We all have one. A quote we absolutely love, but can't think of what it's from. Mine is:

"Strong like bull. Smart like tractor."

Does anyone know what it's from?

Maybe you have a beloved quote but don't know where it's from?

"But what does it do?"
"It doesn't do anything, that's the beauty of it!"

We've been debating and searching this one at another forum I frequent for YEARS.

How about this?

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Sorry, got no idea on the others.

I'm curious as to where "I am made of awesome!" came from.

"You Gotta Be So Good, They Can't Ignore You."

I think its in one of the Ender books, but I can't place it.

Tiberian, I don't have them handy but that very well could be from the Shadow series from Card (Ender's Shadow most likely). But yes, read Ender's Game first! I'm a long time member of OSC's message board, been a fan for a looooong time.

Thanks for the avatar comment, I made that one for the current contest. :)

I could swear it's from a Magic card. Null Rod, maybe?

Almost. Null Rod's flavour text is:

Gerrard: "But it doesn't do anything!"
Hanna: "No—it does nothing.".

So close, but no cigar.

I have no idea where this is from, but I would like to know.

"Oh, he's on the List."
"You do realise that's not notepaper? That's a piece of bark."
"You're on the list too, smartass."

I think it's either from the old superman or incredible hulk movies, but I'm not sure...

Seems like hte Hulk would be the better candidate between the two.

Yep, it is. His little assistant guy or whatever says it to the bouncer with the silly psychic card thingies. Good film, I thought.

I don't have any myself, but not long ago I was trying to remember where the "What we do in life echoes in eternity" line was from. It was during a pub quiz and just before the end of the round I finally remembered it and promptly blurted it out to the entire room. :P

Not a quote, per se, but it's been bugging me for some time and I don't want to reread the book to find it out, but who is Aramis's valet in The Three Musketeers. I know D'Artagnan has Planchet, Porthos has Mosqueton, and Athos Grimaud, but Aramis's eludes me. I'm fairly certain it starts with a B.

We were thinking Frieza Saga, when Frieza gets the Namek DBs. But that's unlikely, because ~1 year is not "long".

-Meh. Who knows.

One of my favorite quotes has always been

"Thats not happiness to see me, is it..."

I cant remember for the life of me where that came from though.

From Chapter 7 of The Three Musketeers (http://www.worldwideschool.org/library/books/lit/adventure/TheThreeMusketeers/chap8.html), in which all of the lackeys are introduced in turn, Aramis' valet is named Bazin. That was such a good story, and I really should get around to reading The Man in the Iron Mask at some point.

Ok, here's the quote that no one I know can come up with where it was saidfirst.(including myself)

"Who's your daddy?" :)

Not the most literary of quotes, but I'm still curious...

Lucky
2006-08-17, 10:48 PM
Well, for "Who's your daddy," it's hard to tell, but I was told that the most likely point of origin is in the song Time of the Season by The Zombies in 1968. Not a movie, but I would hazard a guess at that one.

I think thats from Final Fantasy: Advent Children. I don't remember the name of the guy, but I think it was the one of the three brothers - the one that turns into sephiroth. I could be wrong though.

I've seen that on bumper stickers in pagan catalogs before, but I don't know where they got it from.

Yep, I recognize the quote. I'm pretty sure Ender says it to Bean when Bean asks why he's being picked on.

From the mid-nineties TV show The Critic: "I have no one to envy. I envy you for having me to envy."

And "Power OVERWHELMING!!"

-The "Meddle in the Affairs", I'm almost certain, is Guards Guards by Terry Pratchett.

I could have sworn that the "Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons...." was just a funnier version of "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger" which I think came from Tolkein.

And the dragons one coming from Terry Pratchett makes perfect sense. But it's not listed in the quote file (http://www.lspace.org/books/pqf/guards-guards.html). I'm assuming it'd be funny enough to end up there.

The "dragons" one is just a play on the Tolkien line. And its one that crops up everywhere (mainly on bumper stickers etc. now apparently) that I'm fairly sure that finding out where it originally came from wouldn't be worth effort, and doubtless there are dozens that would claim its their's. :P It does seem to fit Pratchett's style, but given that its such a simple take on the original line its not exactly hard to see how someone else could've come up with it.
