don't end up being used.

So not writing the little comment to say who made the avatar is worth that much in saving terms? Well, I like to know who makes them anyway. I'm not sure that he made that one, but I can't remember if he makes his own.
I don't see it as boasting anyway, it's just informative.

Heh. It's what comes when you start a meme on SMBG.

It's meant to be a parody of the classic "maiden sacrificed to Dragon, and Knight comes to save her".

In this case, the Dragon doesn't eat maidens.

I don't see it as boasting anyway, it's just informative.I don't advertise that I make my own avatars, and I think most others don't, either. I think it's generally assumed that if you don't have a creator named in your sig then you did it yourself, and if you didn't and you don't then that's just rude.

Hokay, so. Readymade maidens so far:
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm316/RockShade/AksalaBound.png http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/6146/maidengb.gif

Maidens I need to figure out how to bind and look distressed, or better yet the creators could fix up:
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/2931/dallosdakkotagbwiiiqp7.gif http://www.smeenet.org/avatar/jrabbit.gif http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/h0wupdohighknee/Avatars/mauveshirt.png http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa279/oliver426/g17290.png http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv173/Tsofu/Legionnaireredcapeblue.png http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/EmilyBlackleaf/Avatars/EmLittleGirl.png

Horngeek: Ah... it seems I've deleted those messages you sent me  Honestly I'd prefer that people post their preferred avatars here, but if you wanna send it again (or just post 'em here)... Also, do you want me to change the dragons eyes to triangles, or are you happy with ovals?

Illustrator and Photoshop. If anyone has a better way of getting rid of the white bits, please let me know...

Also, thanks to those who made me a bound version

Try this;

Place all the avatars on one layer (we'll call this the "avatar layer"), the background on another (just use the background layer) and put a third layer in between them (call this the "middle layer" for simplicities sake).
Copy all of the avatars and paste them on the middle layer (lock and hide the other two for the moment).
Merge the contents of the middle layer into one and change the colour of the bitmap (there should be a colour fill tool somewhere) to white.
Set the avatar layer to "multiply" on the layer properties menu. The middle layer will essentially act as a white background so the avatar layer appears unchanged.
With all layers visible, lock the background and avatar layers (you'll be working on the middle layer).
Get the eraser tool out and simply start erasing the white bits. This will be a bit tedious but the fact that the avatars above are being multiplied (no, I'm not sure what it means apart from "makes things merge into the layers behind") means presentation of the avatars won't be ruined.

Serpentine
2009-08-07, 06:44 AM
Is that in Photoshop or Illustrator? Cuz I'm pretty sure Illustrator doesn't have anything like the same sort of eraser.

What is it that "multiply" does? And is it possible to do the necessary stuff on one figure, and then copy it back into Illustrator? I mostly just use Photoshop for touch-ups and (before I realised you can do it in Illustrator) effects.

You could create the white outlines that make up the middle layer seperately, but you'd have to use the multiply function in the program it's used in.

As for what the multiply function actually does, I found this tutorial here; http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/tutorials/index.cfm?featureid=1594

A central element of this tutorial is the use of the Multiply function in Photoshop. Part of the darken family of blending modes, at its most basic it compares the blend layer’s pixels with the base layer on a channel-by-channel basis, but rather than simply choosing the darker of the two, it multiplies the base colour by the blend colour.

A multiple of black will always be black, and anything multiplied by white is unchanged. Otherwise, the net result is always a darker underlying image.

Multiply can seem odd at first glance. The concept of mixing paints – red and blue, for example – is simple to grasp. Multiplying is similar to the leap between addition and multiplication in mathematics.
